Capt. Jack's Wenches (&swabbies) lose the weight for 8/08 Getting our Magic back!

www.cookinglight.com

I'm a total foodie. I love to cook. I read cookbooks like novels. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Cooking Light, books, magazines, web site. No one would ever know the food is light if you don't tell them.

Great idea, thanks! He's off at a conference for the rest of the week, and then to his Reserve duty - so I won't be able to address it with him until next week. Probably Tuesday since he's pretty wiped on Mondays after driving all the way home from Vandenburg.

About Stevia... I remember reading that, while it's a no-calorie sweetner it can cause the same insulin reaction as sugar. That's bad for weight loss - and worse for diabetics. Be sure to read up on it. I got the impression - only skimmed the intrduction - that other no-calorie sweetners might be as problematic.

BTW. It's an herb you can grow in your garden, harvest the leaves, dry, and make your own. I grew it last year - didn't harvest, was just curious about it. The leaves really are sweet right off the plant. Very easy to grow. Keep it pruned down to prevent it from getting tall and leggy.

Big virutal hugs to all of us... :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:
I'm so glad we're doing this. I might actually be successful.

Absolutely you should read about any product before you sample it. That's why I stated in my post that there is a lot of information on the internet. I'm not a doctor and I'm certainly not backing the product. I was just asked if there were any new products to share & I thought Stevia was worth mentioning if you're like me and looking for an alternative to Nutrasweet or Splenda & you have to have a something in your coffee or tea like I do. I'm sure there are many other sweetners worth trying out there. As far as growing it, I do not have a green thumb so that would be out of the question for me, but thanks for the suggestion. :thumbsup2

Hope everyone is doing well! Hang in there! :grouphug:

I read about agave cactus sweetener. It comes like honey and has slow release inthe bloodstream so it's good for diabetics. But since I only use my Splenda in the am for my 1 cup of joe, I'll stick with it.
My daughter has to put her my granddaughter on a special diet and keep her on it for around a month. She has been on meds since birth due to medical condition and is very prone to utis. Seems all the meds caused a really bad imbalance in her body and they ran a bloodtest and found she has all sorts of issues. So they want her to eliminate, sugars, dairy, gluten and flour,I think. So now I have to find some recipes for her as I watch them after school 2x a week and I am tired of the fast food they have been eating all their lives. Hopefully this will be a good thing for the family as a whole.Get everyone to adopt good eating habits.Well we can hope.

They served Turkey and stuffing today at work. I had the stuffing but passed on the mashed potatoes. Tomorrow I have to be strong and not cave in to eating out!

I finally bought myself a new scale and weighed myself this morning. It seems I might have LOST weight on the cruise last week. I find that really hard to believe. I'll have to weigh myself at the gym today to get a more accurate comparison. I was 160 pre-cruise. My scale says I'm currently 156. Hmm, using stairs and watching what I ate (sometimes) seems to have helped!

Who says you have to gain on a cruise?!!??

WELL DONE!

At lunch today, I put a Rice Krispie Treat on my tray - thought of you guys and put it back. Thanks for helping!!! :) :) :)

Kim - Total congrats on your weight loss on the cruise......:thumbsup2

About Stevia - yes, do all the research and decide if this is for you. I have been using Stevia for about 3 years now. I read up on it before hand. It does not raise your blood sugar. Right now, it falls under the "supplements" catagory. But, the most interesting fact I found while doing my research on the product was the millions of $$$$ that the artificial sweetners' (Sweet 'n Low/Splenda) paid to lobbyist to try to keep this product off the market. The FDA went along with this (for a while), and under threat of lawsuit caved in and classified it as a dietary supplement.

The problem I have had with Stevia is that it is so concentrated I have trouble with the proper portion. They need to make a more accurate measuring guidlines - IMHO. I keep trying though.

Another website I have found that has been a WONDERFUL reference is: hungry-girl.com. If you go to "chew the right thing:, it gives LF/Low Cal recipe alternatives to some of our favorite dishes.

And adding some PD :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: and Prayers to Kristina for a speedy recovery from her surgery today.

You all asked for it and here it is. My name is Becky and I'm a carb-a-holic, but I am bound and determined to lose 75lbs by our cruise. Gonna get my magic back!

Finally found this thread- thanks to a fellow wench on our cruise thread!

Hi, I'm Shelley, better known as bbb and I'm also a carb-a-holic. I plan on starting Atkins again because I'm bound and determined to lose the same 80lbs again!
Yes, you heard right. Back in 2003 I lost 80lbs on Atkins and then ever so slowly gained it back... it snuck up on me throughout the years. Once I got off Atkins (after surgery) I stayed completely off plan and for me that means pretty much anything high carb- I adore... and eat...

