I live north of you. My last gas bill was $200 (electric $100). This month I fear what it will be, with temps down to -12 (-41 wind chill). My next meter reading is on the 23rd. I used an electric space heater to help keep one room warm and did lots of baking during the deep freeze to keep the kitchen warm. Our house is 100 years old and about 1,500 sq. ft.

I put insulation strips around the doors, covered the windows with plastic and keep our heat set at 64F all the time.

Oh my! If we ever had an electric bill less than $400 I would faint! We live in SE Texas so freezing isn't even that common. Our house is 9 years old.

I am from TX and all my family still lives there. Texas has pretty high electric rates. It's nothing for my aunt who lives outside Houston in a 1400 sqft ranch to have $350 bills even though it doesn't get that cold. And my family in Dallas...their bills have been $600 in the winter before.

Haven't gotten the bill for the polar vortex but my last gas bill was $191.00 and my electric was 90.00 bucks. The increase in electric also probably had the Christmas lights on it.

I have a 3200 square foot home in SJ and unfortunately I love it toasty. 72 during the day 68 at night.

I'm in the Greater Boston area. 14 room house built in 1891. About 5 years ago we had 33 windows replaced and insulation and siding put on the house.
DH keeps the house at 64 during the day (he's a SAHD) and 50(!) at night. DD and I often get up and raise the temp. I like it cool for sleeping but not cold. We are on oil heat, the budget plan, at $300 a month, year 'round. Our electric bill is also around $300 (all electric kitchen and laundry) and natural gas for the HW heater is about $50. I can't imagine what people pay who keep their homes at 75+ degrees (I know some of them!)

So, you pay $300 for oil heat, $300 for electric and then $50 for natural gas? Every month??

This year, so far. It makes me crazy!!! And every month I ask DH how our bills could be so high. He's the only one home from 7-3. Part of it is living in Taxachusetts. If we weren't on the budget plan it would be $600/month for oil from October 1 to April 1. After that, the furnace is turned off. I have to think that the high electricity usage comes from the dryer. I hang everything to dry except towels, sheets, undies and socks. However, DD17 does her own laundry and stuffs everything into the dryer. We do laundry every day so even if we saved it for the weekend, we would do just as many loads. I work full-time so only use the stove and oven for a maximum of an hour a day...tend to use my crockpot which is low energy. I do run around turning out lights and turning off electronics via power strips but since I am the first to bed, I often get up in the middle of the night to find half the lights on. We looked into energy audits but it seems they are only for those considering the switch to natural gas.

What the..? Y'all pay HOW much??

I thought we were messing up BIG time with a $120 gas bill! (It doesn't usually get that high until January for us but the first week of Dec we had temps under 20 for a week). The month prior was only $55 - we live in Oregon and keep it at 68 when we are home, 63 when we are out (we have pets).

I guess around here water/sewage is the issue....$250 or so every three months. :sad2:

Wow, I feel bad for people having to pay these kinds of bills just for utilities. You can only cut so much and it sounds like you are doing a lot to conserve already.

I guess every area of the country has something. We pay $75 every three months for trash/recycling, water runs about $30 a month, and sewer is $135 every three months with fairly minimal usage. In SE PA, I heard we are more heat dependent than AC dependent, and I'm glad we have the ability to choose our energy suppliers. Thanks to everyone for sharing!

Well, this is depressing....in California, 2000sf home, kept @ 68 (plus or minus 2 degrees) and our bill was $350. Good grief CA is just ridiculously expensive across the board. :(

You aren't kidding. We just moved into a little bit bigger home so I have to wait and see what our bill is like. Wonder what our water bill will be since we are in a drought. That is a whole different thread.

Our upstairs is electric baseboard heaters, so my electric bill is always high in winter. But last week I had furnace (boiler/radiator) set on 71 and it was still chilly. We have newer windows but my door lets in a awful cool draft. Getting it fixed ASAP ...my house is also old maybe 70-80 yrs and about the same some 1400-1500 sq fr

Ours sort of leveled itself out - running the heat overtime through that miserable cold erased the savings we'd have seen from being gone for a week with the heat on 60° and nothing powered on, but didn't give us a shockingly high bill.

Out here in Montana, 15 y/o 2500 sqft home kept at 68 degrees, electric bill budget plan is $155 a month. Hasn't changed much, we don't have A/C to use in the summer. Propane is our heat source, and it averages $170 per month if we bulk buy in the summer at the $1.69/gallon rate. First winter here, we had no idea we could do that, and were paying $300+ per month for propane to heat the house. Yikes! Every time the furnace would kick on, we'd look at each other and say, "there goes our money!" - we're looking forward to replacing furnace with a more energy efficient one this summer. Would kill for the natural gas we used to heat with back on the east coast so cheaply.

Stay warm, everyone!

Eastern Missouri, haven't gotten the bill yet for the -15 days. But, our most recent electric bill was $212. 1,500 square foot built in 2000, all electric. We keep it 65-68 in Winter.

Our gas bill isnt in yet. We have 1400sqft on Lake Erie. -30 degree windchill for 3 days, during which the furnace didnt want to shut off..
Im thinkin mid $200's for gas. We dont go crazy on electric, so maybe $120.
