Hi Everyone,
I've been spending the past couple of days researching cell phones and plans, and have found it to be incredibly confusing. DH and I currently use page plus, and have old phones, an iphone4 and an old slider. I've been researching sprint and verizon wireless, and I'm okay with doing a two year contract if we are locked in at a reasonable rate. We want to upgrade phones though, and are trying to find the best deal. We are looking at the newer iphones (6s or se) or the samsung galaxy s6 or s7. It seems like some stores have the phones for $199, but then the monthly charges are higher. For example, I'd like to do a plan like sprint, 2 lines at $20 each and $30 for 3gb of shared data, for a total of $70 a month. Any advice on how to go about getting the best deal on a newer model phone? Thanks!!

i suggest going in and talking ot them - you are going ot get your best info directly from them

My recommendation is to buy a newer used phone from a reputable eBay seller and go on a prepaid plan like Straight Talk or Cricket. I figure if I spread the cost of replacing my phone out over three years (I pay in full but if it costs $360 I just add $10/month to my monthly costs) this method costs me $50/month.

If you won't use much data, just buy the phone you want and sign up for Tracfone. I pay $30 every 3 months for 270 minutes, 270 texts, and 270 mb of data.

The fact of the matter is that those phones cost $600-$700. That is the real true retail price.

Get a $199 deal? You're just paying the difference in higher monthly fees. There's no such thing as a $200 iPhone 6. They just get you to pay it one way or the other.

So, consider used. Or shopping for deals at Target/Best Buy etc... Where they offer $100-$200 gift cards. Often there is even a gift card incentive to join Verizon, ATT, etc...

And don't be scared away by installment plans. They are often a 0% payment plan. Your choice to spend $600 upfront or spread it out $20/mo. It comes out the same.

My advice is shop for monthly service plan separate of phone cost. Find the monthly data/minutes/text price that works for you. Then shop phone. Either buy used, new for full price, or new with installments.

I agree with you. I bought a six month old iPhone 6 64 gb last fall for $450. I saved about 20% using eBay gift cards so I figure it cost me about $360. Way better than buying it new (and it was in perfect condition). I doubt I'll ever buy a new cell phone.

Sprint just had a deal on Galaxy S7s, actually. I have that plan, and it works great. I'd say your best bet is going to your local Sprint store and talking to the people there. The people in person can usually do more than on the phone. If you aren't near a store, use the online chat program on the website and just ask your question there. They are really helpful that way, and you have a paper trail.

This is exactly correct. DH and I are both on my parent's Sprint family plan. We pay them $60 per month for two lines. We both have a iPhone 4s and thought about upgrading our phones to the Samsung Galaxy s7 during a sale at Costco, but when we went in to talk to them about the deal, I made sure to ask if there would be any changes to the plan pricing because I didn't want to add any additional cost to our monthly payments. We learned that if you get any "subsidized phone" they then add a "term access fee" that ranges between $15 to $40 depending on the phone you get. So basically, you will pay the full retail cost of that phone no matter what.

Our plan is when we decide to upgrade, we will do this: http://www.apple.com/shop/iphone/iphone-upgrade-program
We will ignore the upgrade option after 12 months, because you are loosing a ton of value. We will instead pay it off over 24 months and make sure the phone is in good condition (apple care coverage is included with this deal) and then we will sell it and use that money to get a new phone under the same plan (if it still exists).

DH and I have Tracfone and just upgraded to a "smart" phone. We pay $100 for a year service and triple minutes (1200) I usually add a few cards $29 a year because I talk and text a lot more. I got my phone on Ebay for $50 new. You can ck on the Tracfone site to see what phones are good in your area. We got a refurbished phone for my sister for $5 with a year card on their website. As for the data I've never used much of it at all. Never had any issues with reception either and I travel quite a bit. I've used it in 7 states and haven't had any problems.

The SE is only $399 from Apple and comes unlocked. If the iPhone is what you're looking for and you don't mind the size then imo it's a great option and put it on prepaid. Also Straight talk with $45 a month and they sell the iPhone at a fairly decent discount(the 6 plus is $499).

There are also new phones for a good value that are not the Samsung and iPhone....Like the Nexus phones, ZTE Axon 7, Moto G, Moto X, One Plus 3, Nextbit Robin, Blackberry Priv, etc.

If you can wait till Black Friday you might find even better deals....The last cpl years they've sold the recent Samsung phone for $199 on Black Friday. It's a killer deal if you can get your hands on it but there certainly a lot of very nice unlocked phones nowadays that don't cost an arm and a leg.

While it's true that it's 0% interest....generally you're going to pay more money for postpaid service with a high end phone over just using a prepaid that saves significantly on taxes. Postpaid generally is 20%+ added to the total cost while Cricket is all included in the cost.

Edit - Swappa is another good place to go for used phones. If you do end up buying a used phone though check to make sure it's paid off. There is a chance they can report stolen or if it's on a payment plan and they just stop paying then your phone will get blacklisted.

We had the family share plan as well (unlimited data, unlimited texts and 1500 minutes of shared talk) and I was terrified of getting rid of it. We had 4 lines (me, DH, our "home" phone, and my sister's phone) and 2 tablets which each had 2GB of data per month. Because we had unlimited data, there was an additional charge of $30/month per phone to use it as a hotspot. Since my sister did not have internet at her house, she added that option. Our phones were all bought under the 2-yr agreement, but we completed that already. Our bill, including my work discount, came to about $325/month.

