CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

My tribe put up a facebook post yesterday afternoon that they are now making appointments for all tribal members 18+ regardless of where they live. I didn't see it until this morning, called and left a message asking for an appointment, no idea when I will get one, but I'm willing to drive the 250 miles each way to get a vaccine. Previous to yesterday it was 65+ and living on the reservation.

Another of the local tribes had extra vaccines, they reached out to the local public school district that services the reservation and got appointments for all of the teachers in that district that wanted one.

I will take whatever is offered to me, which I highly suspect will be the J&J vaccine. I already hear other people tell me that they want “the good stuff,” and not the J&J one.
If someone is getting a vaccine within the next month or two, I will say the chance of getting a J&J vaccine is going to be extremely low given how many doses are expected to be out between the three vaccines in the near term.

More failings of the media. It's going to be up to doctors and pharmacists to properly explain this one.
To be fair, the misunderstanding is also a result of the general population just not understanding how to distinguish data parameters. There are also some outlets that have been explaining the nuance in the reported data. But, for many people, I do believe they’ll just see two numbers and believe them to be equal weight, incorrectly.

I keep hearing on the news that the cdc is concerned because numbers are rising. They are concerned with the variants and states opting up too early:

Feb. 26, 2021 -- After several weeks of declining, COVID-19 numbers are back on the rise and new variants continue to emerge, according to White House officials -- just as states begin to lift restrictions and open doors to restaurants and businesses.
CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, MD, reported during a Friday COVID-19 briefing that covid cases and deaths have increased over the past few days. On Monday, she reported a 7-day average of 66,000 cases and 1,900 deaths per day. Those numbers increased over 4 days to 66,350 and 2,000, respectively.

I saw that and it’s exactly what I was afraid of. Numbers rise a bit and now the story will be “here come the variants.” It’s exhausting.

Soooooo exhausting. We hear great news, then bad news. Hopes up, hopes dashed.

I don’t think we should look at it as our hope being dashed. We’ve seen cases going almost straight down for a few weeks now. It’s normal for there to be a pause, even with an uptick or even a small rise in cases. I’m still hopeful we’re really heading in the right direction.

The media has been clamoring to freak us out about variants since prior to Christmas, the increases this week if you want to call them that are likely due to underreporting last week (Presidents Day and Snowpacalypse). The positivity rate continues to plummet, and cases are falling in almost all states this week except those that dealt with the storms last week. Look at Texas (the 2nd most populated state), reported cases there are triple today what they were last Friday.

So an interesting thing that is happening in my county but is actually more part of a state-wide thing.

The county announced they will stop receiving Moderna and will only be receiving Pfizer; that decision comes more from the state as the counties do not have any say on what vaccine comes their way. The reason for not getting Moderna anymore: they have the ability to cold-storage Pfizer rural counties don't have it nearly as easily. The state has begun saving Moderna doses and will begin diverting to counties that don't have the ultra-cold storage capabilities as much. Present numbers list the state has administered 55.74% Moderna and 44.26% Pfizer.

Now here's where everyone's "just get it in arms" thing comes into play. The county stresses it has enough doses left for people's 2nd dose (thank goodness for that!) of Moderna but is hoping everyone will get their 2nd doses on a March 5th clinic. If you can't you need to contact the county and they will do everything in their power to get you that 2nd dose..but reading between the lines you may be outside your 28 day window though the article mentions up to a 42-day window.

The county has NOT been scheduling automatically people's 2nd dose because they did not have consistent supply coming their way (which is absolutely true looking at the county's covid website). That will soon change and now 2nd dose appointments will be scheduled for 3 weeks from your first (as it will be Pfizer going forward) when you are at your first appointment.

Whew all that out there now it will be interesting what J&J will bring.

I understand that (some)media are to blame for seeming to only share the bad news. But the bad news today (that cases are rising, maybe b/c of variants, ect..) was straight from the CDC. They have no reason to lie, correct?

Here’s something interesting about J&J’s vaccine that has been mentioned in the news but probably not as extensively for most people to know about. But, possible many here have heard by now.

J&J is currently conducting a 2-dose trial ( on day 57) and they expect the data to be available sometime in May.

The efficacy from their recent completed study showed it could be better. And J&J is studying exactly that, whether their vaccine could be more effective with variants by a 2nd dose. For example, at day 28, the vaccine efficacy to prevent moderate to severe infection among predominant South African variant was about ~60% with a single dose. And, as have been discussed here that there needs to be an asterisk on the J&J numbers when comparing to Pfizer and Moderna, the efficacy from US participants was lower than Pfizer’s and Moderna’s.

For now, it means more needles in arms. And the FDA committee said that it should be looked at as comparable to Pfizer and Moderna.

I believe they are relatively comparable as well with +/- 15% efficacy. Not sure what you were referring to with “more needles in arms”, but, yes, it does mean another vaccine that can be distributed and another vaccine that will likely need boosters.

I'm hoping at this point, what comes from the CDC is straight facts, without spin or omission.

I understand that people are fatigued, and I am so over it myself. But it's possible to hear not rosy news and accept it for what it is - facts. At least, it should be possible.
