Airlines allow 2 handcarry for each passenger right? One backback and one roller bag, does this fall under 2 carry-ons?

Thanks!

Most airlines these days limit you to one carry-on and one personal item. The personal item can be a camera bag, laptop bag, purse, diaper bag, etc., so your backpack would probably count as long a it's a small backpack and can fit under the seat in front of you.

The airlines limit the size of carry-ons, so your roller bag may or may not work. Each airline has its own set of size limitation, so you will need to check with your airline to find out if your roller bag is small enough. Small roller bags are probably the most common type of carry-on these days.

I think the tallest a carry-on bag can be is 22", though my airline (i.e., Frontier) states that the bag cannot have total dimensions (height + width + depth) exceeding 49" and a weight of less than 35 lbs.

The TSA is typically very strict about the two item limit. I've seen people with a roller bag along with a beach-type bag then a relatively small purse being told to get rid of one of the items.

Very vaguely and roughly -- The "personal item" should be small enough that two of them will fit in the baggage sizing frame at the airport with room to spare, such as two briefcases side by side or two small backpacks side by side or two shoe boxes one atop the other.

What counts as a "personal item" still remains up to the gate agent. Passengers have been denied bringing on board both a roller board (sic) and a back pack.

Same experience here, ive had more problems with the TSA then the airline itself limiting amount and size of carry-ons...

Yes - you definately need to make sure your roll on is within guidelines for your airline. One thing I have done several times is to put my purse inside one of my "carry ons" until we are on the plane and then take my purse out, before I stow the bag overhead. I know I can't be the only person who does this. Before you can say anything - I'm very quick - I am not one of those people that delays the 100 folks trying to board behind me.

Also, note that if there isn't room for your carry-on, it gets checked anyway, even if you were entitled to have it on-boards with you. Always be sure that anything you must have with you (eyeglasses, medications, official papers, etc.) is in a separate bag that you can quickly pull out of your carry-on and put into a pocket (for example).

And it's appreciated!

I also take care to avoid delaying others when I get aboard. Keeping my carry-ons to an easily manageable size really helps me to get them stowed quickly and get into my seat without throwing them into anyone else's face.

It also helps me to get through the airport a lot easier. In the old days before 9/11, I had a small rolling suitcase that barely met the carry-on size requirements and fit everything I needed for a week-long trip. But navigating this thing through the airport, onto the plane, and into the overhead was a hassle; I have a much easier time now that I check a suitcase and just carry on my laptop and camera bag.

Those carry-on restrictions can be a hassle, but I think they save you more time and hassle than they cause.

I also put my purse in one of my carry-ons. I use a small duffle thats pretty much empty and it fits under the seat.

That's funny....I've never seen anyone questioned by TSA about carryons....I have one bag that's a little bigger than required, and never had a problem walking on with it.'

The baggage inspectors used to work for the airlines, and back then they did sometimes work to enforce baggage limits. That isn't the case any longer.

You are only allowed two items one of which is a personnal item. I have seen TSA be very strict about this. My last flight home (on business) was so packed that we were only allowed one item. I took all essentials out of my purse and put them in my computer case. Then my purse went into my carryon size bag and that was gate checked. I had nothing with me but my computer, wallet, cell phone and car keys. I was so happy when I saw that bag come out at the baggage claim at the end of the trip.

How the heck would the TSA know your flight was packed? On our flights, you go through security for about 100 gates. NO WAY would they know which ones were full, and which ones weren't.

That meets the requirements, and a "tote" bag that fits on top of that. I also have a fanny pack, which I wear, and no-one bats an eye. However, when I tried to board with another Larger tote bag, and the above, I had to check the carry on, which wasn't too bad, as it was the last to be placed on the plane. ;)

Sorry, I mixed two thoughts. TSA is strict about the two carryons. It was the airline (USAir) that restricted us to one item when we were boarding the plane. I had already placed my purse in my carry on because of TSA. When I realized at the gate that they were going to make me check my carryon, I had to get the purse out, remove the essentials, put the purse back in the bag. They (the airline) wouldn't even allow a computer plus a purse.

If you are flying out of a regional airport/airline you may not be able to take the rollon. At Christmas I was not able to take my 19" roll on it had to be gate checked. They insisted even though I knew it fit under the seat. And most flights I have been on count a back pack, not a purse, but a backpack as your carry-on and you would not be allowed your roll-on. I wish they would get even stricter about this. people are bringing too much on lately and it is getting hard to even find a place for your coat and it takes forever to board. IMO you are really stretching the one carry one and a personal item if you count a back pack as your small personal item.

Whatever airline you are flying on...go to their website and see what they say they allow....

Can't blame the TSA too much for carrying on too many/too big bags. They have ALOT of responsiblity to check all these bags and the more bags/bigger bags you have the more time it takes...which slows down lines.....

We just flew Airtran and were able to have 2 carry ons. DH had the rolling suitcase (19" I believe), I had a backpack and laptop. I shoved my purse in the backpack. Both kids had their backpacks as well.

I recommend backpacks also because they are easy to carry and can fit alot of stuff. As long as you dont bring a humoungous backpack, most regional carriers will let you carry it on....

I always take the LL Bean basic book bag. It fits under the seat, and I'm never questioned carrying it. I have gone through phases wher I did the carry-on only thing, but quickly realized it's much easier to navigate an airport without the rolling bag following me.
:p
