CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

My governor announced yesterday that my state (CA) should be received 672,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine in the next few weeks. We're also getting 327,000 doses of the Pfizer one next week. Our local hospitals are filling up quickly right now, even here in the Bay Area. Hopefully the FDA issues their approval and frontline works and LTCF residents can receive their first doses soon.

I'm sure repeated exposure to the community at large is likely a component they were looking for.
Yeah a local who is frequenting the parks might heightened their interest. A one off traveler may not.
Oh, for sure. If I worked @ EPCOT, or my local grocery store I'm sure they would have begged me to participate. Turns out I can't get COVID working out of the office in my garage - who knew?

Latest report I head on national news this AM is the first doses should come Sun-Tues (12/13 - 12/15) depending on where you live, and yes, they will be administering vaccines 7 days a week.

I know this is probably state specific, but does anyone have any idea of how they are defining the "high risk" medical conditions to be in phase 2?

This is what I expect to happen. My parents’ doctor already does this for elderly patients who get the higher dose flu shot. Both my parents get the shot and then remain in a waiting area for 15-20 minutes in case of a reaction.
This is what they're doing in the UK, too:

"Some health workers who had spent months treating Covid patients cried upon getting the shot. By and large, people said they felt no more pain than they had from any other injection, though they were asked to sit for 15 minutes to make sure nothing went wrong."

I found this interesting too;
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-03496-7I am one in the chorus of people who, from the start advocated that schools should not be closed - at all. It's not out of the realm of possibility that the divine design for mass immunity to COVID is is through getting kids exposed to it. Too late now...
But you neglect to consider the adults who are being paid to supervise, teach and monitor the kids at school. Unless of course you were advocating for some sort of Lord of the Flies type experiment?

Not getting into it, because, as I said, it's too late now.

+1 (coming from someone who is married to a high school teacher).

If the Department of Education would have provided any sort of guidance for reopening safely it would be a different story, but they didn't do that.

Guys, 100% agree. Let's not get off topic, please.

...okay so only *you* are allowed to post off-topic stuff. Got it. 🙄

Back on topic I go, yet still related to my previous post: I wonder when teachers will get the vaccine? With essential workers? What does this mean for schools after winter breaks are over? I'm guessing mid-January will be the worst surge we have seen since people will ignore recommendations and still get together for Christmas.

If you read the article, it says that kids are often testing PCR negative, as in there is NOT enough detectable virus being shed, even when their blood shows antibodies after the fact (i.e. after being in the same home with infected family members). So, they are being exposed to the virus and their immune system is fighting it off BEFORE it replicates to the point of viral shedding. In these cases, they don't infect anyone else.

Pfizer has presented their data to the FDA:

EDIT: If you look at the 1:55PM update, it talks about reproductive toxicity studies and how those results will be coming soon...so we will know whether the vaccine is recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

EDIT #2: Live video of the meeting here: https://www.npr.org/sections/health...6/fda-advisers-weigh-pfizers-covid-19-vaccine

CNN (though not everyone's first choice for news) seems to be updating a little more frequently than statnews: https://www.cnn.com/world/live-news/coronavirus-pandemic-12-10-20-intl/index.html

It’s also being linked that kids under 12 especially Aren’t spreading it much if at all to adults

I thought this too until a toddler at my child's daycare ended up spreading it to a teacher after only 2 hours in the classroom. Still waiting to see who else in the class comes down with it. Just some personal experience.

I would guess it depends on each and every state.

Back when I mentioned the phases in my state I doubt many people's states have meatpacking workers on there considered essential and in the second phase.

I'm all for teachers getting the vaccine high enough on the list but my casual observation is that the teachers are getting it largely from their own community and not as a by-product of their occupation and its that occupation that would put them higher up on the list. That itself could reduce the priority. The schools here have staffing shortages (aside from the pressures due to all the craziness this year with what they are expected to do) largely due isolation and quarantine protocols not that entire schools have been stricken down with a mass outbreak.

It is still rare. There are always outliers to everything. Has it been for sure linked to the kid? Did the teacher go anywhere or do anything else? But if it was such a common occurance day cares and elementary schools would be having a lot more problams. And not all wear masks.

Here grades k-2 and almost no day cares/preschools wear masks and they aren’t exploding with issues

And at my child’s daycare the teachers spread it to each other and it appears no children got it.

Are you sure the teacher didn’t contract it from a different source and only take a test because of the toddler exposure? With the virus being so prevalent it’s hard to contact trace.

We could debate all day over what should have happened - but we've got what we've got now which is why I won't. It's just too emotional of a subject. How do you balance "teachers could get sick" with "kids are losing a year of education"? It doesn't matter if it was necessary - what's done is done, that's the route we went. Going forward, if it were up to me, health care workers get vaccinated next week (follow up 3 weeks later), TEACHERS are next. Schools open as soon as teachers get their shots - NO LATER than end of January. The surge should not matter if teachers are vaccinated and kids don't get sick. It's not up to me though, and "TEACHERS are next" are not words I have been hearing.
