DH and I are thinking of heading to cedar point the last weekend of august. We are hoping most kids will be back home getting ready for school to start. Is this true? Anyone been this time of year? Any suggestions on places to eat or stay in the area. We will probably be in the area for 2 days and 3 nights. Thanks for any info :goodvibes

I was there the week before Labor day in 2002. I think we were there Monday - Wednesday. The crowds were light. The only long lines were for Millenium and a couple of newer coasters (can't remmeber their names now). We did those first thing or took advantage of early entry since we were staying at the Breakers. Most rides we could practically walk on.

I don't know anything about it as I'm not big on roller coasters. Just felt like telling ya that I'll be there with the band June 20th I think. I will probably just sit on a bench all day, but it should be fun. My friends will probably coax me on one or two coasters throughout the day.

Well I can tell you that most of the Toledo area schools start the Tuesday or Wednesday before Labor Day. I am in a school that starts one week prior to that (yes, a week ahead of my own children again, darn it, but I have 3 days alone to enjoy in June). A lot of kids from around here get season passes so they will be thinning out by them, esp. the fall athletes and band members practicing daily.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Hoping that the crowds have thinned out by then. I have heard that the lines can get pretty rough.

That should be a good time to go. We go quite often, once the kids are in school the crowds do thin. We are near Cleveland, our kids go back the last week of August. Sorry no suggestion on where to stay, we stay near Put-In-Bay at a family members condo. I have heard Breakers is nice.

We've been a few times at the end of August and the crowds are normally quite manageable. Have fun...it's our favorite place to go for coasters! :)

Cedar Point, especially on weekdays, thins out a whole lot end of August. They have their own hotels, and there are a gazillion little establishments around, too. Some look nice, some sleazy. We live too close to sleep there, so I can't really give you any recommendations.

They moved a lot of rides from nearby Geauga Lake over to Cedar Point, so there is a lot more there than coasters now. But the coasters can't be beat. That new one - Top Thrill Dragster, I think it is called, was a lot of fun.

Put-In-Bay has some nice, relaxing areas and some, um, the slang term is "Puttin-out bay." Meat markets. So, choose wisely if you're going that way.

Really? My in-laws seem to think thats a great area but then they haven't been there in about ten years. Sleazy and dirty is what I am trying to avoid. I am spoiled knowing that if I go and stay at Disney it will be nice and clean and fun. But my DH loves coasters and I want to go so he will be happy. Thank you everyone for your help. If any one has suggestions on where to stay and eat I would appreciate that too. THANKS EVERYONE!!!! :)

Most (if not all) of the local schools will be back in session by then. Crowds will be very light on weekdays.
As far as places to stay, there are SEVERAL hotels on Rt. 250 (Milan Rd.)
If you have a specific one to ask about, I might be able to give you a heads up.

They moved a lot of rides from nearby Geauga Lake over to Cedar Point, so there is a lot more there than coasters now.

I have never heard of this? We go to CP every year. Which rides have been moved from Geauga Lake?

If you're not into coasters, Cedar Point has lots of shows and entertainment. There are also lots of rides for those of us scardey cats! Even though CP is known for its roller coasters, there have always been lots of other things to do there.
