I am not a member of DVC and a member offered me a weeks stay at one of the resorts, for a price. Is this possible for a non member? And how do I get proof of purchase from the resort? Would there be an reference number or something? Is it transferable to a non member?

What he was offering was to rent you his points. He can't sell you his points. He can rent them to you for a certain amount and let you stay on his points. He would have to make the reservations for you and be a go-between as far as what you want to set up at the resort. MS will not speak with you (the renter) but only the owner. One member can transfer points to another member but a non-member can't buy points from a member. Hope this clears things up for you.

Yes, a member can rent a villa to someone for a period of time. You can get a copy of the reservation, but the member controls the reservation and there are very rare cases where someone gets stiffed.

Is the member your friend? Relative? I've made lots of reservations for friends and family members, but I've always invited these people to come with me.

On the other hand, lots of people rent out points that they can't use, or they rent points out to help pay the maintenance fees. There's a DVC rent/trade board here.

Good luck. It's probably going to be a bargain for you, and you may like it so much, we could be welcoming you home, soon!

You're not buying them, or even renting them. For a price, a DVC member will make a reservation in your name using their points.

Please be sure and educate yourself on how a DVC reservation is very different from a regular hotel reservation, and the basics of “renting points”, as it is often referred to.

How much would I pay for a week of march 23-29 four 4 people at the paradise pier in Disneyland? What is the going rate for that, and ruffly how many points will that be?

A standard room for those dates runs 165 pt. (higher if there is any type of view involved, or concierge). With the going rate of approx. $10/pt it would be $1650...or $275/nt. Have you actually checked Disneyland's website to see how much the room would be through them? Also, keep in mind that people using points don't pay additional costs like room tax, parking, etc.

Stays at non-DVC resorts (and currently there are no DVC resorts in CA) are extremely expensive point-wise. And you are looking at the most expensive booking season.

For a regular room, you are looking at 165 to 193 points, depending upon view, or at $12 per point $1980 to $2316. $12 seems to be about the going rate for points. Some members rent for less, others more, it is fully negotiable.

For concierge, again depending upon view, 278 to 290 points or $3336 to $3480. That is for 6 nights.

Fri & Sat nights are quite pricey.

If you are renting from a friend, they may give you a break abd just want you to pay for the dues cost on the points, which would be less, but will vary depending upon which resort they own.

But as I said, a standard member to non-member rental for a non-DVC property is quite expensive, and may actually be more than renting direct from Disney.

Price through CRO for 2 adults/2 kids would be $2035 (incl. tax).

Unless renting from a friend, personally, I would not spend that kind of money to rent points compared to the full cash price. The lack of any sort of refund/cancellation guarantee wouldn't be worth the risk to save so little $$ overall, at least for me.
