Chapter book recommendations?

We, too, enjoy the Junie B. Jones series.

While I'll admit I haven't read any -- my girls both really enjoy the A to Z mysteries by Ron Roy.

Magic Tree House is very popular. My DDs also have read of few Geronimo Stilton books.

I second My Father's Dragon and its sequels, along with Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little. The Trumpet of the Swan wasn't as great, if I recall correctly.

The Little House on the Prairie books would be wonderful if your girls enjoy them. Try Little House in the Big Woods and see what they think.

There's a great resource called The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease that lists hundreds of choices. See if you can get a copy at your library.

Julie Edwards (yes, Mary Poppins and Sound of Music) wrote a couple of great children's books - Mandy and the Last of the Really Great Whang Doodles. Roald Dahl was always a favorite at my house, but he's a little snarky so you might have to see if your daughters are ready for his humor (we are a pretty sarcastic family, so mine loved it, of course!!)

Old-fashioned favorites would be Heidi, The Saturdays and others by Elizabeth Enright, A Litle Princess and The Secret Garden. There's a great new book I bought DD for Christmas called The Penderwicks - about a family who goes away on holiday and has adventures on the grounds of a great estate. It's new but has a cozy old-fashioned feel - I think the mom has died and the dad is kind of a bumbling professor.

There are so many great choices!!!!

I bought the Jim Trelease book about 15 years ago and it has wonderful recommendations. We have many rubbermaid containers full of books that I have read aloud or the kids to themselves when they got older. I think reading aloud to your children is one of the best things you can do together.

Here are some of our favourites for girls around your girls' ages:
Pippi Longstocking
Abel's Island
Poppy
The Nose from Jupiter
Mr. Popper's Penguins
The Littles
The Enormous Egg
Cricket in Times Square

I just finished reading The Mouse and the Motorcycle to DS6--he loved it.

The Indian in the Cupboard, and The Castle in the Attic are good, too.

Mine loved Magic treehouse, Junie B., and Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing at that age. Also loved Charlotte's Web. DD likes Franny K. Stein, The trouble with Tink and Disney Fairy series. Katie Kazoo and Judy Moody might be a little old for them, just MHO.

Personally, my mom read Little House on the Prarie to us at that age, and we loved it. I remember the Cricket in Times Square and Charlotte's web as others we loved.

Sorry, it was quite a while ago, and my memory is going..... :)

I agree with reading aloud to all children, even when they can read to themselves. My DS8 and Ds6 are fantastic, above average readers. I still read aloud to them before bed and then they read to themselves. I agree with many of the choices here, and I am adding one: The Tale of Despereaux. I am currently reading this to the kids. It is enchanting and it has very short chapters which is conducive to reading aloud...

I also love the Beverly Cleary books.

DD#1 gets the scholastic book club order forms from her preschool every week so here are some listed:

Cam Jansen
Horrible Harry
Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle
Junie B. Jones (our niece LOVES these)
Magic Tree House
there are sleuth ones too, I just can't remember the name

we haven't bought any but the Junie b. jones ones for our niece since DD is only 3.5, but I have heard good things about all the others.

Good luck:)

The Lemony Snicket series might be good too. They might be a little old/scary for your children. They're quick reads, so check one out of the library and pre-read it to decide.

My kids LOVED the Magic Treehouse Series!

Inkheart by Cornelia Funke is also a very interesting fantasy book.

All the Ralph Mouse series by Beverly Cleary were fun (Ralph S. Mouse, the Mouse and the Motorcycle, etc.) I remember liking the Ramona series by her, but my kids didn't get into them.

My DD really enjoyed the poems by Shel Silverstein. There are several books of collections, and she had them all. Those are books we still have and she's almost 15. It makes a nice alternative to chapter books for those times that the kids aren't ready for bed at the same time, or when you're between books.

I printed out all these suggestions to take to the library with me. Keep the ideas coming!!

Thanks!

Judy Blume's Superfudge was one of my favorite books when I was little.

I like a lot of the ones that have been mentioned, but I don't think I've seen "The Wizard of Oz" mentioned yet. Nice sized chapters for reading aloud and my copy (from the 1970's) had wonderful illustrations.

I read Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh out loud every year to my 3rd graders and they LOVE it!

Your children are beautiful, tiff211! Some of the favorites in our house were the 'Little House' series, 'Anne of Green Gables', and the 'Hobbit'. Dickens 'A Christmas Carol' is a great one for Christmas. Reading aloud is one of our favorite memories, and I know our kids feel the same. Enjoy those books! :)

Oh, yes, poetry would be great, too. In addition to Shel Silverstein, Jack Prelutsky is a great, great poet.

Because of Winn Dixie-such a "pure" book.

My kids loved Junie B Jones, The Bailey School Kids, Magic Treehouse. DD also loved the American Girl books

Ramonia quibey series. Its a longer seires but its a good one. They are about a girl named ramonia and her sister beezus. There actully funny and teach a lesson.
I would start with Beezus and Ramona. There written by Beverly Cleary.
The best part is the seies progresses as ramona grows
Beezus and Ramona (4 years old)
Ramona the Pest (kindergarten) (my personal fav.)
Ramona the Brave (1st grade)
Ramona and Her Father (2nd grade)
Ramona and Her Mother (2nd grade)

Ramona Forever (3rd grade)
Ramona's World (4th grade)
