Capt. Jack's Wenches (&swabbies) lose the weight for 8/08 Getting our Magic back!

Shelley, DH is doing Atkins. Your story sounds very much like his. He was drinking 2 LTR bottle of reg soda everynight when he came home from work, and he's a diabetic (weight related) :scared1: . Of course, when he started Atkins the soda had to go. He has switched to Peach Tea Crystal Light. The one positive effect of cutting out the soda is his sleep apnea seemed to improve drastically :confused3 . I think he was consuming so much sugar before bedtime he never really went into a full sleep (REM?).

Since being on the Atkins, his blood sugar levels have returned to almost normal without his meds, although Dr told him to stay on them.
Eating properly (even though our experience is Atkins, some people think of it as only protein. We followed the ORIGINAL Atkins by the old book and therefore it was primarily chicken, fish, some meat and pork, and real veggies excluding at first the ones high in carbs like potatoes and such) really does clear up a lot of problems.
DH didn't have as much to lose- but he did lose 35lbs last time and has gained it back (when he quit eating properly also). When he started Atkins he had less sleep apnea and snoring (and his asthma cleared up quite a bit too which probably helped the sleep apnea and snoring). For myself, I had more energy, didn't have breakouts on my face anymore, slept better (and for the only time in about the past 20 or so years didn't have insomnia), etc. All the more reasons for me to get back on track!

I have been doing well still with the water thing and no soda... but I really have to work at not eating things with sugar and flour in them and such. I'll get my head on straight soon. I think my mind is waiting until after Valentine's day. LOL
(choco-holic here)

Hi - Count me in. I love food - doesn't matter what kind - I just love it!! Chocolate and Ice Cream are my BIG down fall. I can eat a bag of chocolate without batting an eye. I just love it! My 3 yr old ds poked my leg the other day and said 'mom, your squishy'. Out of the mouths of babes. I would like to lose 80 lbs before the cruise. I know I can do it - just gotta get back on track. I had lost 70#'s and gained back 30. Not very happy about it but there is nothing I can do about it now except - not let it happen again. I know if I put my mind to it - I can do it. I will do it. My dad's side of the family has many health problems including diabetes, high blood pressure and heart problems. I don't want any of those. My only problem right now is my weight and I can change it.

Keep up the good work ladies! We can do it!

Hello fellow wenches & swabbies (are there any swabbies here?)!

My name is Pamela. I am 42, 5'3", 160 lbs and I just plain enjoy food! Chocolate is good, carbs are good, fruit & veggies are good, and so on ...

I was skinny and somewhat underweight until my mid-twenties. Then I gained a bit, maybe 10 pounds overweight which I lost for my wedding (1989) My DH is a good cook and my weight slowly crept up and I was probably about 15 lbs overweight before DS7 was born. I gained almost no weight other than the baby (gained about 12 lbs and he weighed about 9 when born) which worried the doctors, but didn't seem to cause any problems. The real weight gain came right after he was born. After 24 hours of labor, he was born by emergency c-section. Then they found he had been "breathing" meconium (sp? - his own poop) for quite some time and had an infection. He stayed in the Neonate ICU for a week. I was sent home after 3 days without him. I've never known exactly why, but I was totally wiped out from the surgery and was under orders to not go up/down stairs, not lift anything, not walk any more than inside my house, etc. Even after DS finally came home, I still wasn't allowed to do anything. Finally, 4 weeks later I was allowed to go out for "short" walks around my yard and then around the block. During those 4 weeks of forced inactivity I was bored out of my mind and ate continuously. I topped out at around 180 lbs and started trying to lose it. For the first 3 years, it didn't seem to matter WHAT I did, I couldn't lose anything - excersize, 1000 calories a day, nothing worked. It was very frustrating and I didn't always stick with it (eating more didn't cause me to gain either - I was just stuck!) but when DS turned 3, I finally started to VERY slowly lose weight. I am averaging about 5 lbs off per year which is insanely slow, but at least it is the right direction. I have dropped from size 16 right after he was born to size 12 right now.

