CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

Dr. Scott Gottleib said today that you could start seeing improvement in nursing home deaths and hospitalizations as early as next week, as vaccinations start to kick in.

I knew data seems to be a bit slow to come in, and apparently we're doing better than other countries as far as number of vaccines produced and distributed, but we need to pick up the pace with respect to getting those vaccines into arms.

Agreed, but I think there's two things in play here:

1. I think the data as to how many have actually gotten vaccinated so far is VERY behind. I personally now know a number of people who've gotten it and a number who have appointments in the near future. I suspect the actually number who will be vaccinated in the next week will get the numbers far higher- we may just not know right away.

2. All the various organizations doing the actual vaccinating are figuring this out as they go. They will improve their day to day strategies and increase the number of actual shots being given every day.

I get it, but I'm obviously not just thinking this on my own. Public Health experts/officials have been screaming for months that they need more money for possibly the biggest vaccination effort in history. They're still screaming that now. It's eerily similar to our initial issues with PPE, testing and contact tracing. There are still issues with those three things in many parts of the country. We're not going to see things really begin to improve on a mass scale until these vaccines are in local pharmacies. We were told that 45 million doses would be shipped by the end of the year, and so many of us here figured at least 22.5 million people would have gotten their first dose by the end of the year (if they were saving the other 1/2 for the second dose).....we're at 4.6 million with 3 days left. I'm sorry, but we need to figure out a way to speed this up.

I do not disagree. My point is the numbers are likely higher than we think and day by day, as these systems are worked out, they WILL vaccinate more and more people.

VA Nursing home residents in south Louisiana received vaccines yesterday. There are 500 plus long term care or nursing care facilities in the state, so it will take a few weeks, but it is in progress. Some vaccines are here, waiting for CVS/Walgreens techs to be ready to come in and do it.
On the other vaccine thread I had just updated about our long-term care.

It's about 100K in MO and about 40K people in KS. The interesting thing is at least with CVS they will be using Pfizer in KS and Moderna in MO at least that's what the article said.

I read that the UK is close to approving AZ vaccine. I thought that one had issues and was on hold?

My son is in pharmacy school and is a pharm tech.

He is receiving emails daily from the major drugstores that are trying to recruit experienced students (son has one year of school left, and administered the flu shot last year) to volunteer to give the vaccine.

So far, he hasn't jumped to do it. Giving shots is not one of his preferred parts of pharmacy. And he's got a job, schoolwork, and a research project he's involved in.

Maybe, if there was pay involved, he would be more inclined to participate.

So, a question for the board: I don't think Disney World will employ a vaccine mandate (although Disneyland very well might), but might they reopen some areas that are still closed- VIP tours, shows, character meals- just for people who can demonstrate vaccination?

Someone created this thread for that topic: https://www.disboards.com/threads/covid-19-vaccine-question.3821264/ although looking at the thread not much discussion about Disney because truly we're not at the point of wide-spread vaccination. Requirements would be hard to come by when most of the population can't even get a vaccine at this point.

Your question and subsequent discussion though might be better suited for this thread https://www.disboards.com/threads/c...erational-updates-due-to-coronavirus.3796390/ where much of it is actually centered on up to date information on how the parks is being handled and mods who have knowledge can give continual updates :) Vaccination talks are probably fairly limited as we're only weeks into it as a nation at this point outside of clinical trials.

Today my county started sign ups for vaccines for residents over 65. I was trying to have my parents sign up but the website wasn’t working and by the time they got through all the slots were full. So frustrating.

Israel has already vaccinated 25% of its 65+ population. This WILL come together, folks!

Yeah...there's a woman on another COVID thread who brought this up. They're vaccinating around the clock....literally 24/7.....and they have 9 million people.

Another poster from there discussed this. They only have about 9million people far far far far fewer than we do. They can get through their population quicker.
Well, each state in the US is like a small country (based on population). So, shouldn't they be vaccinating at the same level in Israel. Each state was allowed to coordinate vaccinations based on their own guideline.

Edit, I posted this in another thread:
"Based on what is reported in my state, less than 3000 vaccines were administered yesterday. At this rate, it will take until next December to vaccinate half of the population of the state. They really need to figure this out soon! I thought we had several months to prepare for this!"

It would be amazing if we could do that. New Jersey is nearly the same size as Israel population-wise (9 million people).....and we are in no way, shape or form anywhere close to where Israel is with respect to inoculating all New Jerseyans. The fact that Israel has so much supply that they *can* vaccinate 24/7....says it all.
