Can you reallocate holding account points, without canceling the whole reservation?

Here is my situation…I have 6 points that are in holding. I am currently holding a reservation for a 5-night stay in mid-December. MS told me that when I get within 60 days (but prior to 30 days) of this reservation, I should call them so they can try to reallocate the points, and use the 6 that are in holding. MS said they would have to cancel the entire 5-night stay, and try to rebook it. I asked if they could only cancel 1-night, rather than risk losing all 5-nights.

I know December is a popular DVC time, so I don’t know if it’s worth putting the room back into circulation, when there will probably be a waitlist. Does anyone know if MS can view the waitlist? Or is it just a gamble to cancel the reservation, and hope there’s no waitlist?

it a big chance especially for dec.

you can call in Oct and see - but there will be probably be a wait list ready to gooble up your reservations.

you will be fine, just make sure before MS reallicates your points that it is so important for them not to lose your Dec. ressies. I just did the same thing, i have a ressies for a few days before new years and a day after and i wanted to throw in a last min. trip. I could not borrow points because i still had two weeks to go before i was in my use year and the trip was arriving before my use year, well i asked if they can reallicate my dec. points to borrowed points and use my current points for my last min. trip, yes i was told that they would have to cancel my ressies for dec. but i told MS that i didnt want to lose my dec. ressies and they told me it can be done without me losing my dec. ressies. MS came back on the phone and gave me a new conf. # for my dec. ressies and my new last min. ressies. Thanks MS !

if you were told to call 30 before that is what i would do and make sure they understand you dont want to lose your dec. ressies. good luck :wizard:

If there is a waitlist for the days, MS is not supposed to reallocate with points that would not have been available to you when the original reservation was made. That isn't fair to members on the waitlist.

Best wishe s-

If you could make a reservation with regular points, then reallocate it directly at 60 days to the current reservation, then what would be the point of having holding points in the first place? They would serve no purpose.

It would be similar to saying you can book a home resort at 11-months, and then at 7-months just reallocate those points to a non-home resort.

That's why in both situations it requires both a cancellation and new reservation. Thus if there are any waitlists, they get it first. Now you can ask before you actually cancel if there is still availability, and if so then cancel and make the new reservation. If there is no availability then you know beforehand not to cancel, because if you did, you'd lose the reservation entirely.

All you can do is hope there's still availability at the 60 day point. If there isn't, then you'll have to find another way to use those holding points.

wdwstar: Your situation is different. You were not trying to make a reservation with unrestricted points, and then replace those points at a later date using restricted points. You simply wanted to change the source of the unrestricted points you were using. You could have used your borrowed points for the initial Dec ressie on day 1. They are not restricted.

Holding points, Reservation points, and non-Home resort points have restrictions on them. That's the difference.

While they should not reallocate points to a day that is wait listed, they can for days that are not wait listed. They can do individual days without losing the rest. If you call and don't get someone to help you, simply call back and get someone else.

Thanks, Dean. That's what I was wondering. So in other words, for my 5-night reservation, they can check each of the 5-nights, and if just one of them has availability (no waitlist), we should be able to reallocate the points. I'm assuming I should hope for either the first night or the last night...this way, they can shave that night off the original reservation, and just rebook it as a 1-night stay...leaving the other 4-nights intact.

If the only available night is, say, the 3rd night, I guess this won't work out, because that would essentially split the original reservation into two 2-night stays, and I don't think they can do that.

You would be OK if any of the nights is available- even though it will technically be separate reservations - it will all be seamlessly linked together and all on one check-in and room key.

Good luck!