In a typical day I have a slim-fast "shake" for breakfast, about 300 calories for lunch and a "normal" dinner. I have found I actually handle sugar/chocolate cravings better if I allow myself a little treat each day. So I'll have one dessert like thing. If I try to skip the sweets completely, usually after a couple weeks I'll just go nuts and seriously OD - like make a batch of chocolate chip cookie dough and eat the whole thing! I get to the gym at least once a week and try to do little things, like park farther out in the parking lot so I walk a little further. In the summer, I go for walks and garden, but that just doesn't work for me in the winter. It is 8* today and the sidewalks are all covered in snow and ice!

So anyway, I'm right with you trying to lose weight! I would love to lose 20 lbs by the cruise, but am trying not to get my hopes too high - past experience says that I will only lost 7 or 8 lbs in 18 months! I just keep trying to tell myself that it is better than nothing or gaining... My doctor told me that at least losing it this slowly, I have a really good chance of keeping it off!:woohoo:

Your story is similar to mine. Atleast we're close to the same height/etc and I'm 37 so we're close in age.
I also never had a problem with weight until after having children. I ate what I wanted, when I wanted (which included copious amounts of chocolate- sometimes that was all I ate for days in various forms!) and never gained. When I had my first daughter I gained only her basically and lost it within weeks. With my son I gained TONS of weight and ever since then had extreme problems losing weight. No diet worked. Exercising actually made me gain weight AND inches! It was like the fat was going nowhere but the muscle were bulking up- it stunk! I gained even more with my 3rd child. I was unable to lose weight no matter what I did until I did Atkins and lost 80lbs. When I went completely off Atkins after having surgery, I never got back on track and slowly gained the weight back over the past few years. :(

Slow and steady wins the race, so they say. :)

I am with all of you in 2008!I went back on weight watchers in June 2006...had to lose 80 pounds.. lost 37 by Christmas but went on a 2 week cruise to Hawaii... only gained 4 pounds on the cruise but have slipped a little since... so I am back! Way to go, Coral :thumbsup2

Replace all those bad snacks with good ones. Good thing about thing being a Cookie Mom, very quickly the sight of them gets on your nerves :rotfl: :rotfl: . Pretty soon my living room will be covered with them.

Not only am I the troop leader/cookie Mom..I am the neighborhood cookie rep... in about 2 weeks I will have 3000 cases invade my residence (they will mostly be picked up that day)... I agree..the over smell of mint and peanut butter will cure your taste for any of the cookies!

Hey everyone, weighed myself today and lost 1 lb. It's a success, so yes I'm happy. But I have a ton of reason why it was lower than I would have liked. However I'm not going to dwell on those, I'm just going to celebrate the success and keep it going.

Oh, and I also got my exercise in today. First time since I've decided to recommit to my diet.

I sure hope so! :rotfl2: Isn't it frustrating? I have gone weeks eating under 1300 calories a day and going to the gym and walking and so on and then you lose nothing  I actually got so annoyed at one point I threw out my scale! Since I now know how incredibly slow it is - I only weigh myself once a month or so and try not to "expect" anything...

Good luck to all you other wenches!

Good Job Monica!

I did work out for an hour yesterday. I didn't want to go at first.... trying to think up excuses. After it was all over with - I felt more energized and was happy I went. I'll be back at it again today. :woohoo:

I really wanted a piece of chocolate yesterday but then I saw my profile in the mirror. The big butt of mine got my attention. I put the candy back. :guilty:

Keep up the good work! :goodvibes

Hey, I resemble that remark. I got tired of everyone congratulating me on my pregnacy. :lmao: "No, I'm just fat." (I really do look pregnant - so I can't really blame them.)

Well, I signed up for the Health for Life wellness program at work today. Go in for my fasting blood draw and first assessment on the 15th. (Notice BBB - I took your advice, waited till after Valentines day? I have a feeling DH is going to play it up - and he rarely does that.)

Anyway, after doing the blood draw, initial assessment, I have to take the Mayo Health Clinic Risk Assessment, then meet with my "Whole Health Coach". After that they'll give me $50!! How sweet is that deal - I get the help I want getting my health under control, and they help with the cruise fund. Apparently, the health coach continues to meet with me while I'm on my "wellness action plan". Which is even better.

Saw my trainer yesterday - and had a very nice Pilates workout. Just gotta get the food under control. sigh.

But, I'm doing more than I used to.... :goodvibes
