Canon Rebel XT ?

I know this could have been found out with a little research but I thougth that i might could get an answer just a quick here and much more personably. ;) So here goes, does the Rebel Xt 8.0 mpx have an exposure bracketing feature?

yes, auto exposure bracketing + or _ 2stops in 1/3 or 1/2 increments, also flash exposure bracketing in the same increments

Thanks so much for the fast response. That info really helps with the purchase im probably going make next month.

since the xts are not being made anymore keep your eyes open so they don't go out of stock ...some places will tell you they have so many left in stock.

that's probably anyone's guess..but since the xti would probably go first maybe so, that's a little more than a month. if you can't find a a new one you might be able to find a used on on fredmiranda or someplace except you might be taking a chance with the shutter usage...i think it's like 20,000 clicks give or take. or maybe you can get the xti cheaper once the price for the xsi goes down a bit.

Not looking for added lenses or anything. I have 3 young kids (8, 6, 5) into soccer and tball. Point and shoot just doesn't cut it. Looking for a good starter SLR camera. I know you guys will come through!! BTW, leaving for Disney in a WEEK!!

Have you done any research into buying a dSLR?

Questions like this can become the subject of heated debate. There have been many threads like it if you go back and search through the pages of the Board.

Everyone has their brand preferences. Basically all of the starter dSLRs - Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony and Olympus - will do a good job for you and all have their pros and cons. (You also have to buy lenses for them.)

It behooves you to do some basic research into what they offer (or lack) so that you can make an informed decision. What I or someone else likes may not be the right choice for you.

Thought I would come out of luker-land to help with this question! :)

Previous poster is correct; on a lot of boards this becomes a heated discussion as to what brand is better. Neither are better or worse, they all have their pros and cons. My standard answer to anyone asking this question is you should take some time, run down to a camera shop, best buy, costco, etc. and start fooling around with the different cameras. Figure out which one has more intuitive menus for you to use, fits in your hand and has the best price for you.

The biggest difference between the XT and the D40 is the focusing system. Since you mentioned you aren't interested in buying lenses, I'm thinking that the kit lens is what you are looking to primarily use. The D40 will fulfill that wish of yours; however, if you do decide to go with the basic Nikon system, you have to be aware that the D40 does have an external auto-focus system inside the lens. Ultimately, this will limit the number of lenses you can use (with auto focus, manual focus will still work) with this particular camera. With that said... the D60 is the newest Nikon base model and that particular camera has the same external auto-focus system and shows that Nikon has a commitment to keeping this part of their line-up of lenses. Which shows growth potential in the future. The higher-end Nikon models do not have this external focusing system as the motor is located inside the camera itself. All the Canon cameras have the internal focusing system as well.

The XT will produce creamier skin tones, but more muted coloring, while the D40 will produce a more vivid coloring. It's just a slight difference that 99.9% of people will never notice! :) Canon has a better handle on noise reduction at higher ISO's than the Nikon's do (anything over ISO 400 and you start getting some significant noise, which is irritating!). The thing that causes these differences is the sensor that each brand has as proprietary information.

But like I said at the beginning of the post; feel them out. See which one seems more intuitive for you to use and learn on. If you aren't interested in really growing your lens collection, or the real ins-and-outs of dSLR photography, either one will be an excellent choice for the activities you've mentioned.

Maybe at default jpeg settings, but both cameras can be tweaked to the photographers taste in jpeg output.

And when you shoot RAW, the photographer can pretty much control that issue.

Totally appreciate what you have to say. There is a lot you can control in RAW post processing and in the menus, if you know what you are doing. However, this particular poster doesn't sound like the type to either 1) want to do a lot of pp'ing and 2) know how to do the pp'ing part. SOOC shots, when comparing the differences in coloring and skin tones between the two sensors, is what causes these differences. Personally, I hate messing with the menus and doing much in terms of pp'ing of my personal work. So I want my personal shots to look as perfect as possible right out of the camera.

While I enjoy reading what Ken Rockwell has to say about these things, I don't take his writings as gospel. He did do an excellent comparison between the different brands (Nikon D3 & Canon 5D), ISO performance and color, that is an interesting read. :)

ETA: Sorry, I don't have a high-enough post count to do a direct link. I'd be happy to PM you with the link if you'd like. :)

Dont get me wrong, I did not suggest that you or the OP mess with the menus or Post process(which in my opinion is not the same as converting RAW files). Just pointing out that they can be adjusted.

You mean this link?

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech.htm

If you do a quick search, you'll find about 100 threads on your exact topic. ;) Take Ken's advice with a grain of salt as well...but he does give out some great tips and I've found his reviews on lenses and cameras to be spot on most of the time.

Whoo hoo! I finally have enough posts to do a direct link! :)

Here is the link!

I agree... I take Ken Rockwell with a huge grain of salt. I like reading him, but I don't take what he says as the gospel! :)

I ended up not getting either one and went with a Canon Powershot S5 IS. I think I am going to be really happy with it after reading about it on here. Thanks everyone!
