I am trying to shop my pantry, but other than salmon burgers I have no ideas.

Please help! Thank you. :worship:

The only other thing I can think of is salmon patties. We like to eat them with mac and cheese. I've heard of salmon loaf, but I think that sounds kind of yucky. I don't know why really.

My mother used to make salmon and eggs. Basically scrambled eggs with salmon; she probably used cream in the scrambled eggs, too. I remember it being peppery. It wasn't bad.

:scratchin

...can’t remember the taste of a canned salmon, but… if it’s on the canned tuna side taste, I’d mixed it with a little mayo / ranch dressing / spicy ranch dressing (choose what you like the best). Then you could add some canned peas and/or canned corn and serve it on French / Italian bread or with crackers. You could add some more finely chopped fresh veggies like onion, pepper, celery, etc.

Or, if it’s more like “salmon” taste, instead of canned veggies use fresh lettuce, thin sliced pepper (green/red/yellow), thin sliced fresh onion, etc. serve it on tortilla wrap sprinkled with parmesan cheese and some ranch / spicy ranch / caesar dressing…

Weight watchers has this great warm salad. It's broccoli and chick peas, finely diced onions with salmon flaked. The sauce is mustard, lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper. Served warm, it's delicious. I make brown rice with it.

I don't eat salmon so have not tried this but Giada or Paula Dean (can't remember) on Food TV made a Salmon Cake a few weeks ago. It was basically a crab cake recipe that she used salmon for. (maybe this is the same thing as a salmon patty mentioned above). It was bread crumbs, so mayo, onions, celery, spices etc. You can go to foodtv.com and type canned salmon in the ingredients search. It will give you recipes. Bigoven.com has recipes as well.

DH's family makes Salmon stew. I do not like it but some people love it. Basicly milk, can salmon, butter salt and pepper and heat till steaming.

Eat with crackers.

I wanted to love canned salmon...I really did. I thought since I love fresh salmon, I might enjoy the canned version.

I opened that thing up and was shocked and appalled by the fish parts I found in there! Definitely not like tuna. I don't think I'll be able to use it for anything...and I've got 3 or 4 unopened cans still in the pantry.

Was anyone else in for a rude awakening when they tried it for the first time?

Salmon Salad
  • 2 cans of pink Salmon
  • 1/2 cup of pickle relish
  • 3/4 to 1 full cup of mayo or Miracle Whip
  • hint of mustard - to taste
  • sugar to taste

Tip: Most times I add more miracle whip, but for recipe reason I said a cup. I really don’t measure. This is great with crackers or as a sandwich. This is much better than tuna to me. Tuna is way too fishy for me.

Salmon Croquettes
  • For every Can of pink Salmon - one egg
  • chopped onions, green peppers, maybe a red pepper
  • bread crumbs - either store purchased (in box) or make your own
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • hint of garlic powder (optional)
mix this really nice and firm. Make a patty. On the stove, heat skillet and put in a small amount of Olive oil. Fry both sides of patties until brown. Take them out of skillet, let them drain.

Clean, drain, separate salmon from bones. If you are doing some kind of low carb diet, you don't have to add the bread crumbs BUT your going to have to fry them longer (maybe more oil) for a firm patty. I do that all the time (without the bread). Tip: be mindful that your going to have to possibly napkin "clean" the skillet after every set of patties you fry.

Salmon Loaf
(Like meat loaf)

  • Take at least 2 cans of pink Salmon (I usually use 3), clean, drain, separate salmon from bones
  • Add finely chopped onions, green peppers, and optional red peppers.
  • Add 1 egg for every can of Salmon.
  • 1 cup of breadcrumbs (from toasted bread) or ½ cup of store purchased fine breadcrumbs
  • 1 cup of spaghetti sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
Add all the ingredients except the spaghetti sauce in a bowl and mash with our hands together. If the mixture is ‘dry’ add another egg. You don’t want the mixture sloppy wet but moist. Place the mixture in a loaf pan. Place in oven for 20 minutes. After removal add the spaghetti sauce and let it cook for another 20 –25 minutes.

I LOVE canned salmon made ito salmon patties!!! It is also very good for you. THe bones have tons of calcium. THey are very soft so I just mash it up in the rest of it.

All I do is mix one raw egg, the contents of the can (mash up the bones), and about 3/4 sleeve saltine crackers and mix it all together and form into patties. Fry or bake until brown.

I love fresh salmon and canned. But they are definitely very different from each other, just like fresh tuna and canned. I do clean the canned when making patties or the kids will object, but you don't have to do that, the bones are soft and full of calcium.

I love salmon cakes, but it's also really good in quiche.
That WW salad sounds really yummy too.

Try Bumble Bee Skinless & Boneless Premium Wild Pink Salmon. I have it in my pantry in a packet (like tunafish comes in now), so you don't have to drain the can. It also comes in cans. It doesn't have the yucky parts in there.

I mix it with mayo and eat it on bread as a sandwich. I like it better than tunafish.

I have been hungry for salmon patties ever since this thread was started!!! I just back from a stop at Sams and I bought a 4 pack!!!! Guess we will have salmon one day next week!!!!

This is what we use also -- I have two kids that LOVE salmon patties (the recipe above with an egg and breadcrumbs and then fried). YUM!!

I used canned (pouch really) salmon to make pasta salad. I cook up some pasta and add hard boiled eggs, salmon, green onion, little bit garlic powder and mayo and mix it all up. It is a yummy dinner that even my kids will eat!

The one with the bones has more calcium and I like it.

Try this one- Salmon etoufee:

2 Cans Salmon--15 1/2 oz.
6 Tablespoons butter or margarine
2 Tablespoons Flour
1 1/4 Cups Onions -- chopped
1 Teaspoon Tomato puree
1 Clove garlic -- chopped
2 Shallots -- chopped
1/4 Teaspoon Tabasco sauce
1/4 teaspoon Pepper
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1/4 cup Parsley -- chopped
1 cup Water
1/2 cup Celery -- chopped

Melt margarine in pan and remove from heat. Stir in flour until smooth Return to heat and cook until dark brown, stirring constantly. Lower heat; stir in onions, shallots, garlic, and celery and cook until soft abt. 10 to 15 min., stirring often.

Lower heat to simmer. Dissolve tomato puree in 1/4 cup water and stir into roux. Add remaining water, salmon and parsley. Stir to blend. Add tabasco sauce, salt, and pepper. Cover and simmer about 20 min. Serve over hot cooked rice.

We chill a can of salmon in the fridge along with a can of asparagus. We open both cans, drain, arrange on a plate, and whip some mayo with lemon juice. Then we add some salmon, asparagus, and a dab of a mayo on a cracker, and enjoy. We love it! It's one of our favorite lunches.

I've found that the pouches are ok but the cans are just not for me.

Salmon patties are a favorite around here. Mix the salmon with an egg, breadcrumbs, and spices. Cook in it a pan with a little melted butter. Yummy.

I grew up with my mother taking out the bones and skin so I was aware that it was there, but once I was on my own, doing it myself . . . ew!!!!! Once I was done picking I pretty much had lost my appetite, and that's hard to do! Thank goodness they came out with canned boneless skinless salmon.
