Can I use Canadian Pennies in the press penny machine?

You sure can!!

I sometimes have issues using Canadian quarters in the machines (sometimes they take them, sometimes not), but I've never had issues using Canadian pennies. I think our pennies are almost the same in size and weight.

At one point I only used Canadian pennies, simply because I had so many shiny ones, and all my American ones were dirty.

Awesome I was thinking the same thing :) we have been saving American change for a while now for the penny presses, but we have so many Canadian shinny pennies

I believe you "can" use them, but they don't turn out as well as using US pennies because of the kind of metal used. I believe theirs are copper and ours (especially newer ones) are nickel based. If you search the threads, you'll find posts asking the same question.

US pennies are actually now (since 1982) 97.5 percent zinc and 2.5 percent copper (copper-plated zinc).

Are the U.S. pennies softer? I was thinking of making DD a bracelet as a souvenier. Someone here had posted pictures of a bracelet and necklace she had made with them, so I went to Michaels crafts and priced a punch and copper findings to link them and a clasp. It seemed do-able, but if I can't punch the hole at either end, I will have to scrap the plan, unless I buy a drill. I wasn't wanting to go to a great expense.

I see on another site that a hammer and small nail will work too. Some acturally prefer it to a drill or press.

According to mint.ca modern Canadian pennies (since 2000) can be EITHER 94% steel, 1.5% nickel, 4.5% copper plating OR 98.4% zinc, 1.6% copper plating. I would think the nickel/steel pennies would be harder. I guess if you are really worried, you could try weighing your pennies to determine composition. Zinc pennies weigh 2.25g, steel weigh 2.35g

Isn't google wonderful!

I saw this DIY craft site and this lady was making charm bracelets out of pressed pennies. She had one bracelet that was all silver and she had actually pressed dimes. That makes me think these machines are not too fussy about what they will press.

There's at least one machine at Disney that presses dimes. There is also another that presses quarters. Could it be possible she simply found a machine that required dimes instead of pennies?

I know when I went to Boldt Castle, there was a "pressed coin" machine at a gift store on the Canadian side that did not take pennies, but rather had its own copper disks to press inside the machine.

Once you pressed your "coin" it had an additional thing where you could insert the coin and press a button (for free) and it would drill a hole in it for you.

I didn't know that. Maybe that's what they were. It was such a cute idea. She made pressed penny bracelets too on copper coloured chains.

I used a mixture of American and Canadian pennies. And make a necklace and keychain for the kids from them. I bought a lunch from michaels. Some where hard to punch but doable :).

Just as a general FYI (and btw I have tons of pressed Canadian pennies) all pressed "penny" machines in Canada actually press a small copper disc instead of a penny as defacing (including pressing) canadian money is illegal. It is because you are defacing the queen. I can only assume it's different in the states as the people on their money have all passed away versus here we use our living Monarch... Like I said this has more in common with a Bill Nye "Did you know... Now you know" segment than anything else but just thought I'd point it out
