How do you prepare a car seat for check in. I don't want to take it as carryon because I'll have my hands full with my carryon and 3 grandkids.

Should I try to find a box big enough or can I just place it in a plastic bag?

Thanks in advance.

I purchased back packs made for car booster seats on Amazon for about $15 each. I have two of them - one for each seat and have taken them on many trips. Both have been very durable and not ben damaged and I check mine with luggage. Very easy to check boosters in backpacks especially considering I travel with 2 small children, 3 suitcases, 2 car seats and a double stroller. My husband and I each put one back pack on and it keeps hands free for other gear.

Before I purchased the backpacks, I got contractor garbage bags from Costco (their on brand). They are large and very, very thick and durable. Put each seat in two bags (ie double bag). Tie knot at top and incorporate luggage tag in knot. If you gate check your seats or check with luggage, car seats are usually x-rayed by TSA.

Hope it helps!

My daughters own car seat bags. I think from walmart $19. They are great. They have a handle and a place for your luggage ID tags. We did have one with wheels on it once, but the wheels broke off on the first trip and we returned it. I think you can use a big plastic bag, but you have to be able to attach (or stick) your information on it (it has to have your name/address on it).

I recommend buying one of those carseat bags/backpacks and then reinforcing the seams with duck tape and using that!

How old is the child that will be using the carseat and will they have a seat on the plane?

I had carseat, stroller, 2 backpacks and 2 kids for our last flight and while its challenging, its doable and was totally worth it to be able to strap one kiddo down for the trip!!!

I have one of these. They work great. I can strap it on my back and leave my hands free to push DD in her stroller, at least that's what I've done in the past. Hook diaper bag and purse onto stroller handles and I'm good to go.

Keeps it clean too. We are on our second one now, they do get some wear and tear, but hey better to buy a new bag than have to buy a new car seat!

We don't check our carseat because we use it on the airplane, so we have this:

It is a little bit expensive, but very durable and very useful. Went to visit my sister in June and left her stroller home (I went without DH). Basically, it turns the carseat into a stroller. I put DD in it and wheeled her to the gate.

It is worth the money, but I understand if this is the only trip that this will be an issue for you that you wouldn't want to make the investment. I fly a couple times a year with DD and she'll be in a carseat for a while, so it makes sense (and enables me to fly without another adult).

We put our car seats in rip-stop nylon laundry bags... We still use the laundry bags... 10 years later. We also were happy to have laundry bags with us while traveling.
