I will be going to Orlando for 3 days and would like to carry on luggage instead of check. The carry on size stated on the NWA site says:

Dimensions:

Cannot exceed 45 linear inches (9 inches by 14 inches by 22 inches)

So if I have a duffle bag that is 22(including wheels)x11x12 which is 45 linear inches will this be ok, or by stating the measurements above to they specificallly have to be those measurements or are they just giving an example? I realize a lot of the size can depend on how stuffed the overhead compartments are. How much room is underseats? I really want to avoid any surprises!

Thanks!

What matters is whether or not it can fit into the sizer. If your duffel bag can be bent into 9x14x22 you should be okay. However, note that it is completely up to the discretion of the gate agent, regardless.

That duffel bag won't fit under the seat, so you're basically competing for overhead space with everyone else. With a duffel bag you have an advantage, again, if it can be bent to fit whatever space is available.

The only way to avoid surprises is to check your luggage.

My case is an inch bigger and it fits easily! Don't put the bag in sideways that takes up too much room. Instead, the bag should fit with the wheels towards the window and the handle towards the isle in the overhead compartment. My Dh taught me this. It looks like it won't fit this way and that the top won't shut, but it as plenty of room!

Have fun!

I fly NWA out of MSP fairly often. They seldom say anything about a carry on before boarding unless it is really HUGE or you have more than 1 plus a personal item.

If there is going to be a problem, it will be that the overhead space is full - I've not seen anything with wheels that will fit properly under the seat in front of you. Anyway, if your bag won't fit in the overhead (sounds like it will) or the space is full when you board, you'll have to gate check it.

If you think there is any chance of having to gate check, make sure any medications or valuables can fit in your personal item (i.e., briefcase, purse, much smaller bag, etc.)

Thanks! I plan on packing light (we'll see) and there shoulld be some squishability (is that a word?), I just have to refrain from buying much while I'm there. I'll be at a conference 2 of the 3 days so I won't have too much free time for splurging!
