Central Air Question

To start off yes I know nothing on the subject so my quaestion may seem stupid

Last fall we were given a central air unit

last week DH ran the wire and the venting and hooked it up

it seems like every three days or so it freezes up and has to be shut off for several hours to thaw

we keep it at 68-70

is this the norm

I will call a service tech out if i have to but if this is normal why spend the $$$

There are a few things that could cause this. The filter being clogged, not enough coolant, and not big enough a unit for your house.
There may be more, but those are the ones that I can think of.

thank the unit is actually over kill for the size house would that matter??

do you mean the one on the cold air return or is there one on the unit itself

and coolant that i guess would be something a professional would have to fix??

If you're sure the unit is big enough. Then the air flow is being blocked somewhere. Check the filter and make sure it's clean. But the unit outside can get clogged too. Have a service guy show you how to clean it. Mine is simple, just use a hose and spray through the top, not the sides.

The coolant is something else you'll need them to come and do for you. Coolant is hard to get ahold of.

serena is right. Either clogged filter or low in coolant. If it's very low you should have him do a leak check too or you will be calling them back to refill and it's $$$$.
DH has gone to homes where the filters were terribly clogged or the outside unit was covered in leaves and dirt.

I have to clean the filter all the time. I was just looking at the outside and realized that could use a good cleaning too.
