“Both staff members reportedly had a significant history of allergic reactions and carried adrenaline autoinjectors, according to PA Media. Thousands overall are believed to have been vaccinated in the UK on Tuesday.”

I’m sure there will be lots of people posting on Facebook the dangers of this vaccine.
"Both are recovering well." 2 out of thousands that got vaccinated yesterday. Nothing to see here. Forge On!!!!

I thought it was no one with a history of reactions should get it. Not that NO ONE should get it.
Correct.

I believe the PP was pointing out that we should be prepared for having to rebut a wave of argument from the anti-vaxx contingent, who will surely be claiming that ANY incidence of anaphylaxis means that the vaccine is categorically unsafe.

As was pointed out, EVERY vaccine will trigger a small number of anaphylactic reactions. Precautions should be taken in the usual way to be ready to treat them, but the point of vaccination is to serve the greater good; to use exposure to a lesser danger to protect society from a widespread sure & deadly danger. That means accepting that a certain small percentage of people will win the crap lottery and be hurt by the vaccine. Anti-vaxxers are unwilling to accept that.

Frankly, we should all be praising these two people who got vaccinated knowing their own histories- if they can do it, we all can too.

Plus at least in these 2 people from the article "history of significant allergic reactions" which makes me wonder what these two individuals have done in the past. At least just looking at the two people they aren't general pop who suddenly have an allergic reaction, they are two people who have already had in the past know their bodies reaction severely.

The warning is "Any person with a history of a significant allergic reaction to a vaccine, medicine or food (such as previous history of anaphylactoid reaction or those who have been advised to carry an adrenaline autoinjector) should not receive the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine" which I guess was this not a warning before? Seems like it would be. I mentioned my sister-in-law has asthma but she does not carry an inhaler with her. She does own one but doesn't carry it with her.

If that is the warning, you're going to get a LOT of people who won't (shouldn't?) get the vaccine. DW is allergic to sulfa drugs (ok, so now she can't get the vaccine?). How many people are allergic to shellfish, peanuts, and other food?

Anaphylactic reaction. I have an allergy to sulfa, but it wasn't a severe anaphylactic reaction. I got a rash.

There's a difference between being allergic and having a *severe* allergic reaction (ie needing to use an epipen), not people who just get rashes or some other reaction.

Keep in mind they said significant and a history of it and those who carry an adrenaline autoinjector. It could preclude people for sure but it shouldn't be seen as just anyone with allergies to a vaccine, medicine or food because not everyone will fall into that category. Basically you took it in the direction that unfortunately many people will hear. People who have had severe reactions are usually already aware of such things they need to do.

Furthermore reading the article you'll see this "Vaccine expert Dr. Paul Offit said that rather than a "blanket recommendation" for people with allergies, "the smarter thing to do would be to try and look at these two patients and see what specific component of the vaccine they were allergic to."

We know you're already a bit iffy about the vaccine so it comes as no surprise the direction you took it, no offense meant just being practical. But hopefully reading the information contained within the article will at least put some of your worries about reactions at ease.

The flu vaccine has warnings for egg allergies. You can get a cell based alternative.

What’s the warning going to be for this new vaccine? That’s what I want to know.

You may want a disclaimer that you aren't making light of infertility, rather you are teasing the people who said the vaccine will make you infertile.

You know, just in case...

YES! This is exactly correct.

I actually almost mentioned the flu vaccine with the egg issue. For your second part that I don't know other than the warning mentioned in the article. If they could find out exactly what caused the reaction (which hopefully they are looking into it) maybe it will be like the flu vaccine-egg issue where they mention alternatives or just say don't take it for those who have issues with a specific ingredient or method to creating the vaccine.

Once people are informed, they’ll more likely get it or one of the other possible vaccines.

The article also says that they may recommend that people with significant allergies get the vaccine in a setting that is equipped to handle a serious allergic reaction, like a doctor's office rather than, say a drugstore pharmacy. Seems like an easy solution.

Canada has approved the Pfizer vaccine...they have enough doses to vaccinate more than a third of their adult population by year end.

It was being discussed on a different thread. They have issues with distribution of it. They will start with 14 distribution centers throughout the whole country including the territories. Presently Pfizer would have to be given at those distribution centers in Canada which is apparently causing an issue with getting long-term facility residents getting the vaccine if they cannot be transported. Also anyone in the more remote territories won't get it either. So amount of doses is less salient in the news to them at the moment.

I just received notification from Maricopa County Medical Reserve Crops in AZ. They are setting up large points of dispensing:
  • Greeter’s (ensure the person has an appointment)
  • Registration (verify registration in the automated tracking system, good computer aptitude required)
  • Traffic control (ensuring vehicles are moving smoothly/safely thru the POD ingress and egress)
  • Logistics and supply (moving equipment and supplies throughout the POD to support the staff)
  • Check-out (brief people on follow-up instructions and post-vaccination observation)
  • Post-observation (preferably EMT-trained or at least first-aid or CPR certified)
  • Vaccinators (current certification)
  • Reconstitution/vaccine mixing (current certification)
Based on this information, Post-observation is going to be managed by EMT's. At least there will be people trained to manage Anaphylactic reactions.

Are we in trouble if the Astra Zeneca vaccine does not come through? Will Moderna and Pfizer be able to handle the demand?