I have started by cutting out sodas and back to drinking water- primarily because all I was drinking was LESS THAN 20oz of soda per day and that's it! Talk about major dehydration... I tend to do that (did that before I ever started Atkins years ago too). So for 2 days now I've drank water but haven't exactly ate low carb diet. I have avoided chocolate somehow though... for 2 days.. which is saying a lot for me! (especially because I wasn't even doing it intentionally, I just realized it!)

Apparently the weight I'm at is the weight my body "likes" because it's the EXACT weight I was before starting Atkins last time- and back then, same as now, I apparently can eat whatever I want and stay the same weight. But it's WAY heavier than I need or want to be. I wish the weight my body "liked" was much much lower. Ah to dream a dream... to be like one of those people that can never gain weight (like my dad). It would be so great!

Anyway, I'm here and hope to get totally on the "wagon" soon. :)

Shelley, DH is doing Atkins. Your story sounds very much like his. He was drinking 2 LTR bottle of reg soda everynight when he came home from work, and he's a diabetic (weight related) :scared1: . Of course, when he started Atkins the soda had to go. He has switched to Peach Tea Crystal Light. The one positive effect of cutting out the soda is his sleep apnea seemed to improve drastically :confused3 . I think he was consuming so much sugar before bedtime he never really went into a full sleep (REM?).

Since being on the Atkins, his blood sugar levels have returned to almost normal without his meds, although Dr told him to stay on them.

Morning everyone!

I did my normal Friday weigh-in this morning and am happy to report I'm down 2.5 lbs - from 176 to 173.5 - I'm fitting comfortably into a 12 (no digging in or muffin top over the pants). My goal is to get into an 8 - only two sizes away:cool1: !

Keep up the good work everyone - remember, one day at a time!

I haven't been an 8 since my DD was born. I would love to be able to fit a comfortable 12 right now. everything has spread and I have that belly. I'm trying to follow a few diets. I have the You on a diet book and it makes sense. Just have to cut out a few more carbs. and bring the walking up to 1/2 hour each day. Today my lower back strted to ache a bit and had to cut it short. My goal is to get to a point where I can walk 15 min out and the back. Right now because of the back I just walk aroung the block a few times. I'm afraid to get too far from the house incase it seizes up on me. This whole back thing came to a head when we took the kids to Universal. I had no idea there was soooo much walking. Before we even got to the entrance to the park I knew I was in trouble.I will never go there again.Just the walk thru citywalk was exhausting. So I learned my lesson the hard way. I don't get on the scale. I have a drs appt the 22nd and that will be my weighin:eek:

Hello fellow wenches & swabbies (are there any swabbies here?)!

My name is Pamela. I am 42, 5'3", 160 lbs and I just plain enjoy food! Chocolate is good, carbs are good, fruit & veggies are good, and so on ...

I was skinny and somewhat underweight until my mid-twenties. Then I gained a bit, maybe 10 pounds overweight which I lost for my wedding (1989) My DH is a good cook and my weight slowly crept up and I was probably about 15 lbs overweight before DS7 was born. I gained almost no weight other than the baby (gained about 12 lbs and he weighed about 9 when born) which worried the doctors, but didn't seem to cause any problems. The real weight gain came right after he was born. After 24 hours of labor, he was born by emergency c-section. Then they found he had been "breathing" meconium (sp? - his own poop) for quite some time and had an infection. He stayed in the Neonate ICU for a week. I was sent home after 3 days without him. I've never known exactly why, but I was totally wiped out from the surgery and was under orders to not go up/down stairs, not lift anything, not walk any more than inside my house, etc. Even after DS finally came home, I still wasn't allowed to do anything. Finally, 4 weeks later I was allowed to go out for "short" walks around my yard and then around the block. During those 4 weeks of forced inactivity I was bored out of my mind and ate continuously. I topped out at around 180 lbs and started trying to lose it. For the first 3 years, it didn't seem to matter WHAT I did, I couldn't lose anything - excersize, 1000 calories a day, nothing worked. It was very frustrating and I didn't always stick with it (eating more didn't cause me to gain either - I was just stuck!) but when DS turned 3, I finally started to VERY slowly lose weight. I am averaging about 5 lbs off per year which is insanely slow, but at least it is the right direction. I have dropped from size 16 right after he was born to size 12 right now.

