Care to share your energy bill from the deep freeze?

In ga, 53 for gas, 75 for electric. We haven't gotten bills for when the temps were in the 20s. We have a second floor 900 square foot apartment.

Edit: forgot to add: we keep the house at 65-70 ( we bump it up to 70 when outside is lower then 50)

In the Great Lakes region of Canada. 3000 sq ft. My gas is equal billing and about $65 a month, every month of the year. Usually I end up with a small credit, so I imagine the credit will be eaten by the cold temps this year. I do know during the deep freeze I hardly ever heard the furnace shut off. It just ran and ran.
Hydro is another story. We have different rates for different times of day. I do all my laundry, run the dishwasher etc very early in the morning or after 7 at night to get the cheapest rates. They are very high during the day. We are careful about lights, our dryer is gas, we unplug what we can etc. And it's averaging about $180-$200 a month.:headache:. Makes me so mad.
Water is about $150 every three months.

We don't spread our billing out over the year so

1850 SF house
heat pump so electric does help with heat

electric bill $75
gas bill $79 (in the summer it's $15-just hot water)

I thought it was going to be much worse.

We paid $250 combined gas & electric for a warm house.

Normal would be 200.

5 YO / 3800 sq ft ~ first 2 floors are gas fueled in floor radiant kept at 70 for toasty warm feet. This is the only house I have ever lived in that you cant tell what its like outside by how it feels inside, if anything the house feels warmer as the temp outside drops. This is because the floor temp does increase to keep up with the heat loss :thumbsup2.

Top floor has forced warm air done with a geothermal heatpump, don't want the radiant in the bedrooms as it take to long to set back at night then warm back up in the morning. But the bathrooms on the top floor have heated floors and towel warmers :).

Can't imagine walking around in the house bundled up, I hate putting on shoes or even pants!:hyper:

Oh, and as far as costs: We have about 1400 sq, need new windows (it's on the agenda, but not quite yet) and we keep the house at 68 in the winter and 70-72 in the summer. We pay $150/month for gas and $150/month for electric on the budget plan (so year round, so we don't see bumps in the electric for the AC or bumps in the gas for heat).

When DD was in high school, DH put it down to 65 during the day in the winter but now that her schedule is varied (she works part time and goes to community college par time) it's at 68 around the clock, so it's possible we'll see a bit of a bump, but probably not much.

We're in a budget plan for our gas service, it's a set $103 per month. It may jump a few dollars each month for a few months but it shouldn't be that much more different.

Electric is always around $60-$70 per month.

OO

Unless that fireplace draws air directly from the outside and not enclosed it's going to cost you more. 90% of the heat from the fireplace will go up the chimney along with heat from the furnace.

Have a relative who did this and when he got his gas bill his reaction was

:scared1::scared1::scared1:

I live in a town home with really high ceilings (about 1500sq ft). In the summer my bill is between $240-$260. Nov.-Apr.-ish is usually closer to $120-$150 as I refuse to turn on my heat lol. I pay too much in the summer and refuse to get hit on both ends haha. I have blankets and I think my dog loves it!

I have electric everything so no gas bill

I'm also amazed at what some of you are paying and I sincerely sympathize! Up here (Montreal suburb), we pay around 210$ a month on a budget plan for an all-electric house (1965 split-level, don't know the sq ft but it's got 3 bd and a finished basement) with a thermopump that also provides a/c in the summer and that we use a LOT! We pretty much keep it at 72F year-long. We don't have water/trash/sewage bills but we do pay for this in our annual property tax bill. I guess we're lucky we live in the province that provides a lot of electricity (and that sells it) so we get it at a discount. And it costs the same, whatever the time of day. Yes, we are definitely lucky!

You guys were really scaring me! I had to go look mine up! (It's on autopay and I don't pay much attention to it) I keep my house much warmer than most of you. We may go down to 68 at night, but 70 is more typical. Daytime 72 - 74.

