Can you switch resorts if you don't like it?

I'm curious about something. I just booked one night at the GF (Sugar Loaf concierge). Unfortunately, we are checking in the day AFTER Thanksgiving so the resort will be full by the time we check in on Friday. If we really don't like our room/view (I'm sure we will end up with the room no one else wanted who had checked in earlier in the week), can we switch to a different resort and be credited the difference? We are paying over $500 for the night and don't want to end up with a lousy room or view for that kind of money. BUT I've always wanted to give the GF a try to see if we would like it.

Has anyone switched resorts after checking in? Was there a penalty? If you downgrade, do they credit your card?

Thanks!

My experience has been that when the resorts are full you can not change resorts period....there are no other rooms available to switch to. Also, if you leave the room because you don't "like it", or don't think it's worth the money that is not the hotels fault and you will still be charged for the night because you booked the room and agreed to pay for that night.

I would definitely call WDW and check with them before you go so you know what your options are. You don't want a family vacation wasted hasseling over a hotel room....

How do you know that the person with the best room didn't check out that morning and you got their room?

Imho if you're going to be stressed out about room views, you might want to consider booking a standard room at the GF

The views at Sugar Loaf are all very good and similar, you will either have a view of the pool and the surrounding gardens, or a view of the marina.

We have been on each floor, both ends of the building and I can honestly say I did not have a preference.

Someone has to check out for you to check in therefore as stated you might get a very desirable room that someone has been in for a long time. Truly there is no way to know.

I would try not to get disappointed even before you arrive.

What about if you just don't like the resort? I'm doing a split stay in Dec between POFQ and CSR. I'm not concerned about the POFQ, but am afraid that if we get stuck way out in the Ranchos at CSR that we won't be happy. I am requesting Casitas 3 or Cabanas 9b or 8a, so should have a decent chance to not be in the Ranchos. My mom will be with me, using an ECV, and we would really like to be close to the main building. If we get stuck out in the Ranchos, what would it take to get transferred back over to the POFQ? Does anyone know if there would be a fee to transfer and if so how much since they are both moderate resorts. I have BRP ressies if that matters. This is for Dec 9th-18th, with us being at CSR Dec 14th-18th.

I would ask the resort itself if they had a different room before trying to move to another resort. Remember that anytime you book a hotel, you have the chance of getting a not so good view or location.

Thanks for all the replies! Unfortunately, the concierge room is the ONLY room available, so booking a standard (or lagoon which I would do in a heartbeat) is not an option. But the 45-day cancellation mark is coming up next week, so maybe there will be some rooms opening up. I will keep checking... Although keeping my concierge room might be nice too - we've never done concierge before....

Thanks Sammie for reassuring me that all the rooms in Sugar Loaf have nice views. I guess I was afraid of being stuck in a room with a huge tree outside my balcony!! (which has happened to me AKL twice).

Yes, you can. On our last trip to WDW in 2002, my husband and I had booked two nights at AsSports and three nights at CBR. This was the first time that we had stayed at a Disney Resort so we did not know what to expect at any of the resorts, especially a value resort. It was so noisy and there were kids running around outside of our door. My mom was with us on our trip and she couldn't stand the value resort because of the noise level. The next day we transferred to CBR as part of our package and we instantly fell in love with it. There was hardly any noise and especially no kids running wild. We were going to transfer back to AsSports on the fourth night, but we ended up staying and paying the difference. My husband, my in-laws, and I will be leaving in about two weeks for our next trip and my husband had one stipulation about this trip - no value resorts. He hated the value resorts because of the noise level and out of control kids. You can transfer if there is availability, but you will have to pay the difference in the room price.
