Do the characters come on the beach at all when at their own island?

Yes some of the character leave the ship on Castaway Cay. My favorite picture from the cruise was of Matthew in the Kids Club when Mickey visited. In addition to visiting the kids club, I have seen the characters up and down the walkway from the ship to the beach. Once Goofy did a conga line around the Cookie's BBQ area.

They have scheduled photo ops with characters at Mount Rustmore (a collection of old, rusty buoys with Disney characters faces painted on them to look a little bit like Mount Rushmore). It's a great photo op with the ship in the background.
