Can I get a replacement candy apple?

Do you have a candy apple or a caramel apple? I agree that one should be gooier than the other but I bet that the heat got to whatever you had.

Honestly if you were to take it back I think they would replace it for you. That is what Disney does. I however would just throw it away and not waste my time taking it back.

Now I want a candy apple. :scratchin

You might as well ask. They will tell you whether you can or can't have another one. I think you might have a problem seeing as you bought it more than 24 hours ago.

no, Candy apples are the red ones with the harder candy coating. Its made by boiling corn syrup and flavoring then coating the apple and letting it cool and harden. Its kind of like when you get to the end of a hard candy and you finally chew it up lol.

Caramel apples are (obviously) caramel coated and usually stickier.

Thanks, I actually thought they are same. When in the store I just point the one I like but I never knew they use different processes for them.

I bought a candy apple at Goofy's Candy Shop in DTD last night. I had visions of it all day today and planned to have it for dessert tonight. I bit into it, and the candy is all gooey and not at all hard like it should be. I couldn't eat it! We aren't planning on going back to DTD, but if I take my receipt to another store that sells them(like the shop at the front of MK), will they give me a replacement candy apple? I really hate to waste $5.50. It's bad enough the Mickey sugar cookie I bought there was just NASTY.

:faint: Really? You honestly think that someone should replace it?

Let it go and enjoy your vacation.

Candy apples are not supposed to be gooey like this.

Its interesting how things can be different, you say crisp, majority say gooey :) I am originally from the UK and candy apples are crisp, crack like glass as you bite in, sound much like what you're used to.

When I moved here (the South) I found them 'gooey' and was surprised by this. Maybe its a regional thing :)

It is such a pain too!!! lol
If you dont get the sugar mixture hot enough when you make it it will all just melt right off! We found that out the hard way when we made some one year. The kids were all proud of them on the cookie sheet...until about an hour later and there was a big pool of really thick, gooey candy around them

Agreed... I've never personally tried it but I would bet if you tried to return it they would probably replace it for you. Or maybe even bring in the receipt and explain it to the manager (without bringing in the offending apple) and see what happens. My guess is for $5 they would give you another apple. I don't think I would waste my time tho. But if it's bothering you then you certainly have the right to ask. The worst they can say is No. And I appreciate that you are clear that this isn't a matter of taste but rather it doesn't seem it was properly made. Others have said candy apples can get gooey if not eaten overnight. Have you ever saved one overnight before? Just curious on that one. Good luck! Wish I was there!! :)

I've found this, too, much to my disappointment. When I was a kid, I loved the hard candy apples I got when we lived in England. Unfortunately, every candy apple I've tried in the last several years has been gooey and sticky. If I wanted one like that, I'd just get a caramel apple.

Not OP, but I used to make both candy and caramel apples for the neighborhood kids around here every Halloween for trick or treating (just gave them to the kids I knew and whose parents knew me--had store bought candy for the stranger kids:rotfl:). If any candy apples were left over at the end of the night, I always tried to refrigerate them, even though I knew they wouldn't be any good in the morning. The corn syrup mixture has to be cooked past the hard crack stage, but no matter how long you cook that coating, if you refrigerate it, it's going to get gooey, even though it's shiny and hard as glass when you put them in there. Refrigeration and the mositure from the apples won't let the coating stay hard long.

Caramel apples on the other hand are supposed to be good and gooey.

Southern girl. Candy apples are hard and glassy, but I've never had one stay overnight well. They always melt if I try to save it. Never heard of a red candy apple that's supposed to be gooey. Definitely not the same as a caramel apple.

It was probably hard last night. That is exactly what happens to them when you don't eat them right away. There is nothing wrong with it, they always do that if you let them sit overnight. It is a combination of the moisture in the air and the moisture coming out of the apple.

I love, love candy apples and always get them, and usually can't eat them all and try to keep them till the next day and in 50 years it has never worked that they are still hard. usually soggy and chewy if not liquidy around the edges.

Exactly! Sorry OP but the apple is not defective, they just don't keep. Go buy another one and eat it right away. I can assure you most people don't give two figs if you are walking around eating one.:)

Caramel apples are supposed to be gooey. Candy apples should be more crunchy than gooey.

Thank you! This is what I am talking about--a red candy apple.

Isn't it the same thing?

Sorry about that, It is very hard to find candy apples anymore they all want to sell caramel ones.

So, I am from NC--hot and humid. I buy 2-3 candy apples once in a while at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. I bring them home and store them at room temp and I have never had them get soft and gooey by the next day. Now, if you put them in the fridge, it does something to the coating and it almost melts. As far as them being in DQ, it was 70 or so in there and it was only in the low 80's outside.

Anyway, I didn't plan to bring the defective apple with me:rotfl: I just planned on bringing the receipt and asking at the main street shop to see if they are usually gooey like that at WDW. I believe it's the first time I've ever bought one there and I will not be buying more if that's the norm. I seriously would have pulled a crown off if I had eaten it. And those things are messy too, so I would not walk around eating one.

If you are at DTD and have time and it is bothering you then stop in. I'm sure they will replace it. Disney is very good at that. The don't want you going around bad mouthing them over a candy apple.

You are the customer and should be happy with the quality of the merchandise you bought. When they give you a new one , ask to see it first and touch it with your finger so you know if it is hard or not before you walk out. Then if it does the same thing you will know it is just their formula.

Now if you ate 3/4 of it and then complained I'd say you were just scheming for a new free one. But if you are this dis satisfied and will be there without a special trip then go back.

Southern girl here too and I've always eaten candy apples that were hard. Never had one that was "gooey." Sounds good though.

The Candy apples that you buy in the supermarket are called Jelly Apples and they are not the hard, but gooey. So I am not sure if the apple you bought was supposed to be a Candy Apple (hard) or a Jelly Apple (Soft).

Either way I agree with you a Candy Apple which is hard is excellent and one of my favorite treats. The Jelly Apples stink.

I have now seen and read it all here on the DIS
(and to think this is a 3 pg thread)

OP. yes, take the apple back. They will give you a new one. They won't even question it
