Canon Rebel XT ?

It behooves you to do some basic research into what they offer...

You gotta respect it when someone can fit "behooves" into a discussion board post. I haven't been this impressed since I saw "fortnight" a while back.

smart woman, given a little more time this thread could have gotten to be 25 pages long, you might have been totally confused and just given up:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: i was going to mention the xt is under $400 now but.......

Someone with a lot of time "could" merge a lot of threads together to make a general FAQ on what DSLR to buy. ;) LOL :rotfl:

Is the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT - EOS 350D a good camera? This would be my first digital SLR and for $388 (new from buydig), it is within my budget. It is 8 mp. For about $200 I can get a 12 mp. Will I really miss the 4 mega pixels?

Not unless you make a lot of poster sized prints to cover your walls...

That original digital rebel was the standard for most Canon entry level DSLR users until the updates that came out. Nothing at all wrong with it and at the time was advanced. Like any technology these days it gets outpaced quickly and now you can get a bargain. There are a lot more important features to be concerned with than megapixles, however, so make sure you get what you need based on those features and forget megapixels - highly over-rated.

The XSI- the 12 megapixel model- has some other features that the XT doesn't, like live view. Still, it's a great camera.

To reiterate the above, mexapixels are not everything. A Canon 1d SLR which is a 4MP pro SLR from 2001 still goes for just under $1k used.

Make sure that you want to get into SLRs and the budget sapping disease that comes with it. :rotfl:

Also make sure that $388 includes a lens, or you will have to plan for at least one lens to go with it.

As far as DSLRs go, the XT is a nice light body that can take excellent pictures. If you have small hands, it is more comfortable than the next series up. As mentioned above the XS/XSI should be similar if you want to go feel the weight and size of one.

I know its an older canon but have the chance to get one as a trade for a lens would get the camera. the kit lens and the usual stuff that comes with it new. my question to the canon users is it a good body? would be used as a backup or as my something diffrent to shot with camera not my main, that would still be my pentax. thinking of doing it to open up a whole new can of LBA since i am pretty set on the pentax side:rotfl2: . any opinions and what do you think about the camera good and bad

It is my model as well. And even in spite of my skill levels it has produced quite a few good pics.

The only thing I would like to add is spot metering.

how many clicks of the shutter are on the trade camera?

Mikeeee

is it that much of a dog:confused3 no one has opinions or ever owned it:drinking1

The boards were just that slow yesterday, not too many interesting topics. Looked only ten times!!

The Canon Rebel XT was one of the first cameras I looked at when looking for a dslr, as I've been away from photography since high school. When I was looking at all the entry-level cameras, I found (to me) that none of the manufactures had anything that separated them from each other. The quality of photos were pretty much the same. The only difference I saw was the name brand. Now some were/are better at high ISO's, some were faster, and had tons of more accessories available at nearly every retail outlet. Why am I saying what you already know?

It's a good camera! The question is," Can you live without the lens you are willing to trade"? You have a VERY good selection of lenses for your Pentax. Pentax was my second choice above the LOWLY OLY!

Hey, oogieboogieman, maybe you could speak to what it's like regularly using two different brands of cameras - your Oly and your Sony. Maybe it wouldn't bother someone else, but I wouldn't like that, it would be confusing.

gokenin, lots of people here have/had the XT. It was the first dSLR I considered as well, a used one also (later went with a new Oly E510). It's a fine camera, just an older model. And I'd wonder about the number of shutter clicks also.

i just saw this, have an xt, the only thing i have a problem with is imo the iso stinks past 400( well at least mine does, i really notice it in cold weather which sounds nutty but if it's really cold the noise is worse which i don't pretend to understand why) sometimes even with noiseware i can still some at 400 much less 800. then again i am annoyingly picky. but for a backup it would be fine. it's just newer cameras have better noise levels( and i want the speed of the 40/50d). i don't remember what the shutter click number is but i take a lot of photos, mine is almost 2 yrs old( had problems with my first copy and a lens, canon gave me new body and new lens since they couldn't really figure out what was going wrong) and so far no problems( i have over 250+ gb saved so what ever that would convert to plus the ones i haven't saved)
i usually use partial metering which is 9% vs spot's 3% so to me that isn't a huge problem

camera quality aside though, if you don't have lenses for it i would wonder about taking on another brand, unless you have plenty of money to burn for 2 sets of lenses, unless you figure you are pretty set with pentax. how much use will you get out of another brand if you only have one lens for it? and Canon lenses don't seem to depreciate much so good lenses aren't ever really cheap. it might seem more useful to stick with the brand you have lenses for.

