I've been reading here on the DisBoards, trying to figure out what the age minimum is for the Castaway Cay 5k race. I've read that it's 10 years, 12 years, and that there is no minimum if under direct adult supervision. My boys are 9 and 11 and would love to run. I know it's an open course so anybody can do it, but they really want the bib and the medal at the end so they would need to be registered. Does anybody know if they would be allowed to register, according to Disney's rules? Also, if we would take longer to complete it than the cast member with the medals is at the finish line, would there still be a way to collect the medal later on? I realize the the medals are not that fancy, but my boys would want the souvenir. Thank you.

Our son did it last summer at 10, but our backup plan was for my husband or I to give him our number. :)

Yep, it's 10 years old. So your 9-year-old wouldn't get the bib or medal.

Thank you, it helps to let him know from the beginning that he won't be old enough this cruise.

Thank you, OP. I've been meaning to ask this very question. Following up question... is the 5k available only on select sailings or most stops at Castaway Cay?

Every stop at Castaway Cay as far as I know...not totally sure how it works for double dips though.

AFAIK, it's on all cruises, except those that have had the special Castaway Cay 5K events. Those were part of something called Run Disney (I think that was the name) and there have only been a couple of those. On double dips, I believe they only run it on the 1st day.

And the ones with the paid 5K ALSO had the free 5K later on that morning. The crazy fools who paid $75 (plus at least one race at the January marathon weekend or February Princess weekend) for the 5K got to get up at sick and wrong in the morning for their (our) race. The ones doing it for free got up a bit later. :) (and some people did the paid 5K, went back to the ship, signed in, and did the free 5K back to back)

The medal is much cooler than it used to be, by the way. Plan to book another cruise for when the 9 year old is 10. :)

The only things I've heard recently is that at least one double dip didn't have it for both days at Castaway. Not sure why.

If I recall correctly, our double dip last year had it both days. Of course, I've had a few cocktails in Skyline since then, so my memory may not be up to snuff...

But if he really wants to run with you and you think he is capable, you could always give him your bib and medal. This is not a chip timed race, the numbers on the bibs are not assigned to anyone in particular. It's very low key. I bet if you give him your bib when the race starts, they will hand him a medal at the end and he will get that feeling of accomplishment. Just don't take one yourself so that the numbers work out for everyone.

As an aside, my 8 (almost 9) year old didn't want to run with my 11 year old and I, but he had a great time running "races" at Scuttle's Cove while we were on the course.
