Caribbean Beach FAQ Part IV

Hi all! Just back from CBR! We had a fantastic time at the parks, but unfortunately, we have decided that on-site is not for us. I grew up in a large family (5 girls) so we always just rented a house as it was more economical and provided more space. DH and I also went for our honeymoon and we staying off-site as we couldn't afford on-site. With the current deals, we decided to give on-site a try.

Even though I requested Jamaica twice prior to leaving and again during online check-in, we were initially put in Barbados 16 next to the main road. All you could hear were the buses passing on the road. We called the front desk and asked for a transfer and were given Jamaica 41. Our luggage was delivered via Magical Express just fine. Jamaica was quiet, relaxing, and a short walk to Old Port Royale.

We usually go to WDW in July so we thought crowds were extremely manageable with short wait time for rides and attractions. We got everything we wanted to get done and more at the parks!

Unfortunately, bus service leaving the parks at night was a NIGHTMARE!!! Getting to the parks in the morning was not a problem - we waiting 15 minutes at most. Park close was a totally different story. The shortest time we waited for a bus at the end of the night was 30 minutes. One night at the Magic Kingdom we waiting - no joke - an hour and 15 minutes. And there were at least 4-5 buses worth of people behind us in line.

Now before I get flamed - I did the research before choosing a resort. I have been to WDW 15 times over the course of my life. I understand how the Disney system works. I also understand that CBR is one of the larger resorts at WDW. But, with that being said, we watched 2 Pop Century buses pull up every 15 minutes, while only 1 CBR bus pulled up every 25 minutes.

I felt horrible for the parents in line (we don't have kids yet) whose kids were tired and just wanted to go to sleep. I couldn't imagine putting my little ones through that when I can just hop on the tram and then throw them in the car to sleep on the way to our hotel.

Check-out was another disaster. We scheduled a bell services pick up for 9:30am (we needed to be on the 10:30am Magical Express bus). When we hadn't been picked up by 9:50am we called the front desk who transferred us to a not-so-magical bell services cast member who told us our van had just been dispatched. Bell services finally picked us up at 9:58am. I was panicked that we would not have airline check-in completed and still make the 10:30am bus. Fortunately, an airline check-in cast member noticed my distress and took us to the front of the line. So we got our luggage checked and we made our bus.

It's nothing against the resort itself. CBR is beautiful! The high priced, low quality food (which we expected) and the bus system (which was worse than we expected) just put me off to staying on-site again. Extra Magic Hours and Magical Express alone just aren't worth justified the higher cost of staying on-site.

I'm more than willing to give Disney my money; I'm just not willing to let Disney waste my time waiting in a ridiculously long line for a bus at the end of a long day or not picking me up when I have a scheduled time and I need to make a certain bus. We'll be back to WDW, but we'll be staying somewhere other than a Disney resort.

Anyway - this thread was a great source of information about CBR and I thank all of you who take the time to answer questions to make another family's vacation go a little more smoothly!

We'll be staying at CBR 12/18-12/21...looking for ideas to have a quick & easy breakfast in our room. Does anyone have any ideas and tips on what you have done?

I have to agree with the previous posters. Garden grocer is great, when you don't drive because they will deliver to your hotel.

We got a cab and went to Walmart and got fruit, milk , cereal, yogurts, Water for the parks. String cheese, beer and Wine and Snacks like pretzels and Chips.

We also bought disposable bowls and cutlery.

This time we are driving so I will be able to bring it all with me!
Including my favorite brand of bottled water that I can't seem to find anywhere in thee south? Poland Springs.

and if anyone knows where I can get it down there I am all ears. Because I really don't want to lug 2 weeks worth down with me from MA....lol

don't you have to go to the custom house, regardless? For DME? If we have to head that way anyway, there is no benefit to hitting OPR first..

To catch the DME bus, yes you have to go to Custom House.

Otherwise, no. Once we check in at Custom House, we never go back.

We normally rent a car. We use a credit card for room charges; the invoice is left on the door morning of check out.

We used the concierge desk at OPR to print our SW boarding passes.

I think we are for sure going to stay here for our trip with the kiddos in 2011. This is a long thread, so sorry if this has been asked before, but is it possible to get connecting rooms where one room is a king and one room is 2 doubles?

Having stayed in two of these combos and having seen another one, I can say; yes these combo's are available.

However you do run the risk (maybe all of them are? :confused3 Don't know, the combo's I've seen all were) of the room with the king bed being a handicapped accessible room. If it's in a configuration with a roll in shower that would mean no seperate sink area from the bathroom area, but one big bathroom with no tub but a big shower with a fold down seat.

Some folks are about dead set in wanting to avoid these rooms, so if this is of influence for you, you might want to take this into consideration before requesting such a combo.

Thanks for the quick answer. Our DDs will be 7, 11 and 12 then and DH and I will have the king room, so having the tub doesn't matter to us. Thanks!

Smi727, just wanted to say I'm sorry you had a less than stellar stay at CBR.

A room request is just that -- a request. There are no guarantees about room assignment. Glad they made it right by you.

