Hello,

Can anyone help me with the DS decision? I am so confused, I think there are 4 different kinds. My 6 year old daugher really wants it just for this dog game where you get a dog to go with the game.

Do you know the difference between the different versions of DS?

Did I miss all the deals for it? Any cyber monday deals?

Thanks so much! :)

I always seem to come out of the wordwork for video game questions. :goodvibes Anyway.

I'm not shopping right now so I can't tell you deals. But as far as the different types:

DS Lite: This is the oldest version out there and will likely be the cheapest. It's called the Lite in that it's lighter and smaller than the very first DS they came out with about 5 or 6 years ago. It plays all normal DS games, and it has a slot in the bottom to play older Gameboy Advance games. Given your daughter isn't an older gamer and won't have a larger game library to worry about being able to play, that second slot probably isn't a big deal. It can play online with some games that support it when you configure it to your home router.

DSi:
This is newer than the DS Lite. It no longer has the secondary Gameboy Advance slot, but it still plays all normal DS games. The two major new features here are a camera to play with (I believe there are little games to mess with your pictures, that kind of thing) and the ability to buy games over the internet from the DSi store. There are a lot of smaller developers that put out their own little games, that's the kind of stuff you'd find in the store. But most kids just like the camera.

DSi XL: This is the exact same thing as the DSi, except it's about 50% bigger. Your mileage may vary if you think it's good or not. I think it was made for the older gamers so they could see, and to me it's far too clunky to be all that portable and I think the graphics of the games look stretched out and bad. Some people with younger children report the larger size is easier to manage, some say their kids think it's too big. If you're interested in this one I would recommend going to a game store and having a look at it in person. It's really quite big.

3DS: This is the newest DS. As the name suggests, it plays 3D games without the use of glasses. It's really quite cool, though it's not in my budget to upgrade from my old DS so I don't have one yet. It has the same camera functions as the DSi except it has two cameras so it can take 3D pictures. It also has the online store. As far as the 3D goes, there have been a variety of opinions back and forth on whether or not its good for childrens' eyes, or if it causes headaches, etc. You should know it has a switch on the side that controls how strong the 3D is, and the 3D can be turned off entirely making it like the normal DS with the 3D option if you want it. The 3DS can play both normal DS games and the new 3D DS games.

As far as price point goes, the DS Lite will be cheapest but you'll likely need to get a used one. I don't think they make them new anymore. The DSi will be next up, and I've found that the DSi XL and the 3DS are about the same price.

The other question about the dog game. You are thinking of Nintendogs, or Nintendogs + Cats in 3D. Both let you take care of a virtual dog (or cat) who you can pet with the stylus, teach to do tricks by voice command, etc. Both are lots of fun, but make sure you get the one that goes with your DS. Don't get the 3DS one if you are buying a normal DS and if you're getting a 3DS, get the 3D one because the effects are quite good.

Hope that helped some! Let me know if you have other questions.

Hi,

Thanks so much!!
I went to a used store before I saw your post (wish I would have seen it first) :) I bought an original DS for $49. It may be one before a lite? He said the lite was $20 more and the one I bought was before it. He said it should work with any DS game now. I explained I needed it for my 6 year old daughter who really just wanted it for the dog. Its called a Woppy dog. He said it will work with all DS and if she really likes the DS I could always upgrade later.

Do you think the original DS is OK, and do you think $50 is a good price? Should I go and exchange it for a lite for $70 instead?

Thanks so much!! Your post really helped. I wish I saw it before, I could have printed it out and taken it with me! :)

I think you probably did fine. She's just six and wants it for one cute game. If in two or three years she is showing further interest in playing a lot of video games you could always consider getting her a 3DS or a game console or something else once she'd older and more able to take care of something expensive like that.

I don't think you'll fine much for less than $50 so I'd go with it. I just have two suggestions.

1) Charge it and play around with it yourself a bit just to make sure the battery holds a charge. The only reason I upgraded from my original DS to my DS Lite was because I had literally played it so much the battery had worn out and wouldn't stay for more than about an hour. Since it's going to be an older system, just make sure the charge lasts for a reasonable amount of time before you go to the trouble of wrapping it all up.

2) Since she's only six, look into getting a protective case for it. A lot of the parents on here recommend the Nerf cases. It's just one of those things, it's a very sturdy device but sometimes one drop on the wrong kind of floor is all it takes. Also you might want to pick up a pack of spare styli if she is prone to losing tiny things. Will save you a bit of headache if/when the first one goes missing. Make sure to check the packaging and get the smaller kind that fit into the original DS's slot. The other DS versions use bigger styli.

My son has had 2 DS Lites....The first DS Lite had the bad hinge that was a problem when they first came out and eventually the top screen stopped working altogether, so I bought him another DS Lite. This one is starting to have trouble with the buttons (just worn out from years of use by two kids), so I ordered another one from ebay for $89 brand new, but it is coming from Hong Kong because as Fyrefly said, they don't make them anymore so around the states, you can only get them used. I wanted the DS Lite because my youngest likes to still play a lot of the old Gameboy Advance games and none of the other systems take those.

The DS XL is only used once in a while. I thought originally it would be good for my youngest (he was 4 when we bought it for him) because it was bigger, but he preferred his brother's Lite.:confused3

I had a few people mention to me the safety of kids using the 3D systems. I honestly don't know a lot about it, if it is related to seizure disorders or what. But it doesn't seem like a great idea to be looking at 3D images for extended periods of time.

I looked at the 3ds the other day because I was torn between the DSi and the 3DS. After just a few minutes of the 3D my eyes hurt, I am going with the DSi.

My husband has a 3DS and I have the same issue. You can turn the 3D off. That is what I do. I'm sure some games you actually NEED it but the games I have played you don't (like Super Mario 3Dland)

I know that you can turn if off, but the game is for my 6 year old and I know that he would never turn if off because its cool. I would rather him not have the option.

Is the DS lite still a good system? I picked the name of a 14 yr old boy off the Angel tree at church and he asked for a "handheld game" and decided on the DS lite since it was on sale at Target. I bought one game. Is this not a "cool" gift anymore?

I just bought my 5 year old DS the DS lite in blue, used. Stores still are selling the Red and the Pink but not the blue. I'm very happy with what I bought. It's in fantastic condition. No scratches, a little dusty but it looks brand new. I'm excited, he's always trying to steal his sisters.

I'm not ready for either kid to have the internet browser on their DS yet. We'll see how he likes this one and in a few years we might upgrade him.
