Canadian DISer's Weight Loss Get In Shape Thread

I've been working really hard at dropping the pounds lately. I'm 5'6'', and size 24, almost down to 22 after a 15lb loss over the last 5 weeks. My hubby made up a sheet in excel that tracks my calorie intake, and tells me how many I have left for the day, how many I've had all week, and it graphs my weekly progress. It's simple, but so handy! I also do 30-45 minutes of cardio 4-5 times a week.

I think one of the best tips is to write down EVERYTHING you eat before it crosses your lips. It really helps curb the mindless eating!! I can't stress this enough!

The thing that inspired me to start this new regime is that I was really strongly considering bariatric surgery. But as I did the research for the procedure, I came to realise how much hard work there is after. It's not a magic bullet! You still want to overeat, you just get super sick if you do. So I decided, if I put in the effort NOW that I would have to put in THEN, I could lose the weight and keep my digestive track in one piece!

Like I said, I'm only 15 lbs down. But I'm feeling motivated and inspired and I know that if I work hard enough, I'll achieve my goal!

:welcome: to our group! It sounds like you are off to a great start. It is great that your hubby is so supportive as well. I am glad that you have the view on surgery that you do. I think many people look at it as an easy fix but I am of the same opinion as you that it should only be used as a last resort once you have sincerely tried losing the weight on your own.

Good Morning Ladies!! Just wanted to let you know that I'm up...I'm going to have a bowl of oatmeal (I usually do not eat breakfast) & a coffee with milk, not cream. I'm also going to get my too-big butt off the couch today & go for a long walk! Today I will start my 10,000 steps a day program (without holding a wine glass & bowl of chips!! ha!) & I will drink nothing during the day except water.

Good luck Ladies going into the weekend! Remember, YOU CAN DO IT & YOU ARE WORTH IT!!!! :cheer2:

I am sooooo happy to find this thread:love: I have been looking for something to motivate me to get moving and I think this is it. I don't mind my weight so much but I just can't stand the jiggle any more. Candy and Cheese are my biggest enemies. I am going to get off the computer right now and do my exercise video.:yay: Good luck to everyone. Back in my bikini for Disney Trip March 2008:thumbsup2

Ladies ~ You Inspire Me!

I'm mentally planning my meals this morning before heading to the trailer. I'll be good up there and think of you all! THANKS!

PS: HEY MEL! I met your sister and nephew yesterday at Price Chopper [in the veggie section of course....heeheehee]. I know your nephew C very well! We chatted for a while and then he came up to me and whispered, "I think you know my Aunt Mel." I laughed so hard! He is the sweetest kid! He came to visit my school program in June with his buddy A. We will do coffee. I am an ex-smoker, but I'm the best ex-smoker around.....I admit, I still like the smell of ciggies.

Blessings, Sandra

Diet By Numbers

by SandraC

My diet plan is all about MATH;

FACT: 3500 calories = 1 pound, so I have to decrease my caloric intake and increase my physical activity to burn the calories.

ACTIVITY: Multiple your current weight by these factors:

10 for inactive
13 for moderately active
15 for very active

MY WEIGHT: 229 lbs x 13 [moderately active] = 2977

To maintain my current weight of 229 lbs, I have to each 2977 calories. Since I already adjusted my lifestyle from inactive to moderately active, I know have to adjust my caloric intake.

I am aggressively attacking the weight with a 1200 calorie a day diet. Do not eat less than 1200 a day, it's not healthy. Your body will hold on to the fat you have because it's starving.

2977 - 1200 calories = 1777 calories burned daily

3500 divided by 1777 = 1.97 days. So every 1.97 days [or 2 days to round it off] I will lose 1 lbs [3500 calories].

I will adjust this as I lose weight.

Since I'm not eating a lot of calories, I have to be very wise about those calories. Lots of veggies & fruits, whole wheats, protein and very little fat...and only the good fat. Lots of water and I need my tea too!

I just started this week and I already feel better! S

LADIES! Make yourself a priority in your life!Blessings, Sandra

I've been trying to lose weight since the beginning of the year. I put on about 25 pounds in the last year since starting my new job (crazy huh) - I find I have less time to work out and being downtown where almost everyone goes out for lunch and gets Tim's for breakfast every morning, it's all very tempting!

