Thanks everyone, we were looking into the driver under 25 purely because she lives/works in the US (has been there for over a year, but UK citizen), hence the international permit so has experience of driving there so to speak. I think the two drivers wanted to split the duties because one of them is a little less confident when it comes to strange places/roads.

Will have a look at the recommended sites and see what quotes come back!

i have a quote from alamo for a car we are looking at mid suv /ford escape dates r 28th aug to 12th sept and i have been quoted £348.21 for a fully inclusive package


this sounds a good price to me and less than i had expected, will this be a total price to pay or will there be taxes local fees on collection

Or wait for an offer, they have been quite frequent in 2012, my next rental is 14 nights, 7 seater SUV (at least 2 sizes bigger than you are looking for) fully inclusive for £239, thats with Hertz.

In all the years I have been reading forums I have never seen anyone say an IDP is required or even possibly required.
You learn something every day.

RAC says:
USA

An International Driving Permit is not a legal requirement but is recommended.

Is it they recommend because they are selling them

If its not a legal requirement I will carry on as before.

I am with you Wayne - not paying for something I don't need!

From the Embassy website:

The U.S.A. has an agreement with most countries whereby the renter's full national driving license may be used for a period of up to one year in the U.S.A. This applies to the full U.K. driving license. Provisional licenses are not acceptable.

I only recommend companies that are all inclusive. Most UK agents include everything you need.
Sometimes its cheaper to book with the free extra driver even if you don't need it.
I wasn't sure about taking the 7 seater for April, there are only 3 of us. It will cost more in gas but at the price I couldn't resist.

The 7 seat mini vans we have had last twice have been as economical as an intermediate SUV.
