Chankanaab or Xcaret in Cozumel?

We will be going on the Fantasy in October and trying to figure out what to do in Cozumel. It will be me, DH, DS6, DS8, and 2 grandparents. I have looked at both Chankanaab and Xcaret and can't figure out which would be best. Anyone done either of these? We would like to do a dolphin encounter, just the hug/kiss one. I like the look of the swimming in the cave in Xcaret, but really worried about the reviews of seasickness from the ferry ride there. Can anyone give me any advice on what would be better?

Personally, Xcaret is better but in my opinion it makes for a long day going from Cozumel and not much time to appreciate what it has to offer. The underground rivers are fun. I personally am not a fan of dolphin encounters so I can't address that. We stay in the resort next to it so have been several times. We also stay in a resort in Cozumel. You can definitely get sick on the ferry ride. Just depends on the weather. My suggestion is to take meclizine before going. Chankanaab would be a bit more relaxing for you if that makes a difference. PS: I wouldn't do Xcaret on my own for fear of not getting back to the ship on time.

If you like the sound of a Dolphin experience AND cave swimming, why not consider the XelHa excursion? I went when I was on the Fantasy in 2014 and it was spectacular. There's something for any age and any ability, with food and drink included. I CANNOT recommend it highly enough!

Hands down Xcaret... it is beautiful paradise in that place! I still have my picture of pineapple drinks with faces on them made out of fruit. We went with my parents and four kids: 18, 16, 14 and 8. The younger three were boys and didn't want to leave by the end of the day. I hope to go back one day soon! Great, great memories. We also did the under the sea walk. I panicked when I first went in but then thought to myself, "if this is the way to go out of this world, what a better way..." The fish loved nipping at my mom's legs! I can't say enough from this wonderful trip!

I can't speak for either excursion, but I had a problem with the ferry on the way over and really dreaded the ride back. Fortunately, the ferry back had outdoor seating on the top deck and the ride back was very enjoyable. I'm not sure if there was outside seating on the ride over.

Given the numbers and ages in your party, and the infamous ferry with an unpredictable sea state, to and fro, I would choose Chankanaab. We had a wonderful experience there in late October.

No real sandy beach with gradual entry to water though, (except a small one in a tiny lagoon) but, a big wide sandy beach above the retaining wall, and several sets of stairs into the water, with good snorkeling, right next to shore, against the rocks/retaining wall.
That's always a huge plus. No reason to swim way out. The fish are apparently used to folks, and they come right up to you. Amazing so close to shore. :)

Also the ferry transfer to the mainland will eat up precious time. Minimum 1 hour each way. :crazy2:

If you want to do Xcaret, Tulum, etc. on the mainland, book a flight to CUN, and stay for 5 -10 days, JMHO.

Here is a great review w/pics. Notice the links to swim review, etc.
