Can you refund the hopper option??

My parents are joining us on our upcoming trip, and my Mom has a bum knee. She has trouble with distances. I thought we'd take it slow, and rest whenever she needs it. I suggested she buy park hopper tickets, because we like to have nap time with our toddler, and then we could return to which ever park. Now, as I figure out a schedule, I realize that she may not even need to use hoppers, I'm sure they'll bail when it comes to returning to the parks after nap time. Can they exchange their unused tickets for non-hoppers? It makes me cringe if I suggested she get the hoppers and then they don't have the energy to use them. Should I even worry about this?
Any ideas would be helpful!

If you can add the option when you get there for the park hopper option, I don't see why you can't take it off. I would call Disney to make sure.

My guess is that they'll let you add on features you can pay extra for, but not take off anything that will cause them to give you a refund. But again, just my uneducated guess. I would just keep them. Say they went to MK one morning and then decided they really wanted to go to dinner somewhere in the World Showcase, etc. the same night, with the park hoppers, they would have that easy flexibility.

This is what I was told:

If the ticket has not been used yet, you can trade it in for any other kind of ticket, say, without hopping. But you would want to add some more days or some other feature in place of hopping because no change, not even Disney Dollars, is returned.