My gas bill thru Dec 6 was $85
My gas bill thru Jan 6 was $130

So, there are a few freezing days not billed yet, but I don't think it's going to be up much more from the last one.

House is about 2600 SF, if you count the basement it's about 4,000 SF. Chicago area.

We live in Milwaukee and have had quite a few cold days here. We keep our thermostat at 68 degrees during the day and 65 at night. Just got our December bill and it was $230! :faint: We usually average about $150 a month, maybe a tad more if it's really cold out. Our house is about 900 sq ft and we have the heat turned off in the finished basement part since we aren't using it often. Windows are sealed as well. I am not looking forward to January's bill with this cold snap two weeks ago. -55 degrees with the windchill was not playing nice with my furnace!

I've been anxiously awaiting my energy bill since it's been so cold here in PA and we are new to this house. Anyway, I called PECO and it's $261 for gas and electric, which I didn't think was too bad (not sure how many days that includes yet). But, we keep the house at 60F--which is a bit on the chilly side.

I've been slowly finding and insulating cold spots to help keep the house warmer, such as insulating the basement windows. I'm also going to look into using the wood burning fireplace, but have to get that professionally cleaned first since it hasn't been used in 20 years.

Just wondering if anyone else wanted to share their energy bills and/or tips for keeping it lower--especially during the winter. Im a bit of an energy-saving junky. I had our old house running really efficiently, but this house is bigger and I cant seem to match that amount, no matter how many changes I try.

Edit: My house is about 2900sf, 55-60 years old, and we are a family of five. (Old house was 1800sf, 15 years old, and had great southern sun exposure.)

CT 2000sf house. I just got both my gas and electric bills this week. Our electric bill was $165, about $15 higher than normal (not surprising with Christmas in the billing period). Our gas bill was $202, about the average for the bill this time of year. We keep our house set at about 60 degrees most of the time, if DH is home alone he turns it down to 55, and if I'm home without him here, I turn it up to 65. :lmao:

Ugh.... When I moved to montana from so California I was under the impression the cost of living was lower (to match the wages). No so... We pay about 200 for electric and about 175 for gas for a 3600sqft home with a wood stove, that actually cut our cost from $400 electric during winter.

I just paid $200 for a small 2 bed 1 bath apartment we keep it at about 70 degrees

1000 square foot apartment in Orlando runs about 85-95 throughout the year for one person in a one bedroom. The highest it went was $99 during the peak of summer. I keep the house cold. I hate "stale" air. There has to be some sort of fresh moving air.. Either by air conditioning or fan. Horrible that I am like this... But it's always been that way. Also my windows are directly facing trees so unless I want squirrels and bugs.. No opening the windows. So my air is a bit higher than what the comparable apartment but not enough to kill me. My water, sewer and electricity are about 15 bucks a month.

My house (950 sq ft) is 100% electric. I should be getting a bill any day now but last month's bill was $70 higher than the same period last year. I'm shuddering at how high this month's bill will be. Last month's was $250. Thank goodness I'm on the budget plan ($162 a month) or these winter electric bills would kill me!

Same here. We went from a $400/month mortgage in WV to $1200 a month rent for an apartment, which seems to be about the going rate in this area. Holy cow it took a bit of getting used to.

Split Foyer about 2,000 sq ft. Electric bill this month $299.70 - about $100 above normal. Our thermostat is set on 67 degrees.

Wow. I'm never going to complain about my gas or electric bill again. We're getting a bargain here in Buffalo of all places.

Gas I'm budgeted @ $108 a month. The heat is set @ 70 and it's pretty much left there. My heat is usually on from November till March. Maybe a few extra days into April. I don't have central air.

Electric usually runs anywhere from $90-$120. I don't consider that to bad considering we are running 4 TVs and a combo of computers and plugged in iPads, cell phones and lap tops.

We jumped from averaging 150-175 in the last few months for gas and electricity to 303.00 for this last month. Ouch. I budget in our personal budget 250.00 so not too far off my budget but I dont like it!

1685 ft tri level.