I recently went into the store to inquire about DD's tablet that had stopped working. We ended up talking about our plan and I asked about the process and cost for activating our old iPhone 4's for our DD's. They certainly don't need phones yet, but I was trying to evaluate our options. The rep was so helpful and genuinely listened to my concerns. I told him that we use a "lot" of data because I am always streaming music and videos at work and I don't want to have to chase down wi-fi hotspots all day. I also told him that we are NOT interested in anything that will INCREASE our bill, actually, quite the opposite. He asked me if he could look into my account and evaluate our usage and give me a call later. I agreed, since I had nothing to lose. He called me back about an hour later with great news. He told me he has a plan for us and wondered if I would prefer to discuss it in person. Since we live about 5 minutes away, I went down to the store. It was worth it! Here's what we ended up with....

We bought a 20GB shared data plan with unlimited text and talk. This includes up to 10 devices (tablets or phones) and so we had 4 phones and 2 tablets. The rep then activated our other 2 iPhone 4S for the kids, bringing our total devices up to 8. Since the data plan is now capped, ALL of the phones can be used as a hotspot so that $30/month fee was removed. They had a promo going on which gives an additional 2GB of shared data per device for as long as you keep the plan. That bumps our total shared data up to 36GB. I was very nervous, but he said that he'd evaluated our usage for the past year and we never went over 14GB in any month and averaged about 10GB. That really made me feel better, but then I was still very skeptical. The rep was AMAZING...he told me that because we had been customers of Sprint for 19 years, he was able to WAIVE the subsidized phone fee that would have applied to DD's phones (at $30/month, PER PHONE!) and our total bill would be $275/month on the new plan. Seemed like a no-brainer so we went for it. We ran into a snag when they tried to activate the phone (my old one) for DD13. They asked me where I bought it because it was showing that it was a Boost phone (or something like that) and they couldn't activate it. I told them I'd bought my iPhone 4S from them, in that store, but I had to replace it under their warranty and they replaced it with a refurbished phone. It took them a while, and I suspect they were trying to verify my story since they were basically accusing me of trying to bring over a non-Sprint phone, but they finally came out with a huge surprise. They asked DD13 if she'd like a new phone instead...AT NO CHARGE! Since they couldn't activate the iPhone 4S (presumably due to an error somewhere on their end), they offered her an iPhone 5c in pink instead. It's a refurbished one, but it looks brand new to her and she loved it. Since DD10's tablet was not reparable (and that was the whole issue that started this all), I ended up paying $80 and buying her a new Galaxy Tab E to replace the Tab 3 that was broken. I had to sign up for the 2yr agreement but I have no intentions of switching at this point.

After about three days, I looked at my account and saw that we were only given 20GB of data, not the 36GB we were promised. I stopped in to the store and spoke with the same rep. He remembered our discussion and said he'd look into it. He assumed that they somehow forgot to add the promo. He looked at the account and realized that was the case, but he also checked to make sure that the subsidized phone fee was still removed (via manual override) and it was. He said, "I'll take care of you...I don't want you to worry one bit". Two days later, I looked again and saw that we now have 40GB of data! I stopped in to the store for a minor issue with one of our devices and he asked me if I checked my account. I said, "Yeah...you fixed it good!" He said that ALL of our phones are eligible for an upgrade and the subsidized phone override will remain in effect for as long as we have the plan. He also told me that he authorized the 2GB of bonus data for all 10 devices that we are eligible for, not just the 8 that we have. I tell you what, Sprint (and this store in particular) has earned a customer for life! I could not be happier with the customer service I received.

My family has been using Virgin Mobile for years. We do have to buy the phone upfront but then pay much lower monthly rates and no contract. If you can keep your phone for a good long time, once you hit about 19 months, you'll find you're saving money over any other contract plan. The longer you keep your phone the more you save. Just a thought. And they do run deals on phone occasionally, so if you aren't in a hurry, you can keep any eye out. (right now they have the 5s at $199, which is better than what you currently have, but is an outdated phone).

So there isn't a fee if you bring your own phone. And you can bring any phone as long as it works with Sprint's network. You can activate any phone to an existing or new plan, so what the rep told you isn't really true. A subsidized phone is a phone that you get from the carrier (or at a store like Target, Best Buy, etc.) that costs less than the retail cost. So if you get an iPhone 6s for $199 during a promo instead of paying the full retail cost, that is considered a subsidized phone.

He said that ALL of our phones are eligible for an upgrade and the subsidized phone override will remain in effect for as long as we have the plan.

Also, I would be very weary regarding the upgrades. My grandfather is also on my parent's Sprint plan. He went two years ago to upgrade his phone. They told him they "waived" the upgrade fee and the term access fees. Well, they only waived them for two years and then the phone bill jumped up by $30 a month. My dad had to spend many hours on the phone with Sprint and go into the Sprint store several times in order to work it out. He ended up paying a flat fee to basically buy out the remaining value of my grandpa's subsidized iPhone in order for them to remove that term access fee, which would have continued for as long as he had the phone.

Basically, just be careful and if you can, make sure you have some kind of email stating everything you were promised in your plan. Otherwise, you have no proof.

That's how it was explained to me too....but they said that our phones were "subsidized phones" because that was the method we'd originally used to purchase them. We got them for $99/each with the 2-yr agreement so even though the agreement has elapsed, the phones are still considered "subsidized". I'm not sure that it is 100% true or accurate, but that is how it was explained to me.

That is pretty strange, because when you bring a phone to add to a plan, it should not matter when or how they were obtained, as long as you own them outright. Seems untrue, but that is the problem with these phone carriers. Nothing is transparent and there are no laws requiring transparency in pricing.
