This may sound silly, but I have 2 steaks I'd like to make for dinner and was wondering if I could fry them and if so, how. I always grill or broil them, so I have no idea.:o

Hmmm. . .my mothers recipe for frying steaks consisted of turning the burner on high and flash frying the meat in a cast iron skillet for several minutes on each side. Turned out burnt, tough, and chewey every time. She was very consistent.

I grill or broil mine. Any reason you want to fry it instead?

I was just wondering if it could be done. I'll probably broil them. It's raining so I can't grill them.

Yes you can Fry them. I wouldn't recommend it but you can.

OMG...my mom used to fry our steaks...with a tiny bit of oil, and onions...I really loved it. Never dry and I love sauteed onions...Brings back yummy memories.

Yes, you can. I haven't done it in a while, but I believe I just threw them in a frying pan. I don't know about any good seasoning ideas.

i have done it before, like glo said -- with a little oil and some onions and spices -- yummy!

I love Steak au Poivre and here's the recipe I use a bit of butter and a bit of olive oil in the pan. The butter gives it a nice flavor and the oil keeps it from burning.

I heat the oil/butter in the pan until it's sizzleing, but not smoking. Then I put the steaks in and shake the pan back and forth so the steaks don't stick. For a med-rare steak I sear the steak on each side 3 minutes while shaking the pan on a high heat, then turn the heat down to medium and cook each side 3 minutes more. A total of 12 minutes for a perfect steak :).

Watch out when you flame the cognac! My friend once singed his eyebrows making this recipe :).

Steak Au Poivre
Recipe by the late James Beard

2 (12 oz.) Boneless Strip Sirloin, thawed
1.5 T. coarsely ground pepper
1 t. salt
Oil
1/3 cup Armagnac, Cognac, or bourbon, warmed

Although it can be grilled with success, traditionally steak au poivre is panbroiled or sauteed. The pepper for steak au poivre must be crushed in a mortar, cracked with a rolling pin, or whirled in a blender to make rather coarse pieces. Do not be afraid to use a generous amount. Freshly crushed pepper is not hot.

About 30 minutes before cooking press the crushed peppercorns into both sides of the steak, using the heel of your hand. Gauge about 1 tsp. per steak.

Heat a heavy skillet with a very small amount of oil. Sear the steak on both sides very quickly over high heat. Reduce the heat and cook to the state you prefer. When the steak is done, quickly flame it with the warm liquor. Remove the steak to a hot platter, rinse the pan with a touch of the same liquor and pour over the steak. Serves 2.

I saw it done on the food channel with half olive oil and half butter. Just a little of each.

Let us know how it turns out....

Here's another one DH and I have used many times:

Pre-heat oven to 350.

Add just enough olive oil to lightly cover bottom of oven-proof frying pan.

Season steak with very finely chopped garlic (I use the chopped garlic from the jar), and black pepper. (Sometimes I add a little seasoned salt)

Put frying pan on very high heat on top of stove. Add steak (careful!), and keeping the heat on high, cook for 2 minutes. Turn steak, and again keeping on high, cook for 2 more minutes (I use a screen splash guard on top of the pan)

Remove the steak from the stove and immediately put into oven. (remove splash guard also)

Cook: 6 to 7 minutes for rare; 8 to 9 minutes for medium rare to medium, and about 10 to 11 minutes well done (I make a little slit with a knife to see how it is coming along)

Done! Oh, and the juices in the pan, dunk that bread it them! Yum.

I've cooked steaks in cast iron and no oil. My steaks always turned out yummy.

Heat the cast iron skillet until a drop of water in the bottom skips around then throw the steak in and cook it however long you want on one side then the other. It's rather like a grilled steak.

I never cook steak. I don't know how, so I would fry it if I were to cook one. :p

Good luck! :p
