CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

My problem with all of this is we were all told that our governments will follow the SCIENCE. How is it the science is different in Ca than Fl, or Tx, or Ill, or NY, or Mi, or Oh???? It is the total lack of consistantcy that is driving everyone Crazy. That is driving normally very smart people to saying I will never take a vaccine, or saying no matter what we should always wear masks. The leaders of our country (BOTH parties) are to fault for this. In the past, during a crisis this country would come together for a common goal. Writing that last line I was in disgust at how things have turned out.

Well, because they aren't REALLY following the science.

In CA, we have asked our governor to share the science he is using to push his restrictions and he, so far, has refused to share it. His favorite phrase is "we will be led by the science and data."

The ONLY time he has actually provided any verifiable studies to back his claims is for the recent school reopening plan. So, he has been invoking "science and data" for almost a year to justify closures, lockdowns and restrictions with no public sharing of the "science and data" he is using.

This is why we have so much distrust in what people in positions of power and influence are saying.

I still firmly believe that if the messaging from the very top from the beginning had been science based, transparent, truthful, and consistent, we'd be in a much better place now. Not only regarding deaths, but in the public's understanding of what's happening, what's required, how to trust the vaccine, everything. That it was not any of those things, and in fact each state was encouraged to do it's own thing, resulted in just that - each state coming up with it's own plan and messaging. Since the whole country was already in a heated "us vs. them" position, that made those local decisions that much more entrenched. That genie is well out of the bottle now, so I think all those "at the top" can do is try to be truthful and consistent now. There will always be people who don't trust or believe, but I do think they'd be a much smaller portion than what we have currently.

The considerable damage to public messaging, public health, and civic duty will be generations in repairing.

Didn't he actually say the data they use was too complicated to actually share with people?

Yeah, a few times. He said it would "confuse" people. This reality was, the way they are calculating the metrics MAKES NO SENSE and is overly convoluted and doesn't actually mirror what is going on. It's a bunch of b.s., basically.

Just for the sake of the political nature of this commentary, I am 100% neutral on Gavin Newsom's qualities as a governor. Exactly down the middle.

What “science” are you looking for? You can find all the science you want online.

This whole situation boils down to the differences in people’s perceptions of the pandemic based on one’s predisposed beliefs. I don’t think any “science” is strong enough to overcome that in the general population.

On a positive note I was quite stunned at how low NV and WA (where my DD is) numbers were today. I know they skew lower on Mondays but I haven’t seen them that low since the beginning. I’m starting to see a little light at the end of the tunnel.

Well, for starters I'd like the science that shows the following:

1. That OUTDOOR dining spreads coronavirus
2. That primarily outdoor THEME PARKS are a high risk setting
3. That movie theaters are safe
4. That swimming pools and playgrounds are a high risk setting
5. That hiking trails and beaches are a high risk setting (both things that were closed in CA for long periods of time last year)
6. That getting a haircut or your nails done is a high risk activity

There is no scientific proof for ANY of that, yet those rules were made using "science and data", allegedly. In fact, real world data shows that NONE of those things is an issue. Most of these are STILL restricted activities in our state.

This is a great thread. It has made it to 215 pages. It’s a great place for people to weed through all the info out there. I’d like to see it continue so if we could stop skirting forbidden topics it would be appreciated.

We are talking about science here. What is forbidden about that? It's relevant to the topic at hand.

It’s the “who did or did not” follow the science that can get us in trouble. Folks are free to discuss how they want of course but all it takes is one mod to foresee things going sideways and we lose a good thread.

I agree that the messaging from the federal government was a mess but I disagree that all states should follow the same approach. It is very clear that each state has different needs and was hit differently by this pandemic. States rights are important and these decisions should be made locally with a support structure from the federal government. There is a reason our constitution is written the way it is.

Maybe not the same approach, but based on the same science as is available at the time, with the same messaging, and with equal access to equipment, testing, and vaccines.

For instance - "The nationally recognized impartial institute research suggests masks decrease transmission by X percentage, so as the governor of this state, we feel that's a good reason to wear masks to protect our citizens" or "....so we feel that's an acceptable risk, we have the medical facilities to care for you, and so we will not mandate masks." Different outcomes, but all using the same data and none acting like the data itself has an agenda.

Also, in a more cohesive less adversarial climate (and one with a significantly more robust public health infrastructure), data from those different states might have been more easily shared, so that as the pandemic goes on, we can see what actually did or did not work. This would help states determine what is best practice and also help with management of the next disease to come around.

Yep. Lack of transparency and lack of consistency.

My state is and has been a lot more moderate than California, but we never did get a convincing explanation of why Walmart and Lowes could operate at reduced capacity but mom & pop retailers weren't even allowed to operate on a curbside-only model back in the spring. Or why casinos were allowed to operate, with a mask mandate, while gyms, bowling alleys and all other indoor entainment venues were required to close. And now you can go out to eat in a restaurant but movie theatres aren't allowed to offer concessions, which is a de facto closure order since without them there's no profit. So I can drive down the main street of my town and have my pick of places to sit, maskless, for a couple hours while I eat and drink, but I cannot do so if the venue happens to show movies rather than existing only to serve food, nor can I get a soda or an order of fries from the snack bar while bowling with the kids.

I think confidence and trust would have been a lot better if the response was even across the board - ie, all retail curbside only except food & pharmacies, or no indoor entertainments open, or no maskless indoor venues open, or whatever - and the data used to make those decisions was clearly cited. But what has ended up happening instead looks a lot like caring about some industries and businesses more than others.

But how about those energy prices, huh? Or the insane prices for insurance and property tax. States get their money one way or another.

I wish more people felt the same as you do and stayed put in CA. My friend who is a realtor in Austin is selling multiple houses a day, getting ridiculous offers, sometimes house not even seen by the buyer. It's driving up prices tremendously. They are mainly leaving because they are fed up with the CA government, which will never change.

It was the opposite in my area, movie theaters eventually were able to reopen but even in the spring during stay at home order they could sell concessions curbside and some did just to get some money coming through.

Our Theater in the Park switched up and did movies in the park last summer since production was shut down. They had something like 250 people allowable, put 8ft circles on the ground spaced 6 ft apart. If you were in the circle you didn't need your mask but if you got up to go get concessions (which yes they had) or go to the restroom or to walk around you needed your mask. It was outdoors but hardly an imposition to us to wear our masks when we got up out of the circle. We did one movie and saw Frozen II. We have been to the movie theater in between Christmas and New Year's though masks are required unless eating and drinking (and yes concessions are allowed).
