First of all let me say I, DW, 33, am a plan-a-holic. I go right from one vacation straight on to the next. DH(34) and I went to DW with our DN and family back when it was just the two of us...in July, when the Olympics were in Atlanta. Yeah, you can imagine. People everywhere, and HOT! But, I've always wanted my kids to experience it, it's like a rite of passage of childhood, one that I never personally got to experience. So I've been planning a trip to DW since my DS was, well, born. Then, when DD came along, I knew we were going to have to wait until she got big enough to "remember the magic". I've ordered about 3 planning videos since DS was born. So DS is now 9, DD is now 5, and I thought it would be the absolute PERFECT time to take them to DW. Perfect ages, they'll be able to remember the trip well, etc. I even went so far as to get the Disney Visa Rewards card (highly recommended!) last year in anticipation of our trip. I'm also a bargain hunter, so if there is any way that I can save money on average retail, I'm gonna. So, with my most recent planning video, I've got this trip all planned out--made the difficult decision of where we would stay, duration of trip, etc. The cost was doable, so in January of 2008 I presented all my years of planning to DH for final approval. (Yeah, girls, I can hear ya, but I'm a stay-at-home mom who gets what she wants 99% of the time!!) Now, mind you, DH had nodded his head or shrugged a few times as I discussed, well more like told, him of the plans along the way. But now that it was down to the final "all I have to do is press the button to 'book it'!" stage, he threw me for a loop. He said he really just didn't want to go. That he thought that the kids really didn't even know who Mickey Mouse was (!!!) and that it was mainly me that wanted to do DW (!!!!!) and that the kids would be just as happy at any theme park. Ouch. All those years of planning and dreaming where melting like yesterday's popcicle.
We've done two cruises in the past. One in 2002 on the Carnival Fascination for a 3 night when DS was 3. We weren't crazy about the ship, and this being our very first cruise, I was really taken aback by the constant scheduling of everything, I wanted to do what I wanted, when I wanted! Be at deck 10 for ice carving at 4:00, be at the promenade lounge at 3:30 for line dancing, etc. etc. etc. The list and scheduling was endless! But we vowed to cruise again, maybe with a different company. We cruised again on Carnival, this time on the Imagination in 2006 when DS was 7 and DD was 3. This one was better as we had friends with kids along with us and we just generally had a much better time, we even had a balcony suite. We wanted to stay another 4 days, and knew that we would be cruising again sometime in the future. I had looked into Disney cruises both times when deciding on those past cruises, but dismissed them quickly as the cost was nearly double.
So now with Disney World shot down, and almost $500 worth of Disney Reward Dollars at stake, hubby said he'd really like to cruise again. That's when the idea of our Disney Cruise was conceived. I quickly recovered, shifted gears, and got my research underway. I discovered that for roughly the same cost of our 5 day DW vaca, we could take a 3 night Disney cruise. Sorry, no suite this time, but I was assured by DISers that a balcony stateroom on DCL is quite roomy. I was familiar with a couple of DW planning sights, and just a few clicks away on those same sights was lots of cruise information. We had to go in July, this was a certainty (DH farms and this is his only off time of the year) and there aren't many 3 night itineraries to choose from, so picking the right cruise was pretty easy. Now that it was within my grasp, I did a little checking with TAs online for pricing and OBCs. I chose a TA that offered cash back. I presented all this to DH, and he said, "book it"!
I immediately e-mailed the TA that had the best deal, and set the trip in stone. This was January 15, 2008. I used the Disney Reward Visa to book it, and got free interest for 6 months. We already had all the $$ saved to take the trip with, but hey, I'd rather keep the money in my bank account as long as I can!
Now, this is where the inexperienced cruiser/planner might think that their job is done. Cruise is booked, so what else is there to do, right?? Ha ha, novices!! I was a member of another cruise message board from our previous cruises, and by way of that board was directed here, to the DIS. This is where I have lived for the past 6 months. If for no other reason than to just "be close" to my cruise. To know that it is going to happen. To read others experiences with it. And just because I'm so darn excited!!
So I decided that I would wait a little while to book the flights, keeping my eye on them and striking when the iron was hot. We live in a great area where St. Louis, Memphis, and Nashville are all about the same distance away, so I had lots of options. After a week or so, I was afraid with the rising fuel costs, they weren't gonna get much better than $158 pp. So 15 days later, I had our flights booked. So much for waiting.
The only non-stop flight came in to Orlando too late for us to make it to the ship all in the same day, so we planned on arriving a day early. Hubby is more excited about seeing Kennedy Space Center than anything, so we have to stay an extra day. Darn.
Which leads to more reseach, on where to stay in Cape Canaveral.
So after reading reviews here and on other travel websites, I decided to try out two different ones. We'll be staying at the Four Points Sheridan Cocoa Beach upon arrival. We won't spend much time there, basically just to sleep and get breakfast the next morning, but it really sounded neat and I wanted to try it out. After the cruise we'll try the Radisson Resort at the port, mainly because I've heard great things about the pool and I am expecting to get some down time after Kennedy. We'll be looking for some breakfast there or abouts as well, before we head back to Orlando for our afternoon flight. That part makes me sad. Actually, it makes me sad too that I know this trip is not going to be long enough, and after 6 months of anticipation, it'll be over in 5 days!!
Next thing to plan: transportation. As stated before, I love to save $$, so it was much cheaper for us as a family of 4 to rent a car than to take Disney transportation. Ergo: more research. Which rental car company was best/most convenient, and had the best rates!! I finally settled on Budget for recommendations on another Disney related website and for the price. I've got two one-way rentals: one from Orlando to Cape Canaveral, and the other one vice-versa. I didn't want to have to pay the daily rate when we weren't using the car. It might be a bit of a hassle to have to go back and rent again when we get off the ship, but for $150+, I'd call it worth the hassle. That'll more than pay for my Cabana Massage on CC!!
Alright, so now what?? I've got the cruise, where we'll stay, how we'll get there, everything all decided. Well, gorsh, there's still lots!! That's where this DIS board has really come in handy. Loyal DISers that post pictures, TRs, and Personal Navigators have helped me narrow down what is a must and a must not.
On embarkation day, we're gonna get at the port as soon as it opens. DH will drop us off then go to return the rental car as I check us all in. I'll sign the kids in for the clubs, then just hang-out and anticipate the fun ahead! Once onboard we plan to grab lunch and head for the pool. We've booked the Discover Atlantis tour at Nassau (kids have NEVER seen a large indoor aquarium), and plan on just doing our own thing on CC day, maybe even a bike ride and my cabana massage is my one splurge of the trip! (Well, that and the Mickey Mouse Ice Cream Bars!) I've got all of us (except DH) special outfits for Pirate Night, and other special matching outfits for photo ops. Have I forgotten anything?
So, in about 20 more days it'll all be over with, and I'll be back with a full TR, and hopefully lots of pictures. I'll let you know what went wrong, what went right, and if I over planned it all.