As for buses, luggage pickup, etc., I'm sorry it was a bad experience. I'm amazed at how each trip can be a completely different experience. My first stay at CBR was a good stay. Not great, but good. My last trip was fantastic! I think time of year, room assignment, etc. play a huge part in whether it goes well or not.

Hope you might give CBR another chance in the future.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us. :goodvibes

Well, we are beginning to work on our upcoming trip in Aug. 2010 and DH has said we should switch it to CBR since I was so miserable at POFQ. So, I'm calling to see if I can switch and still keep my free dining in Aug. Hopefully, I don't lose that.

We just got back from CBR on Sunday and I have to agree with a previous poster (smi727) that the buses were absolutely HORRIBLE. It didn't seem to matter what park we were trying to get to- there were always at least 3 buses for each of the other parks that came before the one we wanted. Leaving the parks was horrible, too, and it didn't seem to matter when we left the parks. Even if all of the other resort bus lines were empty, there was always a line of people waiting for CBR because there were that few CBR buses. DH and I felt bad because it was the first time my mom had stayed on site (my dad has stayed on-site numerous times but always at deluxes for work, so he never had to deal with the "public" buses) and right off the bat, she was frusturated with the buses. We tried to assure her/them that it wasn't always so bad but it definitely didn't improve over the week. We won't stay at CBR again because of the buses.

We enjoyed the rest of the resort. We were in adjoining rooms in Jamaica 43 (4311 and 4312, which was a corner room) overlooking the quiet pool. It was a nice walk to Port Royale. The Jamaica bus stop was really convenient and never seemed to be the last stop on the pick-up route, which was good given how few buses there were- I know we were on buses that skipped other stops because we were full. The food court was okay, nothing spectacular but it's a food court. I liked the shop. The main pool was fun but it was a bit chilly when we went. Hint: there's a second hot tub behind the big water slide that tends to be less crowded than the one closer to the pool.

To sum it up: liked the resort itself but will never stay again because of the horrible bus situation. In the future, I think our moderate of choice will be CSR.

This sounds more like simple bad luck, rather than proof that buses at CBR are horrible. Had you happened, by luck, to make a different park choice each day, you would have thought the buses at CBR were the best thing ever.

I wouldn't be saying this if you reported something like "There were NO buses at all for 30 minutes at a time," but since there were lots and lots of buses every day but just not the ONE for your park each day, you gotta just chalk it up to bad luck. I hope you can understand what I'm saying ... someone staying at CBR at the same time as you, but who went to a different park than you each day, THOSE people had GREAT bus service all week, know what I mean??? :goodvibes

My fiancee send me the link to these forums and I've been reading all night!

We'll be staying in CBR in May for our honeymoon, our last trip in '02 we stayed at either All Star Movies or Music. (can't remember!)

Had a blast in '02 (it was my first WDW trip, his fourth), really looking forward to this one!

There's some great advice and tips here!

How about waiting over 30 minutes for a bus to show up at a park? Because that happened on more than one occassion. As I said before, there were many times that all of the other resort lines were empty/almost empty and there were buses for them pulling away empty while there was a line waiting for CBR.

Normally I would agree with the bad luck as far as waiting for a bus to a specific park but when multiple buses to multiple parks were coming one after another and no one was getting on because the one bus that everyone wanted hadn't shown in the 25-30 minutes that some of us had been waiting- that's ridiculous. And it happened on more than one day. What was also ridiculous was the number of Downtown Disney buses that were running at 8 am! Seriously, we counted 3 in a 5 minute period one morning (while we waited 1/2 hr for the park we wanted). Why on earth do they need that many DTD buses at 8 am? Whoever is in charge of bus schedules at CBR really needs to actually come out to the bus stops and figure out what buses people actually need and when.

As I said, overall we liked CBR but next time it's either CSR or a deluxe that has other transportaion options besides bus.

This was true for us as well for our trip over Halloween. The CBR stop would be very crowded, and the buses would be destined to take guests to other resorts.

We also saw many DTD buses early in the morning, one Magic Kingdom bus didn't even come to our bus stop. We waited for thirty minutes for a Magic Kingdom Bus one morning. I don't usually watch the clock but we had an ADR to get to. We waited from 7:33 until 7:55 I had to ask another bus driver why we had been waiting so long.

I just want to say a couple of things. One, the resort has nothing to do with schedualing buses, it's done by bus people and someone there wasn't doing the job right. And also the average time between buses is 20 minutes, so ones that came sooner were either off route schedule or something was going on like EMH so they had more buses for that park.
I have only stayed at Pop and some days it's just not the greatest, while others are great. For me DTD is the worse. I waited over 1/2 hour to get a bus there and at least that long to catch one back as well. I think in the future if we rent a car (which we usually do) we will just drive it to DTD, becuase we waste alot of travel time to and from there. 2 years ago, I saw the Pop bus pulling away and had to wait 45 minutes, and then as soon as we were pulling out anothr Pop bus was pulling in...go figure.

I am a huge poland springs fan too. I can't stand the aftertaste of the Nestle and Evian waters. Didn't find poland springs anywhere but the last time we were down there we picked up the zephyrhills water and it was actually pretty good.
