Canon S3

Amy-

Thanks for that detailed response/comparison. Now all I have to do is fine one at a good price. Where did you get yours?

and DH will be happy since the SX10 is less than half the price of the XS1 LOL

Well, DH got me the SX10 for my bday, so I'm not supposed to know how much he paid.;) But I saw the credit card bill, and he got it from Amazon.com for around $375. If you want more opinions about this camera, check out Amazon.com and read the reviews.

LPZ_Stitch - welcome back! I always look forward to your photos, and you didn't disappoint - I esp. like the dew drops on the flowers.:thumbsup2

Hi ... it's nice to be back.

I took about twenty pics one morning when it was *really* foggy, but I liked that one the best. I didn't didn't notice it when I was taking the pic, but I was pleased to see that one really sharp drop right in the center! I love my S3's "SuperMacro"!! :goodvibes

Hopefully I'll have some time to post a couple more good pics from our last trip, too.

Thanks, Heather! I'm going to buy some lithium batteries today and hopefully that'll help. My zoom is still working OK -- how old is your camera?

Also, I'm thinking of getting an external flash. Does anyone have any recommendations? I want to take better indoor photos, and I'm thinking an external flash will help.

I love this thread!!!!

For those of you who are considering upgrading to the SX10 IS, I wanted to show you how awesome the 20x zoom. I visited my son at college yesterday. Here is the wide angle view:

And fully zoomed at 20x (I do NOT have digital zoom turned on):

I am guessing that is a handheld shot at 20x zoom? Was that on auto settings?

I was trying to figure out the zoom distances etc and from what I've read the 12x optical zoom equals 432mm and the 20x zoom equals 560mm? Is that right?

I currently have a 12x zoom and want to upgrade to get more reach and was looking at a cam w/18x zoom but that is only a diff of 54mm but when jumping from 12x to 20x it is 128mm, is that right?

From cam specs, pls correct if something is wrong.
optical zoom of:
12x = 432mm
18x = 486
20x = 560
24x = 624

Yep, handheld, and I used Aperture priority. I do believe 20x = 560. Not sure about your other specs.

Oh, I found something that I DON'T like about my SX10: it's very slow to focus when shooting movies. I did some short movies of DS's jazz band concert since DH wasn't able to make the trip with me and I didn't have the camcorder. So the movies were an indoor concert setting, stage lighting. (Haven't tried any movies in bright daylight, maybe it's better??) When I would pan the camera to shoot some of the other students, it would take a while to refocus. I had to pan the camera very slowly so it wouldn't lose focus. Zooming in and out didn't cause a problem, but moving the camera did.

Are you comparing similar x's? The manufacturers simply divide the upper effective focal length by it's lower effective focal length to get the x factor. So, the Canon s3/s5 is 36mm-432mm (432/36=12x). The SX10 is 28mm-560mm (560/28=20x). A Panasonic FZ18 is 28mm-504mm(18x), and a FZ28 is 27mm-486mm(18x). The Nikon Coolpix P90 is 26mm-624mm (624/26=24x).

Also, don't forget you can add on a 1.6-1.7x Teleconverter for very little cash and improve the EFL on your 12x from 432mm to 734mm. I'm really happy with the results of the Sony VCL-DH1758 Tele Conversion Lens on my S3.

Thanks for the info, I was not comparing them correctly.

I currently own a Pan FZ20 (36-432mm/12x) and am looking at either the FZ28 (27-486mm/18x) or the Canon SX10 IS (28-560mm/20x). So the FZ18 which was replaced by the FZ28 actually has more zoom (28-504mm/18x).

It just doesn't seem to me that the FZ28 is that much of an upgrade over my FZ20 but the SX10 would be. However the insides of the camera has been upgraded.

Also playing into the decision is that at a local store near me the FZ28 is approx $90 less than the SX10.

Got tired of taking pictures of the dogs so I had DD18 put on last year's prom dress and went out in the pasture for some pics....

the "old" Canon S3 and S5's can still deliver good image quality !

I have the SZ 10 IS and was wondering if anyone has this problem or can tell me what I might be doing wrong.

Sometimes when I lift the flash and try to take a pic it is a good 30 seconds before the camera will let me take the picture. Now I am not a photographer so I do not know technical terms so I will put it in my terms...the little green box on the screen doesnt show up for a while, thus not letting me take the pic or the little baleep noise doesnt go so I can't tkae a pic. I have tried just holding the button down and even then it takes a while. Anyone know/?

Beautiful DD and great shots.

Pssst....love the shoes. ;)

:rotfl: I figured that her shoes wouldn't show in most of the pictures and she was going to be walking around a horse pasture I didn't think she needed heels!! ;)

I want to get some of her in that dress with the horses next!

Took this today of DD getting ready for prom!! :goodvibes I loved how it turned out...
