Can you drive a "stick"?

Nope, I don't see the sense in driving stick if the car will do the work/thinking for you......

DH can't either, but he could probably get us from Point A to Point B if he had to in a stick car. We always joke that if we ever would go on the Amazing Race, the first thing we would do is learn to drive stick......

Yep, learned to drive on an '66 MGB. My first car was a '70 Bug...great little car. Then got a nifty little Bugeye. Loved my Datsun 240Z. But, sadly...my knees can't take it anymore...so it's automatic for me. But, if I needed to move ds's car, I could!!! Everyone should know how to drive a stick...just in case they are the only ones capable of driving and it's not an automatic!!!

I learned how to drive using a stick shift. My first 2 cars were sticks. I don't care to ever have another one though. I'm too lazy. :teeth:

I can drive a stick. My last car was a 5-speed. I had it for 11 years. When I got the automatic, I stomped the floor for months looking for a clutch. Now, I'd have to get used to the stick again. I think it would come back to me quickly though.

I can, but it's been several years since I have. Is it like riding a bike? :teeth:

Yep, I would be hard pressed to buy a car that wasn't manual.

Our first automatic car was purchased in 1993. DD (22) learned how to drive a manual, since her first car was one of our old ones. Her new car is a manual. DS (12) will also learn how to drive a stick when it's time.

There was an article (first person narration) about an armed car jacking. The victim went to a nearby store and called the police. When they arrived and went to the scene, his car was still there. Apparently, the carjacker didn't know how to drive a stick.

No, not an inch.

Back in 1987 or 1988 DH said he was going to teach me how to drive a stick. I must have been really bad...he gave me one lesson using his car & I never had another!

Exactly my story!!! We were married in 1988, and DH had a VW Rabbit - a stick shift.

He tried to teach me to drive it a couple of times, then gave up!!!

I learned on one, drove on in high school, and my first two cars were sticks. But I haven't driven one in a long time. Do you think it's like riding a bicycle - you just don't forget.

Nope, my husband tried to teach me while we dated and I laughed so hard I about peed my pants LOL I'm just not that coordinated and just get too tickled when it keeps dying or giving myself whiplash trying to take off and keep it running LOL

It's harder than it looks. I remember once when I worked at a nice hotel here in town, the valet had to run and do something and asked me if I could take over for just a few minutes. I said sure before even thinking it through and wouldn't you know the first person to pull in needing valet was a stick (the car not the person) LOL I thought for a moment about moving it slowly in to the parking garage and then since it wasn't a busy night figured I'd just leave it for the 10-15 minutes until the valet got back :).

Yes I can drive a stick. I learned when I was about 20. Actually I like driving a stick shift car, even though I haven't had one in years.

Yup...you have to learn to drive in a "stick" here in the UK.

Similar here in Australia..............if you get your license in an Automatic that is the only type of vehicle you are licensed to drive. So, 99.9% of people get their license in a Manual "stick", so that they are licensed to drive an automatic or manual.

I've only ever had a manual, as has DH and my parents. My Dad was a motor mechanic and when my brother and I got our first cards he recommened we get a manual as back then they were much cheaper to repair, you only needed to replace the part that was broken not a whole heap of other things like would be the case in an automatic.

My eldest DS has a manual car and youngest DS is learning to drive in a manual.

ETA: There are far more manual cars on the road here than there are automatic. Automatic transmission is a growing trend, but manual is still more popular. I've driven an automatic though...........many years ago, it was an experience, but still prefer a manual......at least with a manual you are in charge of the gears.

::yes:: Same here in the UK. It definitely makes more sense to learn in a manual.

So yep, I can and do drive one :thumbsup2
