I'm not saying that it isn't disappointing and my huband completely disagrees with me about the fairness of it, but I still don't seen how there would be any way to confirm anything about how you ended up in a particular room. There are a finite number of units available - when you add particular requests to that limited number of units the number becomes even smaller.

I can only imagine how horrible it would be to truly need a non smoking unit and have to take a smoking unit, but who is to say that the other non smoking units were legitimately filled with guests who checked in days before with the same request and those units were open at that time. I have to think that the job of room assigning would be a horrific one. There are a limited number of units/rooms/views etc.. available - and most often everyone wants the same one.

While I believe that the new policy is trying to help what was a bad situation I can only think that now everyone is going to feel its a conspiracy! And still no way to actually know why you didn't get a particular request.

How about when the CM says "you were preassigned to XXX room but we gave it to someone else earlier so now you're in YYY room". Now if they're having problems with finding a room (I can usually tell), I ask them straight out and they're usually pretty honest. I don't believe there's a new policy, only that things are slow enough that they feel things can be taken care of without much extra upfront work. I'm sure they'll go back to just the old way once they need to. I'm also sure they are preassigning the ones with major or specific requests. What I've been pointing out is simply that the old way wasn't so fair either. Some overworked, underpaid person had all these rooms to preassign and they wanted to get done so they could get on with their other duties. They will try to get it right but are not going to put a major amount of work into it beyond that initial effort. Then the CM at the OKW checkin gets people that doesn't like the view or the road noise or the folliage and they have to change them so they take your room. Then the room the first group was unhappy with goes to the one they took the new room from. The waterfall effect continues.

I'm sure there are those out there that will say they shouldn't change any of them, just let everyone keep the preassigned rooms. OK but someone had a request for nonsmoking for medical reasons and got a smoking room. Or someone made a request NOT to have a handicapped room because they need a but for the kids and the wet floor is a risk so they are changed. Or they needed a first floor for an elderly groupmember and got something else. I could continue but you get the idea.

We completely agree with WDWGuru. We always book at our home resort at 11 months and request our favorite locations, non-smoking, but with no request for a specific floor. We vacation once a year for 12 nights and have gotten our request each time (different floor, but same buildings). We arrive from New York at approximately 1 P.M., and we would be disappointed if our reservation was altered because someone who arrived earlier (and who may have booked at only three months out) was given our pre-assigned location because they were informed of "all" locations ready for occupancy that day. I feel that the pre-assigned rooms should be kept separate from the choice offered to early-arriving guests.

I always get what I ask for at BWV:
1)top floor
2)non-smoking
3)far away from the elevators

Personally Me thinks its number three that gets me what I want!!

Made a ressie for BCV on the 1st day they accepted new reservations. When we checked in Aug 2002, we were not given a room with our request. I asked again, and the great CM at the desk really tried, but only one room was opening up that day that met all my requests and another DVC'er made the same requests only 8 Minutes earlier than me on that 1st day. Now, I was o hold 40 minutes that day, but hey, it was fair and I fully understood. Someday it might be me 8 minutes early and i get the room I really want. I hope this policy continues - first come first served. If other rooms or no request ressies are changed but the requests should be honored by ressie time and date IMHO> By the way - the CM's were laughing as they felt the 8 minutes was a new record!!!!!

I am new to the DVC (just joined Feb). The room assignment issue seems to be a hot topic. I thought about making a request for my room assignment, but there are so many choices and so many variables that can't decide! (I did REQ non-smoking)...
It seems like a lot of folks are real particular about the view (I don't think it matters to me). Do most folks who have been members for a while develop a desire for a certain view after years of experience staying at the DVC property or has the view always been important?
I was wondering do all the ressies have some sort of special requests (beyond smoking/non-smoking)? I'm really starting to worry, since I didn't state a preference, will my room be a broom closet out next to the security shack?

I wouldn't worry, I think most people just ask for things like smoking or non, handicapped or not, floor and maybe an area of the resort. I think few ask for specific rooms or have very detailed requests. We only ask for non smoking and NOT a handicapped room. Then if we have more than one room, we ask for them to be as close together as possible.

When I checked in Oct 24 I asked the CM if my room had been pre-assigned or if she was assigning one while I stood there. She told me it was already pre-assigned. She also said if you have specific requests (I always ask non-smoking, Old Turtle Pond area, and then list the four buildings I like the best) they are pre-assigned, but if you don't make a request they assign when you arrive. This sounds very fair to me. When someone gets there early they can pick from all the non-pre-assigned rooms.
