CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

Bad news from JNJ: their vaccine is only 72% efficacy and is less effective than that against some strains.
J&J decided to go for a single dose trial first.

They are following up with a 2 dose trial now.

In the mean time until we can get 100% efficacy we just all need to spend another couple years in our basements. It's the least we can do!

Um nope, 100% will never happen. Covid is now like everything else in life just something to live with, can't hide away for ever and mask and social distance people either. Life has risks no matter what you do.

Nothing really has changed though, correct?

Biden's timeline was not including the JnJ vaccine, so we still have Pfizer and Moderna coming to us and we can be fully vaccinated by summer(ish).

I don't understand the doom/gloom on this announcement. (Not just here)

I believe so I don't think he factored JnJ in at all. JnJ will be still great for low income/homeless and places and places where getting the second dose to them will be a challenge both on logistics and them not wanting to get a second.

Because the goal posts have been moved to accept nothing short of total elimination!

Yup, its so stupid it will never happen.

"We're 85% effective at preventing severe disease, which we define as disease that makes you feel particularly sick at home, or may go to the hospital, or worse," Dr. Mathai Mammen, global head of research and development at Johnson & Johnson, told CNN.

This is a key quote also with how they are defining severe, even just making you stay home from work is considered severe. Which many times most people wouldn't say they have a severe case of what ever it is.

Hmmm, Pfizer and Moderna 90%+ effectiveness. JnJ 74% effectiveness. I know which one I want. I will seek out a place that offers Pfizer and Moderna.

Again, this is a very poor way to interpret these numbers...but your point is important because this is definitely going to be driving the dialogue.

That's funny! I have Moderna and get my second dose next week and I was getting jealous of the people who are only going to need one vaccine! (now maybe I'm not so jealous :D )
JMO, Boosters...maybe multiple over years...will be part of our lives going forward. I don't see how we maintain protection from the ever evolving virus without them.

If someone said to me, "You can have J&J today, or Pfizer/Moderna in September," my butt would be in the Walgreens so fast, I'd leave flames on the highway.

CNBC had a piece this morning and the expert said there should be no reason why you couldn't get one today and the "better" one later if you wanted. I'd just be happy to have any protection at this point! Especially since JJ wil likely prevent hospitalization and death. Yeah, it'd be great if I wouldn't get anything at all, but I'll take "not dead" as good enough for now.

Perfectly said.

I know that.
I was speaking to the general discussion. It's going to be a big issue as folks mull over options. (Although I doubt in reality we are going to have a lot of vaccine brand choice.)
I should have made it clear I was not solely addressing you.

I don't think you can compare the numbers like that.

Pfizer and Moderna ran their trials before the various "super" variants recently in the news were out and about. There have been no trials run to show how those vaccines will perform.

From J&J preliminary numbers:
72% efficacy in the US
57% in South Africa

J&J knows much better then Pfizer or Moderna how their vaccine performs in the real world against the South African variant.

But people will incorrectly compare numbers and draw the wrong conclusions and perhaps pass up a vaccine opportunity.

It may be a situation where they give the J&J vaccine to younger people who are less at risk for severe disease. I think the 85% effectiveness against severe disease is good because that is what is causing all of the lockdowns and restrictions are hospitals getting overwhelmed. Again this is all my understanding.
