My 13 yr old DD has problems in her t-zone mostly. This summer it has gotten worse, I think mainly from the heat and sweating so much, I think it makes her break out more. She mostly has acne on her forehead.

Are there any products that work really well? She's tried a couple different ones and nothing seems to be helping. I feel sorry for her! Anyone have any advice or product they recommend? Thanks so much!!! :)

I finally broke down and went to the dermatologist. We tried everything too.

Come to find out my dd has "scaling" which means she has eczema on top of the acne. Now she is on doxycyline and some medicated creams and shampoo.

So I say stop wasting your money chasing down OTC products and get the good stuff.;)

I took ds 14 to the derm yesterday after trying everything. The derm gave him some medicated soap and cream. She also told him to shower in the morning and at night every day.

The best thing that's working for my DS15 is a topical antibiotic that we got from the regular dr. He uses it every 8 weeks. In between times, he's using a high strength benzoyl peroxide that I got at a facial treatment spa. He also uses an acne face wash.

We were on our way to the dermatologist and started with our normal dr. He said with teens they can get a bacterial infection on the skin which causes the outbreaks. And yes it can keep coming back. It seems with him using it every 8 weeks, I'm keeping them mostly away. I can tell when the 8 weeks is here because he'll start to get bad again.

My DD17 hasn't found a thing that works for her yet. Even the things provided by the dermatologist office did no good. She thinks that her skin looks best when she's been exercising, so her new plan is to make sure she gets more exercise.

DS 15 has had breakouts since February. At his Ped checkup last week I asked about his acne. Dr. said with his moderate case that he'd rather not just guess at meds and referred us to a dermatologist. DS goes on Tuesday.

Both of my teens have used Proactive with excellent results. Change her pillowcase frequently and make sure she is washing her face morning, night and after exercise.

Good luck OP!

DD13 uses the Origins product line. She cleanses with Checks and Balances and then uses their Zero Oil toner. Any breakouts are addressed with their Spot Remover, which is wonderful! It comes in either pads for a broader area or liquid form for individual spots. Everything clears up within a day or two at the most.

Neutrogena salicylic acid 2% face wash- it's orange, comes in a small pump, and you get it anywhere. BEST stuff ever. Also they make a 2% sa spot treatment that is magic.
I have tried EVERYTHING -my doc finally said to try this, and it's been years, and better than I ever dreamed! I'm middle aged(sigh) I have 2 teens,it works for us all.

Thanks everyone for all your responses! I'll have to check into some of these products mentioned and maybe think of getting her in to see a dermatologist, it's just starting getting worse the last week or two.

I also recommend going to a derm.

DD tried just about every OTC acne product on the market. In hind-sight - this was REALLY EXPENSIVE.

DD occasionally breaks out - but it is so much better!

If it's just a few pimples, benzoyl peroxide ("on the spot") will do the trick.

However, if it's really acne, I suggest visiting the dermatologist. I never went to the derm as a teen, but my younger sister begged my mom. One of the first things the dermatologist told her was to stop using her Clinique products and to wash her face with Dove soap. She also prescribed her to a pill to prevent breakouts, as well as a stronger on-the-spot treatment (which I hijack when I have a bad pimple).

I agree! I did the same thing with 3 of my 4 teens. It was the best money I ever spent! :thumbsup2

Agree with PP: dermatologist is the way to go. I struggled with acne all through my teens and still have issues...I feel like I have tried everything! The stuff that worked best for me as a teenager was Neutrogena face wash (orange kind in the summer, gentler version in the winter), and prescriptions: Differin gel/cream, minocycline (a pill) and THE pill (bc). I did one round of Accutane, which definitely helped, but my skin dried out so much it was painful. I still get the occasional breakout, but nothing Iike I used to. My skin is FINALLY changing! Now Cetaphil products work best for me, and I drink a ton of water, which I think helps too.

Good luck to your DD...I know just how frustrating this can be.

If you want to try something OTC I used to use St Ives Apricot Scrub for blemishes. I'd scrub every day in the shower, let it sit on my face while I shave my legs or brush my teeth, so the salicylic acid soaks in, then I'd rinse it off. Never had a problem with pimples, or acne throughout high school, and I credit this stuff.

Now I use Burt's Bees pore refining scrub in the shower. It's not as good as the St Ives stuff, but its all natural and not tested on animals. If I don't shower I wipe my face down with Yes to Tomatoes Facial Blemish Wipes, and if I am taking off makeup I use Lush 9 to 5.

All 3 of my teens and myself use a styptic pencil every night before bed. You can usually find them in the shaving aisle. At Walmart they are .92 cents. You wet them and then rub them where you are getting acne just before bed. I spent tons of $$$ before that and then a friend told me about this and now I pay $4.00 a month for styptic pencils.

Epiduo worked for my scaly, flaky red bumps.

Lots of great advice here. If you want to try something OTC Cetaphil wash always worked for me but I didnt have a lot of acne, so it may not work for everyone.