Anyway, I've lost 15 pounds so far and I'm hoping to lose the last 10 pounds before I leave next month. I have dropped from a (very tight) size 12 back down to a size 6 and if I can go back down to a size 4 I won't be as worried about the weight :) I recently added in weight training to my routine so I know my weight loss might slow down a little.

Things that have helped me lose weight are - eating at least 5 servings of fruits and veggies a day, drinking 8 glasses of water a day, replacing my daily Tim's coffee with green tea (no sugar or cream), cutting out as much processed foods, kicking my juice habit and cutting junk food out of my grocery list. I do allow myself one cheat day a week so that I don't completely deprive myself of all the things that I love to eat.

I also run for at least 30 minutes and do Pilates 3 times a week. That's all I can think of for now. I'm glad to see that there are other's trying to lose weight as well! I hope we can all help to motive each other:)

I'll join. When we went to Disney in Oct 2005 I was 228lbs. November 2006 when I started my new job I was 212lbs. Just before March I was 205lbs, went to Dominican Republic end of March got travel sickness lost 5lb. Joined Weight Watchers and am now 184lb. My ultimate goal is 145-150lbs. I don't stay for WW meetings, too much shift work and am not really into the meetings.

ok - i admit....i ate chocolate last night....I did so very good in the day, but then we were celebrating a promotion last night, had a couple glasses of wine, and then chocolate ice cream (my weakness) came out....i felt terrible!! Sandra - where were you to knock that spoon out of my hand?!?!?!

So, now I have some ground work to make up. GOOD tip on the writing it down before eating the food....thanks!!!

My tip for the day - make sure you eat breakfast....your body has been starving all night, so make sure you take the time to eat a healthy, whole grain type of breakfast. Also ensure that one of the first things that you do is to drink a big glass of water....your body has gone 8 hours without hydration and should be replenished. I keep a glass by the bathroom sink, so since that's the first place I go to in the morning, I take a drink!!

The other thing I thought would be a good idea is to share shopping tips. I just bought a cereal very high in fiber, made with whole wheat, and has fruit in it, with very little sugar. It's called "yogactive" - it has flakes of dried probiotic yoguart in it - but I find I usually take those out - it's really good and quite tasty. Anybody else??

Also, do we want to do a weigh in every Sunday?

I'm all for the weigh in every Sunday. I did my hour video this morning :yay: and felt so good after. Have been drinking lots of :drinking1 water. My only cheat today was a handful of my dd hot tamalies.... LOVE CANDY. To help my sugar cravings I make light jello with light cool whip and add rasberries.

I think a weigh in every Sunday is a great idea. That way we can all congratulate each other on how great we are all doing and it also provides an extra incentive to work out and eat well as we know we are going to be coming clean here on the boards!

You can post your weight if you are comfortable with that or you can just post haw many pounds you lost. Whatever makes each person comfortable.

I'm in too:yay: !!! Was 210 lbs after pregnancy then 170 lbs on maternity leave, then 190 lbs last winter and now 180 lbs. I've been walking 30-60 minutes since June. Now I'm doing 3x/week pilates. We can do it!!!:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

I really want to join this group as well. I'm just hoping that there might be others out there in my situation. I have two herniated discs in my lower back and find it hard to do alot of exercise. I am limited in my abs workouts and have to modify weight training. I also cannot walk at an incline. Can anyone relate to this? Would love to hear how you have overcome this hurdle.

My Mom just had surgery on her back for 2 herniated discs. I will talk to her and see what she suggests. I think Sandra has really made us accountable for this and I for one am very thankful Sandra started this!

Hey I've never tried a quote so I hope this works
I was Dx last year with Degenerative Bone disease,,,(back hips ankles --you name it where there's a joint it seems to be slipping in there)so I kinda know what you are saying although I'm sure yours is much more painful. . I am going to look into getting a few "dance exercise DVD/videos from my SIL and check out an exercise ball. I know when I fell and hurt my tailbone years ago they suggested an exercise ball. Just a thought. Has your Doc suggested anything?
