Do you have to order two at the initial ordering time or when you're done can you ask for another? What if you don't like what you ordered, can you get something different and doesn't that make for a long dinner??

I've done both. I've ordered two initially, as well as after I had the first and was still a tad bit hungry.

You can order the both at the same time, or ask for more, if one doesn't fill you up. One good thing about ordering them at the same time, you can ask to have the main entree doubled up, on the same plate, so you don't also get the extra side servings, if you want.

If you don't like what you have, they are more than happy to bring you something else.

on our last cruise in February there were 2 times that I had asked for substitutions and you would have thought that I asked them to go inland to find me my food. The head waiter acted like I was making his life very difficult. He definitely made it seem like any changes to the original menu were not easy for them to accommodate. Really missed our serving team from our first cruise after this last one.

How does that work if everyone else at the table is finished?? I feel like the last two cruises I took they really didn't give you an option if you wanted additional food? Not that they were rushing us but I didn't feel like it was right to hold back table mates who were finished and ready for dessert.

You can do that.

Weirdly, when I have ordered two salads (because I like a big salad) and an entree (the celeriac gratin dish on Dream), he brought me ONE salad and said that if I still wanted the second I could ask him for it. That made me feel incredibly awkward and weird, so of course I didn't ask for it. It was a bummer. I love a big salad, I love the salad on that menu, and I didn't get what I wanted, which was just another salad.

Meanwhile, people order 3 steaks and all that...and I don't get the extra salad.

You certainly can tell your server, as well as the other diners, that you want them to go ahead with their dessert service. Although, typically, when we've had a large table, everyone pretty much just went with the courses at the same time. Yes, sometimes one person or another would wait while the others had a course that they didn't order, but it wasn't awkward.

We cruised with a group of 13. The first night we had creme brulee. The Aussie of the group asked if we could have it everynight, and if so bring 9 of them. The
waiter said sure..... and every night they brought us 9 of them! Plus we all ordered dessert too!!

I couldn't decide between the steak and lobster mac and cheese... so I just asked for a small bowl of the mac and cheese, no problem. Have also done this in Enchanted with ordering an entree and asking for a side order of scallops(which was also an entree) on the side.

I typically order 3 courses: either 2 apps and 1 entree or 1 app and 2 entrees. Some of the portions are ridiculously small, so this usually is the perfect amount of food for me.

I had a similarly weird experience when I departed from my usual practice to order only 1 salad and 1 entree. The server was extremely reluctant to put in the order, insisting that the nicoise salad was some super-large entree portion. Well, that's great, but I ordered zero apps and only 1 other entree. Other people at the table were ordering 2 apps and 3 entrees, so I'm still unsure why he was on my case about it.

Turns out that it was an average-sized salad with only about 2 oz. of tuna and an absurd number of green beans. smh

On our very first cruise, my DD ordered the steak with white rice and veggies on the first night of the cruise. Then she ordered a second serving and they brought it out for her with more white rice and veggies. On the second night, she ordered the steak again and before she had even finished the first serving, they had another one ready for her. Thankfully, she was still hungry and she ate most of it. But on the third night, we made sure to tell them that if she was hungry, she would order just a steak with no rice and veggies. It worked out really well that way and they seemed to appreciate knowing that she would speak up if she wanted more. And I felt better knowing that food was not being wasted.
In my DS's case, he would order the kids meal and invariably want another of whatever he ordered. It just got to the point where by the second night, they just put two on his plate and he was a happy camper.

In subsequent cruises, they would branch out and try new things and if they did not like it (DD loves lamb chops, but not the spicy ones in Enchanted Garden with the mint) they would order their stand by. :)
We now have the menu down to a science and they just order one of whatever they want and we tell the servers at the beginning that we are not shy about asking for more if we need it.

Sorry for the long post, but we have found all our serving teams to be very accomodating and helpful.

PS DCL Pluto...My husband loves lobster night and once had 5 servings of it. :) He has since backed off of that with just two of them that he asks for at the beginning of dinner. :)

Maybe there are only a limited number of fresh greens on board and they are worried about running out?

You can basically asks for anything in the MDR. My friend once had eaten seven lobsters in one seating, yes seven lobsters. I can eat a big meal but this was even too much for me to even fantom. I just watched in amazement.

Although our waiter on our last cruise on the wonder was very nice, we had a similar experience when we asked to add pepperoni to the kids cheese pizza on the menu. Our waiter acted like this was impossible and then said he would ask the chef but was not optimistic. I told him dont worry thinking I would run upstairs to Pinocchio's and grab a slice of pepperoni pizza and bring it into the mdr in order to avoid a breakdown with my "difficult" (nice way of putting it) child. But then our waiter came back and said chef had been very gracious and would put pepperoni on the pizza. The entire experience made me uncomfortable. I don't think we had ever asked for anything special before on any of our disney cruises, and i've always read how everyone says they will get you anything you want, so it was weird.

Wow...that IS weird. I cannot even imagine that being a hard request at all.
My husband loves the bran muffins and one evening at dinner he mentioned casually (didn't even ask) that he had forgotten to get some bran muffins from the buffet that morning to take to our cabin for a snack. Before the end of dinner, our Assistant server was back with a plate of them with little butter packs ready to go. :)

i've ordered two before - i do it at the same time everyone is ordering mains. I didn't want to seem greedy - so I claimed one was for my baby. :) i managed to eat both myself. If i do it on my next cruise - i'm going to just see if i can get half portions.

I think you may have had our waiter from the Wonder! I had heard they were so accommodating and I asked at dinner for a small bowl of fruit for my son on the side. You would have thought I had asked them to grow it themselves! First they seemed totally confused, then they acted like it would be very difficult, finally they brought him a few apple slices. Not impressed at all but I've since concluded that it was just a bad server (he wasn't terrible, just wasn't willing to put forth any extra effort).

Therein lies the problem. People report experiences with "great" servers who go above and beyond because they want to, not because they have to. Then people get servers who only do what the job requires and don't have the personality/drive to go above and beyond. Because of what people read previously about great servers, they think they had a bad server when the server was doing their job as required by DCL/whatever company. That isn't a bad server. That's an average server. Someone who doesn't even do the minimum would be bad.

It is also possible that it is a newer server who is either adjusting to the job or is not aware they are allowed to go that extra mile.

Just my opinion though.
