Cat People... I need desperate help! (stinky issues)

Ok, first off I just have to shout, "I TOLD YOU SO!!!! "

There, better. I told my kids NOT to take the tape off the cat door leading to the basement because the lightweight kitten (9 months old) can't push the door with his fat head! Did that stop them, NO! I told everyone to keep the basement door OPEN until I get that cat door taped. Did they listen? NO! I asked my husband to rip the door off (I tried) for good. Did he do it? NO! So....

Sure enough we return from a weekend away, I left plenty of cat food, water, closed the windows, etc... someone SHUT the basement door . Yep. Now I located most of the "accidents", but some in the girls' room. I can't find anything, but it stinks to high heavens in there! We've sniffed the bedding, blankets, closet, etc... nothing. All the floor. Nothing. Unless it's under the beds.

Here is my question? Other than ripping out the rugs before Friday (we leave for WDW and have people staying with the kids), how can I eliminate the odor from their room? Should I just frebreeze the heck out under their beds? Is there something I can use to obsorb the odor?

Thanks for ANY advice! DH ripped the door off. Simple, really! He should have done it when I asked!

Unfortunatly, Febreeze just covers up the odor. Locating the
spot(s) and using a emzine based pet odor remover works best. Baking soda rubbed in the carpet and then vacuumed can help too.

Getting rid of the smell is important as cats tend to return to the scene of the crime, if you know what I mean...

Go to Petsmart and get a product specifically formulated to neutralize the odor. Most products just cover it up but even if you don't smell it your kitten will. You also need to retrain your kitten to use the box instead of the rug. I don't envy you.

You need to get down and dirty and clean every square inch with the cat neutralizer. I would also have the mattresses/bedding neutralized cleaned too. If it is not in the under the bed it is in the mattresses possibly. It is a frequent favorite of a cat "telling" you something isn't right.

UGH, I do NOT envy you either!

I have been there!

and I totally agree that the odors have to be eliminated not just covered up.. BUT.. in my experience the enzyme stuff makes it really really bad (stinky) for awhile.. it even says so on the bottle.

Febreeze did help a lot when I was going through this. The enzyme made the room unbearablely stinky while it was working.

I hate to say this but we opted to have the carpet replaced in just the corner where the lovely rescued kitty decided to deem his own private box.... all the other kitties were so interested in the spot I was just afraid they would use it too..and we were selling the house so I didnt want to take any chances.

Cat pee is SO hard to get rid of..if it stinks really really bad then there is a spot that needs attention!!

Check again for his hiding places...

I had a cat who likes to go behind the washing machine,
he also sprayed on everything made of fabric!

Check again to see if you missed a pile &
wash everything made of cloth that can be washed...

Also, Try**Bioclean**, it is a spray that will break down
any remaining enzymes & doesn't smell *bad awful*

And when you check for messes, use a black light. Organic messes will show up flourescent green under the black light -- that might help you locate the problem. Then use an enzymatic cleaner (Nature's Miracle, available at the pet stores, works well for us) thouroughly on that area.

They also make a spray that keeps your cats away from the general area. It's usually to keep them from clawing furniture, etc. But, it can mess up their new "doodie zone" real quick.
