Census~required by law??

HAHA!! I havent gotten one either! Our small town post office mailed them all back for box holders cause they werent individually labled for each box!:lmao:
Guess I will be looking forward to my visit:lmao:

Not one single person was fined during the last census 10 years ago for not filling it out.

My state has only had a 54% return rate, so the census workers are going to be VERY busy! I think it's sad that some people don't fill it out when really it helps everyone. Not saying the OP is doing that, but there certainly are people who are refusing to fill it out. They are only hurting their communities though.

It might be me knocking on your door to count you and your family! I go in for "enumerating" training in two weeks, then I may have 2-3 months of knocking on doors of folks who didn't send theirs back.

Disney money!

I hope I don't get hassled by anyone thinking I am "the man" and refusing to give info. I know there are people out there like that.

Good grief people.

If I asked "how much does it cost to fly to the moon" that does not in any way imply that I plan on flying to the moon.

Just sayin'.

I'm like Disney Queen, another one who will come and be knocking at your door;)! Please send it in and save me the trip. And please don't throw away those duplicates, or I"ll have to come and check on them.

Thanks!
Terri

Why would you have to check on duplicates if we already mailed the first one? :confused3

What are you talking about if you receive a duplicate & have already sent the original back you are to ignore the duplicate.

I have not received anything...even the letter telling I would get one:laughing:

Just FYI for those who did not receive a form: your public library should have a supply of blank census forms. Just take one, fill it out and mail it in.

We also received two. When I called the information number included with the form to find out what to do with the second one since the first had already been completed and sent in, the representative said to put 0 (zero) for the number of people in the household and send it in. Otherwise, we could see a worker at our door because the barcode on the second form would not have been read as received back. :confused3

The Census has run far beyond what the Constitution intended. The questions that are asked are not in the nature of what is mentioned in the Constitution.

The question it asks are personal, demographic questions which do not do anything related to what the Constitution says.

All the Constitution says is: Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct.

That means they count all citizens every ten years. Nothing about race, home ownership, religion, etc. Where does the Constitution give them the right to ask us these questions? Why is the government so intent on collecting this information which it wasn't granted the right to ask for?

I'm not sure exactly what the big deal is. If you ever look at demographic charts for towns, you'll see these things are included. Also, the census does not ask about religion (I'm looking at my duplicate copy right now). These aren't exactly questions worthy of freaking out over.

It's a big deal because the Constitution only gives them the right to count people. I'm not willing to cede powers to the federal government which they don't actually have. I'll let them count me, but I won't answer personal questions. Why are they asking about my race when the purpose of the census is to count for representation?

The Census was used and relied upon for the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. Had they not had this powerful information that they had no right to, they would have had a much tougher time committing such a dastardly and cowardice act.

Here's what the Census website says about duplicate questionnaires...

What do I do if I received more than one 2010 Census questionnaire?

If you received two or more questionnaires with the same address including any unit or apartment numbers, please complete one of them and mail it back in the postage-paid envelope we provided. You may later get a visit from a census worker to verify the duplication.

But if the questionnaires you received had different addresses, then please complete the one that represents your actual address and mail that back to us.

Well a good chuckle for the night at least.

ETA: After just some minor and quick research, I discovered that every census since 1790 has asked about race in one form another, and the original asked to distinguish "free whites" and "slaves". Eventually after the Civil War and the 14th amendment ratification, even "color" was asked to be distinguished. Today, instead of using these answers for discrimination, segregation, deportation, etc, the results are used by federal, state and local governments to monitor compliance with the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.
Just thought I'd share that for those who thing the whole "race" question thing is some new addition, when in fact it's been there from the very beginning. Just a different reason and approach.

What's the chuckle for? The Constitution says they get to count people every 10 years. They don't get to ask for my race, age, etc?

As far as internment goes. It has been shown that the Census Agency was heavily involved in tracking and internment of Japanese Americans. It's a shame those people willingly gave up the information that the government had no right to.

Because you're getting SO worked up over something they've been doing from the very first census. You give out more personal info on a credit card application. Don't answer if it freaks you out that much. But don't think you don't somehow give away personal information about yourself. Your username alone already gives out where you're at. In your previous posts, you've mentioned your age. So it's rather amusing you'll share that on the internet where anyone can get that info about you (oh, and public records as well), but heaven forbid the census gets it! So yeah, it's a little amusing to me. To each his own.

Actually, the constitution does not only give Congress the right to count people. There was a court case about this back in 1870. The courts decided that Congress could collect other statistics because the constitution does not prohibit it. So, whether you agree with it or not, the courts have decided that it is constitutional. As a result of this decision, Congress came up with title 13 of the U.S. code. This is the law that the U.S. census operates under.

As to the comments about internment camps - I know that today there is a group of people out there that believes the U.S. government has partnered with FEMA and has already built secret internment camps throughout the U.S. to imprison American citizens, and they are using the census to pick which Americans will be interned. Are you part of this group and do you share these concerns?

My instinct is to suspect resistance to cooperating with the census -- not the census itself.

I filled mine in and sent it back and had no problem doing it. But choosing to give your personal info on a credit card app or a message board is NOT the same thing as being told you have to do so under penalty of the law. I'm not getting involved in the argument itself, but your comparison has holes.

And I don't understand the need to laugh at people for their beliefs. I just don't get it at all.

Your county receives approximately $2500 for every person that is counted on a completed census form. Simply putting the number of people in your house is not considered a completed form. Don't you want you share of the pot? As far as age, it is important to know if there need to be additional schools because there are more children that will be entering them or additional roads because there will be more drivers, or additional senior facilities because of the age of the population. The questions are important to provide for services.

In addition, I don't remember the exact dollar amount, but it is around $75 each time a census worker is sent to your house to try and get the census form. Failure to fill out a form is only costing you money.