Since I bought the 5-6 year old Olympus E-1, the Sony justs sits in the corner and it didn't do anything wrong. Along with the lenses and flash that my wife bought for me. I can tell you that is a topic of great discussion around my house. Everytime I mention anything about a camera it still come up!

I dont think that I will invest in a huge number of lens for the canon but you never are safe saying that once LBA has a new target now can you. I am really thinking of getting the camera and having it converted to an IR only camera so it really would only be a specialty camera for me not my day to day. The guy would be getting it from bought it new a few months back when he was thinking of switching and has only put about a thousand clicks on the shutter so is basically a new camera. Would really only be one lens that I would have to trade and have other lens that cover that specific distance and the FA 77 limited is just as good as the DA70 limited

if you want to dabble in ir check out alien skin exposure..think there is a free trial and they have/had( they recently put out a new one) some ir film sets although i don't think they really look all that accurate.

I have an XT as well. It was my first dSLR, and I really enjoyed it. It doesn't get used a lot now that I have newer models, but I use it as a back up, primarily at weddings. It takes some great pictures. Yes, it does produce more noise at higher ISOs than my 50D and 5D, and probably even my 30D. But it is certainly capable of taking some great photos. I used it for a few Disney trips as my primary camera, and when I look at those photos, I'm really happy with what the camera was able to do. Funny though, when I look at the display on the back now, it seems so tiny! You do have me thinking now that maybe I should convert one of mine to IR...:rolleyes1

I don't have a Rebel XT, I have the previous model - the original Canon Digital Rebel, no bloody X, T, S, or I.

My Rebel is 6.1megapixel, even less than the XT, and its noise levels at 800 and 1600ISO are even higher than the XT. NOTE: "High" noise levels are subjective; the Digital Rebel series always has higher noise at the same ISO than Canon's higher level cameras like the 5D, 1DS series, or 20-30-40-50D series, but they are significantly lower than bridge or P&S cameras at the same ISO.

Still, it's a great beginners DSLR and I love it. It takes great pics, so long as I have a good lens on it, and it's been reliable and fairly durable over the 4 years I've owned it.

Based on my experience with the original Rebel, I can safely say that the Rebel XT is a great investment as a backup camera if you can get one cheap.

HI
I bought this camera yesterday
http://www.flickr.com/photos/34613167@N02/show/
Make sure you click "Show Info" because i wrote down the shutter speed value and aperture value

Here are my challenges:
#1:
Look at image 0914,0915, 0916. You will find that i have hard time achieving what i want to do at Av mode.
I basically wanted to make the background(in this case the cart) blurred. I tried different aperture value as shown in the "Show info"

#2
I found that the bedroom light is reasonably bright but not bright enough.
What would be a cost-effective way to improve that in imperfectly bright circumstance? (Speedlite? But it is at least 200 bucks!!....something cheaper?)

#3
I also feel that it would have been nice ,for beginner to have "Live view" to preview things like Av mode result but i know only newer model has that.

Thanks for your suggestion in advance ! ^_^

1. The result is not very blurred in the background because your f stop was only F5, this is only going to get you blurred results with objects farther from the subject. F10 that is used in another picture will get a larger Depth of focus, not smaller and makes it more difficult to hand hold. F29 makes the DOF very large, the image quality will be softer due to diffraction and, as you can see, you need a very bright shot to take this without a tripod as your exposure time is 2 seconds. If you want extremely shallow depths of focus you will need a very fast lens....say 1.8 or faster.

2. The light seems fine when your f-stop was appropriate. When you chose F4 you got a exposure time of 1/60 which was enough for a still child. You might benefit by better setting the white balance though.

3. Many DSLR's have a depth of field preview viewable through the viewfinder. Not sure if the XT has this...check the manual.
