Can Anyone Tell Me Anything Good About MYSPACE.COM??

Your sister made her first mistake by sending her DDs link to the whole family, especially 80 yo grandparents, LOL. She is 17, there are definitely going to be some 'swears' going on between her and her friends.

She is 17 years old. I assume a high school senior? If she is not savvy enough to learn to protect herself online, something went wrong somewhere.

The fact that she shared her myspace page with her parents is a good thing, it is highly doubtful she is using it for horrible things.

You family needs to learn that she is on the cusp of adulthood and they need to have some faith that she probably knows alot more about internet safety/dangers than they do.

For a young woman of 17, the only thing you really can do is remind her to be safe.

If she were alot younger, myspace may not be an appropriate venue...but at 17, I think they are totally overreacting.

I think it is nice that you are so willing to learn more about it before jumping to conclusions.

I called one of my friends up a few weeks ago and the conversation went something like this:

Me: "Hi there, how's it going?"
Her: "What are you up to?"
Me: "Oh, just looking at X's MySpace page."
Her: "Oh really??? And how exactly did you come across it?"
Me: "I have my ways."

:lmao: Her DD just turned 14 and her site wasn't as bad as some, but it was still bad enough! Some of the pictures bordered on sexual, and she had one where she was bent over looking between her legs at the camera. That picture wasn't meant in a sexual way, but it's sure not something you want everyone seeing!

My DS doesn't maintain a page, although a girl recently made one for him. I do read all of his chat logs, and I really wish some of his friends' parents would do the same.

The middle-schooler's sites are "the worst". My DD started MySpace in 8th grade and I really had to "reel her in." She is now in high school and I see a lot of improvement on her page. Much less info being given out. I looked at her site the other day. She had a picture of herself sitting next to our toilet. Her words were that she ate hairspray for breakfast and vomits glitter. Certainly not sexual, but pretty strange. I am seeing that her and her "group" are trying to see who can have the most outrageous/weird picture posted.

My 2 cents. I am 42 and have an account. My boys 14 and 15 have accounts. My so and his daugher 15 have accounts. I watch my kids space daily. I have no issue going in and deleting something I find offensive. My so daughter has a wild space, and I have questioned her about it too. ( I also check her page daily and if there is something I don't like I let her dad know.) On the other side, my 1/2 sister who I have not talked to in say 10 years found my page and now we are talking like we never have before. Had it not been for myspace, I would not be getting back in touch with my family. FWIW I just keep an eye on things, but kids will find whatever they wish on the computers today. They know how to find and get whatever it is good or bad. JMHO.

My DD just got another MYSPACE page. She had deleted her last one because people who she thought were "sketchy' were leaving messages somehow!! I 'monitor' her MYSPACE account and will approach her on anything I feel is unacceptable!!! Some of her friends pages are appalling!!! adn I let her know how I feel about it!!

Your family sounds like a handful! Why would she send out her DD's link to everyone? And then wonders why you're all up in her business. :rotfl: I'm sorry to laugh, but it just cracks me up because she brought the drama on herself by doing that.

EXACTLY! To be honest, I had never heard of MYSPACE until sis all sent the entire family niece's link. When dad told me about it and that we all got the link, I thought it was some web page that my sister PAID someone to design for niece (????)!! Like my DH, he has a professional site designed by a webdesigner for his business. WRONG!!!
And yes, to send it to my parents who spend 24/7 sitting in a pew at church...WHAT EXACTLY WAS SHE THINKING...and now this whole thing with bro....
I do think that niece is trying to be "above board" on this site BUT what was upsetting to M&D was all HER friends leaving her messages and using profanity....did not go over BIG with the 80 y.o. M&D!

I agree that My Space is getting a bad rap. I dont personally have a page but my brothers do.

My little brother (the Marine) was able to reconnect with an old friend who he has not seen a couple of years and now they are dating and talking about marriage.

My other brother also has a site and has found a couple cousins on our dad's side that we have lost touch with over the years.

It's not all bad. I met my dbf on there. We kind of new each other in high school and got reacquainted on myspace. :goodvibes

A friend of mine met her fiance on there.

However, we're obviously we're not teenagers. I'm 27 and my friend is 25. I have seen some pretty crazy sites on there though.
