I've been anxiously awaiting my energy bill since it's been so cold here in PA and we are new to this house. Anyway, I called PECO and it's $261 for gas and electric, which I didn't think was too bad (not sure how many days that includes yet). But, we keep the house at 60F--which is a bit on the chilly side.

I've been slowly finding and insulating cold spots to help keep the house warmer, such as insulating the basement windows. I'm also going to look into using the wood burning fireplace, but have to get that professionally cleaned first since it hasn't been used in 20 years.

Just wondering if anyone else wanted to share their energy bills and/or tips for keeping it lower--especially during the winter. Im a bit of an energy-saving junky. I had our old house running really efficiently, but this house is bigger and I cant seem to match that amount, no matter how many changes I try.

Edit: My house is about 2900sf, 55-60 years old, and we are a family of five. (Old house was 1800sf, 15 years old, and had great southern sun exposure.)

$200 for gas and electric in Central VA. House is 19 years old and 2,200 square feet. I keep the thermostat at 65 in the winter.

We are in PA also. My bill I pad this week was $350. Our home is about 4300 sq ft. We have electric everything!

This thread is probably more for those who live on the East Coast. I used to live in NJ, 14 years ago, and live in Central California now. It doesn't get nearly as cold here but our PG&E bill(s) are high. On average, it runs in the high $200's and has easily gone over $300. We do not have a large home, it's a ranch (about 1500 square feet).

My bill was over $100 more this month than last month due to the super cold temps. Bummer!

Wow that is cheap! I stay on the budget plan year round- I pay 300 for heat,180 electric and 20 gas a month.

Our bill came today and the meter was read on 1-11-14 & was just $30 more. Though it was cold, our house has good insulation.

I think my winter heating bills.....in California......in an apartment......in 1982 were close to $100.
We had a stretch of 27 degree weather here last month, electric bill (all electric house) $279, but we keep the house at 62 at night and during the day, and heat it to 68 in the afternoon until bedtime.

We installed a pretty woodstove in our living room two winters ago. I was resistant at the time, but have to say, I am loving it!! It's been in the mid to high 70s in here. Have not filled the oil tank since August!

All electric home, heating (for many days of record cold), Christmas lights, extra cooking and hot water for all 4 kids home added up to $100 more than previous month. 2100 square ft 10 year-old home in the South.

Southeastern PA. 9 year old 3000 sq ft carriage home plus unfinished basement (end unit) . Gas furnace. $369 for gas and electric. Multizone heat, second floor set at 62, main floor at 66. This was $150 more than previous month.

Well, this is depressing....in California, 2000sf home, kept @ 68 (plus or minus 2 degrees) and our bill was $350. Good grief CA is just ridiculously expensive across the board. :(

Here in CO, it wasn't quite the deep freeze that the east had but we did set some records of our own. Our bill which included family here for a solid week, Christmas lights going inside and out, daytime thermostat on 67 and nighttime on 65 came to $243. That is actually the highest bill we've ever had but we moved 6 mos ago and bought a bigger house. The house is just shy of 4000sq ft including the finished basement. So I am kind of unsure what a normal winter bill looks like though the bill before was $180. This includes gas and electric.

I have a 1200 sq ft condo run on propane. My heating bill was $131, which I was pleased with. I kept the house at 62 while I was there and 55 at night/while I was out. I was pretty happy with that.

Similar area - $450 a month budget plan (switched to the budget plan after getting a $1200 bill one month).. Small 100 year old home.

Could be worse - you could be in NJ! At least you have good weather!

We're on the budget plan so I won't see any difference until our plan resets, which it does once a year, but since the new price will still be an average, the impact of a few weeks of cold weather is minimal.

I'm amazed at how much people pay! We have a 3000 square ft home built in 1939, all electric except for one gas fireplace, and our electric + gas runs $150 average. This month it was $210 but will go under $100 in April/May.

I'm in Va and it got down to 8 degrees here. We keep our thermostat at 65. Maybe because we have a brick house? Or plaster walls? Idk!

Our home is 3,000 square feet and is 8 years old. We have two heat pumps and our electric bill was $277.42. (Total utility bill was $375 - almost $100 was for water, sewer and trash pick up). We also use gas logs in the evening when it is really cold and our gas bill for the month was $60. The upstairs and downstairs thermostats usually stay on 70.
