I need a new cell phone for several reasons but I can't upgrade for another 10months. Has anyone ever bought one NOT at the same place you have service, such as ebay??? Just wondering if anyone has had dealt with this issue before.

Both DBF and I have gotten phones off of Ebay. Just check the seller's feedback. DBF's last phone he bought off Ebay was the European version. I have the US version and there are some differences. Nothing major. I think the biggest was that his charger came with a US adapter to plug in the wall. But out off all the phones we have gotten off Ebay, that was the first time that had happened. Why I think he got the European version is because he got it before it was released in the US.

We always buy new/unused phones, I have no experience of buying used phones off Ebay.

Also make sure the description says "Unlocked". Once you get it you just pop your SIM card in and you're good to go.

Hope this helps!

Yes that helps me a lot....I appreciate it!!

Any other experiences out there??

As a matter of fact, I just returned the 4th ebay purchased phone today! I've had horrible experiences.

Over the holidays, DD dropped her phone in a glass of Dr. Pepper. Don't ask. We are due for early upgrades in February, so she needed a phone to get by for just a few months. I bought a used Verizon Chocolate on ebay for $51.00 = shipping. It arrived a few days later with a free wall charger and a free car charger. The phone worked fine for the first couple of weeks. Then, it started having problems (DD couldn't hear the other person unless she put it on speaker-phone. A couple of days later, the screen went white. I emailed the seller and he said to send it back and he'd send a replacement (he had a 30 day warranty).

Ten days later a new phone arrived. When I went through the steps to activate it, it would not activate. I called Verizon and they said the ESN# was reported as lost or stolen so the phone would not activate. I emailed the seller again and he said to send it back and he'd send another one.

Another 10 days goes by along with my expense at all of the return packaging and postage. The 3rd phone arrived and it wouldn't charge. I kept getting a "use authentic battery" message and then the phone would power off. I cleaned the connectors real good and was able to get it to turn on and charge, but every time DD closed the phone, it shut off. It got to the point that it would not come back on unless it was plugged in.

I emailed the seller again, this time quite upset. He emailed me back and said he didn't believe me when I said this phone was bad, too! What nerve! I sent him back the 3rd phone for a refund. I have yet to receive the refund.

In the meantime, I bought another phone off ebay for DD. When it arrived, I noticed the battery door was a different shade than the rest of the phone. I took off the door and saw that the white dot was dark red, so the phone had water damage. It worked okay, but since the seller only had a 7 day return and didn't mention in the auction that the phone was water-damaged, I sent it back (it could have died on me right after her warranty expired).

DD has another week before we can get her a discounted phone at Verizon. I do not recommend you purchase a phone off of ebay. If you want the name of the seller I bought from (he has lots of auctions), PM me and I'll give you his name.

I bought my phone off ebay after my niece dropped the first one in the sink. I paid around $50 and never had a problem. Then when I could upgrade, I bought a refurbished one from ATT--my carrier--for a fraction of the cost of a new one. It's never given me a problem, either.

I know with Verizon you can get early upgrades, before your 2 year contract is up. Sometimes they have free phones on these but usually there is a $40 or so charge.

We bought one off of ebay and didn't have a problem. When we were looking we just looked for phone compatible with our plan. My DD's phone quit working and we weren't due for a free upgrade. So we gave DH's phone to DD since he did not use his much and then purchased one off of ebay for DH. We got it quickly and is was as it was described - new in box.

I would go with PrettyPrincessBelle's advice and always check the seller's feedback score and the actual feedback itself. We do this with any auction that we bid on and have never had a problem. One of the last things that we purchased was a mirror from the Polynesian Resort. When it arrived the frame was cracked. We contacted the seller and they sent another one to us, no questions asked. When it arrived they had really packed it so that there would be no problems. Now not only do we have two Polynesian Resort mirrors, but we have a king sized comforter from one of the All-Star resorts. :lmao:

We've bought new and used phones off ebay on a few occasions. My kids seem to break phones quite often, so we need new phones before the 2 years are up.

Never had a problem.

Sorry, I don't want to completely hijack the thread but how does this work with Verizon? Do I just buy a phone and then call to have it activated?