In a typical day I have a slim-fast "shake" for breakfast, about 300 calories for lunch and a "normal" dinner. I have found I actually handle sugar/chocolate cravings better if I allow myself a little treat each day. So I'll have one dessert like thing. If I try to skip the sweets completely, usually after a couple weeks I'll just go nuts and seriously OD - like make a batch of chocolate chip cookie dough and eat the whole thing! I get to the gym at least once a week and try to do little things, like park farther out in the parking lot so I walk a little further. In the summer, I go for walks and garden, but that just doesn't work for me in the winter. It is 8* today and the sidewalks are all covered in snow and ice!

So anyway, I'm right with you trying to lose weight! I would love to lose 20 lbs by the cruise, but am trying not to get my hopes too high - past experience says that I will only lost 7 or 8 lbs in 18 months! I just keep trying to tell myself that it is better than nothing or gaining... My doctor told me that at least losing it this slowly, I have a really good chance of keeping it off!:woohoo:

Hey all! I am Coral, 41, 5'4 and I am not sure about the weight since my scale is possessed but I am a size 14/16. I can't believe I admitted that since I refuse to believe myself.
I have always had a nice figure. Not skinny, but not overweight. Over the last 15 years my weight has crept up ( and up and up...). I still have the hardest time believing I am the size I am.
This summer there were 31 of my family members that went on an Alaskan cruise together. I realzed that if my luggage got lost there is not any remote way I could fit in anyone else's clothes as I am by far the largest person in my entire family.
I have nothing to blame except age and my refusal to admit I am not going to be able to eat the way I have my whole life anymore. For some reason I seem to be stuck on that concept.
I am going to start by making moderate changes to get used to that and add more and more changes as I get them absorbed in my brain.
I, ideally would like to lose 40 pounds by the cruise but not sure if that is going to happen.
My size 4, always been small mother called me the other day to ask how many more months untill our cruise (they are coming w/us). I told her about 18 months and she tells me "you can lose 4 pounds a month until then".
She knows I am unhappy but she has never been over an 8 her whole life.
Looking forward to our own little "get healthy" thread!

I always try to remember, I did not gain this weight overnight and I will certainly not loose it that way. 1 -2 lbs a week is great progress for me.

Unfortunately, weighing today, I gained 2#. I am PMS'ing to the tenth power so I am really not surprised. Tomorrow is another day.

That's a great attitude to have MaryAnn!

I made the 1st step this morning. I replaced the 2 boxes of Girl Scout cookies I had on my desk with a bag of baby carrots. In the interest of full disclosure, I also have a container of LIGHT Ranch Veggie dip beside them. Last week I drowned the carrots in the dip. Now I am barely dipping a tiny bit of the end of the carrot in it.
My motivation is the following:
1). My DD called me fat the other day. (Rude)
2). I realized I have to go see a client and I relaized the only outfit that fit was the stretch travel knit collection from Chicos. I swear I could weigh 300 pounds and still fit in those pants.
3). My neighbor who was always much heavier than me lost a lot on weight in the last few months. Now she is thinner than me and that won't do. That leaves me the heaviest person on the block.
4). My car seat actually squeeked the other day when I sat down.

OK, here I go....

Way to go, Coral :thumbsup2

Replace all those bad snacks with good ones. Good thing about thing being a Cookie Mom, very quickly the sight of them gets on your nerves :rotfl: :rotfl: . Pretty soon my living room will be covered with them.

Ok, it's been a pretty good week for me. For the most part, I've eaten on plan. The only thing is that I can't seem to draw myself away from the DIS to go exercise.

I won't be weighing until Monday, so we'll see what the results are then.

Sounds like we've got a great group here. Let's be sure to check in and post sucesses and failures. We can all celebrate and encourage.

OK success #1...

I'm still alive.....

I will have a check up in two weeks so will let everyone know then about my progress....

Thanks so much Monica! I think this is exactly what I needed to get going. Like Shelley, or BBB, I was saying, "ditto... ditto... ditto..." to about everything she stated.

I'm Michelle, and I also lost alot of weight, then alot of things happened, got in a deep depression and bad food was my medication. And my body is at its happy weight (sigh).
This time, I am not going to go on the Atkins type diet (high protein, low carb), and am thinking of trying something different that can go more easily along with my family's lifestyle. I was thinking WW and alot of excersize.
All I drink is water, but I have gotten out of the habit of doing as much as I should, so I have been extremely dehydrated. I am also hoping all of my dieting hasn't screwed up my metabolism especially since I am getting older....

Glad to be onboard. I hope to be able to fit into one of those wench costumes in time for our cruise. I am grateful that I have a year and a half.
