has anyone here have a Canon Powershot A590? im thinking of getting one for DD12. is it worth it or what? good pics or is it cheap? thanks

Wow, interesting thread title for the content..

I have no clue, but you may want to check down in the photography area also..

I have no idea, but you'll get more responses from folks who do if you ask this on the photography board.

Good luck!! :)

I believe my sister or my parents may own that model.

They both bought their cameras a few years ago. Canons are a good camera. I liked their cameras (different model #s) so I bought one a while after they did and got the PowerShot A710 IS. I like that they take regular batteries or rechargable batteries. They are easy to use. Check how many batteries that model needs. Mine only takes two AA's and both my sister and my parents take four AA's.

I bought a Canon Powershot SX100IS about a month ago. I LOVE it. It's got a 10x optical zoom, in a relatively compact size. I replaced an old Canon Powershot A85 that I had used for about 4 years. I've had really good luck with my Canons.

The SX100 may be difficult to find though, Canon has just announced its replacement -- the SX110, which should be a worth a look if you're just getting into the market.

I have the A550, and both DH and I love it. It is easy to use, and takes pictures that seem very nice/quality to me (I am a casual camera user, ie on vacations, family outings etc). I have yet to even learn how to use most of the settings on it, but the Auto setting worked for us most of the time day or night.

One of my fav, things about it (not sure if this would be the same on the 590) is that it has a raised edge on the front that you can curl your fingers around as you hold it/take pictures. Not sure if that makes sense, but I don't like the flat square cameras as I always feel like I'm going to drop them, this feels more secure to me. HTH

yeah I loved my cannon powershot...sadly it was stolen when I was on the TOT lol. I left it on the photo counter outside the ride by mistake...didn't even walk out the store and realized I didn't have it went back to the counter and it was gone :(

You will love the camera, takes nice pictures...I like all cannon products.

I have the A710 IS... love it. It's a point and shoot (meaning that it has a good "automatic" mode for those who don't want to make any adjustments, just click photos), yet the manual shooting modes are incredibly versatile and you can do a ton of customizing. It's a great all around camera for beginners as well as those who are looking for some more high end features.

Pretty much all of the A-series cameras are the same, they only vary when it comes to the number of megapixels, the amount of optical zoom, image stabilization, etc.

I perfer the A-series because they do NOT have an internal Lithium battery, but instead use two AAs. I have NI-MH rechargables, but if you happen to drain those you can always pop in two regular AAs and keep shooting. With cameras with built in batteries (any "slim" or compact model of camera), if your battery runs out you're often stuck without a camera until you can recharge.

Oh, and to answer your question, you definitely won't be disappointed with the A590. It's definitely not a "cheap" camera and should take VERY good pictures. If your daughter is a little bit tech-savvy, she'll have a ton of fun playing around with its features, learning about digital photography, and transferring pictures to the computer to view/print/edit them. I would also recommend that in addition to the camera, you buy an additional SD card that's at least 2 GB (roughtly $10-$15), along with a SD memory card reader ($10), so that you can transfer pictures to your computer without having to plug the camera in and waste batteries when you do that. The A590 even includes image stabilization (hence the "IS" at the end of the model number), which helps you take pictures with less blur that can often come from taking pictures in medium-to-low light situations.

I have had the SD750 for a few months now... pretty standard not too expensive yet still takes great pics! So far I love it and I can't wait to try it out in 2 weeks!

I am a technology director for a K-12 school district in the Buffalo NY area. I just purchased 8 A590 for my elementary schools for teacher and student use. I Love canon digital cameras. They are easy to use, have IS (image stabilization). Only issues you need to know is they eat Alkaline batteries. I recommend rechargeable, 2200ma or higher. For $25 you can get 4 batteries and a charger. Again, it;s real easy to use has auto white balance. It's perfect for teachers and students to point and shoot.

Good luck

thanks for the info too Simba77. that will help.

and thank you to everyone who has helped so far and who will help in the future.

This is the camera I have and I love it! It's easy to use and the pics come out great. I even use it to take short videos and they come out okay. I can take about 10 short videos and take about 500 pics on 2 lithium batteries.

I have the A540 and I love it. My DD uses it all the time. Its really easy to use but like others have mentioned it goes through batteries fast.
