Hello,

I have been to orlando many times about 7 times in 10 years and most of the time I do not mind tipping.. but about $5 per meal and sometimes $10 but when i see that they say you should top $500 over a 11-Night Mediterranean Cruise it makes me not want to tip. why should i have to pay a extra $40 a day in tips?

I want to know this. I know its not going to be a popular question but

What if i refuse to tip?

Well you 'can' refuse to tip.

But thoose people will be working for you all the time in the anticipation that you will tip them; Right or wrong its the way cruise lines work.

When you book you know tipping is expected, you read it everywhere, and even if you skip Dinner, people will serve you at breakfast and lunch and they do that as part of the tipping arrangement.

They work very hard all the time and its the majority of their wages.

IMHO If you can afford to cruise, you can afford to tip, and again imho if you do not tip its like walking out of a restaurant and not paying at all.

An 11 night Med cruise 2 Adults and 2 kids would be on standard tips $528.

Of that $176 is for the upkeep of your room, the rest is for the meals. (Service on All meals bar Palo).

as far as i know, tipping on DCL is optional. You don't have to tip anything, at any time, if you don't want to. Disney gives "guidelines", and you can prepay your tips at the suggested rates (this is convenient because you can put it on your VISA card).... but you can tip as much (or as little) as you want. We usually tip our room attendant more, and our dinner servers less... because we eat in our room a lot (make a bigger mess) and usually skip a dinner or two.

If you eat Lunch or Breakfast the food tip covers the service then as well, so missing just a dinner or two, you should still tip. if you decide not to eat in any of the restaurants, and use room service only, best to tell them in advance so your table can be allocated to someone else ,who will tip.

So how much would you tip if you went out to a nice restaurant for dinner?

You are going to be going out to dinner 11 times over the course of your cruise.

Would you go out to dinner and not tip your server? :sad2:

I certainly would not. But, it is up to you.

Am i right in saying that.

You spend your time on the boat and eating, drinking and then at the end you pay what you think its worth. (I dont mind tipping)

Or do you tip at the end of each meal.. I also found out that disney do not pay there staff. We are expected to do it for them.

Is that legal lol.

I am from the UK but that does not mean I do not want to tip. (in the uk i tip about 10%) but most of the time service is crap and refuse to tip! But if you think about it. You have breakfast, lunch and tea. do you tip at each meal?

You tip at the end of the cruise and DCL says the guidelines for that if you have had satisfactory service.

Severs are paid a small amount say approx $50, I am not saying the right or wrongs of that, but if the cruise line paid them higher, then the cruise fare would be higher.

This is the same for the majority of cruise lines and is well published in advance.

So then i could walk of the boat without tipping and no one would be the wiser?

On DCL, you can settle your tips at Guest Services at the end of your cruise (the last night). They will give you a guideline sheet and some envelopes, and the rest is up to you. You don't have to tip your servers/attendants directly.

For room service or poolside drinks, I have also tipped the server directly, using cash.

They must be happy eager workers if they are not paid or even more reason to tip.

I am also from the uk and very happy to tip. What are you thinking about?

As I said, you tip at the end of cruise, Happy Cruising.

You and the servers would know. The servers would have looked after you for 11 nights and also your stateroom host, for 11 nights. For about $50 a week.

But once you are off the boat they wont see me again lol.. but they do get $50 per person that they look after.. now how many does each server look after?

Yes, you could walk off the ship and not tip. But, you are essentially not paying the cruise staff that has been serving you for the past 11 days if you do that. The staff make their living off the tips, not what they are paid as a salary, about $50 a month.

We always skip breakfast and lunch at the restaurants, and only attend one or two dinners. We still tip the dinner servers, just not as much... we like giving the room attendants a little more, because we have always had excellent room attendants.... dinner servers - only 1-out-of-4 cruises have we had "excellent" table service... 2 other times it was "adequate" and once it was downright poor.

To answer your question, nothing can happen to you.

However, using Andrew's math:

$528 in total tips for a family of 4 for 11 nights.
-$176 for stateroom host
= $352 for your head server, server and assistant server
This covers a total of 33 meals (3 meals a day times 11 days).
$352/33 = $10.66 a meal in tips for a family of 4.

Now these people will trip over backwards for you. The other night at dinner my DH didn't want anything on the menu. He asked the server if he could get a plain steak and a baked potato. Our server had someone run up to Topsiders to get his meal for him. The next night my DD asked for a plate of spaghetti with butter. Yep, it was delivered even though it wasn't on the menu.
Our tablemates never seemed to like their food. They requested multiple entrees almost every night. And they requested each one separately. The first one would come out and they inevitably didn't like it. They would order a second one and then a third. This would go on and on every night.
One night, they brought the woman every desert on the menu because she couldn't make up her mind. And she ate everything. She even ate this gluten free desert that she saw some kid eating because she said it looked good. Yep, the chef had an extra so they brought it to her.

It is up to you on whether or not you tip but I, personally, would never stiff them if they were doing a good job. My servers all got extra this trip. Last trip only the stateroom hostess got extra. Just my 2 cents but you can do whatever you wish when it comes to tipping.

Do you go to Topsiders or Beach blanket,? The evening Animators palate team of servers, also cover that for breakfast, and thats included in the tipping process.
If you are not going to use any of the restaurants do tell DCL in advance so your table can be allocated to someone else.

Of course we will use them otherwise how else will be eat. I guess room service

thanks for your comments.

I just wanted to know as theres not much info about it.
