Can a commando relax?

I am an admitted park commando. MAJOR park hopping, detail planning, ADR tinkering, rope drop nut job. So my question is...

For other commandos...were you able to relax at Vero Beach? I sit here and think I could enjoy some peace and quiet and relax at a lovely beach resort. But can I??? My husband...FOR SURE. I can picture him snoozing on the beach/by the pool. The three older kids... definitely. But I'd have to chase a 2 year old around! No relaxing for me anyway I guess! Plus...it would be in August. Is the resort enjoyable in such heat?

For a couple of days - yes, you'll probably be able to relax and enjoy it. Beyond that though, you're probably going to be itching to do something.

Usually after a few years the symptoms subside and you can start enjoying a whole different side of Disney!

I suffer from the same illness!! After 12 years of visiting Disney once or twice a year, I for the very first time on this past trip (March 2011) took some time to lounge around the pool. This was under protest of course, but my family was begging for it. WOW, WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!!! It made me realize I need to slow down, let my mind and body relax, and just vegetate for a while. Now, I can't wait to go back and spend even more time around the pool and the resort to just chill.

Now, my experience is minus the two year old since my kids are 13 and 20. It also doesn't help you answer the questions you have specifically about Vero Beach. I do however, strongly recommend RELAX AND ENJOY!!

The pirate play area is fun for your small child, but I don't know how much relaxing you can do with your 2 year old. Still, I think VB is doable. Just like the on site resorts, you'll see a lot of bunnies at VB, and the little ones love to follow them around. I know my DGC could play for hours in the sand. You will do less walking at VB, so in that respect it will be better!

But would you trade 2 nights/3 days in WDW for VB? That's the biggest question. The thought of 8 days in WDW sounds AWESOME! I just don't know if I could skip some and do VB instead for a portion of the the trip. At this point we've been to WDW at least once/twice a year for the past 5 years. I should be able to be a relaxed DVCer by now! After next August's trip we'd be back in WDW for spring break 2013 anyway so it's not like some people who only visit every 5 years or so. Somebody smack me and knock some sense into me please!

So VB lovers.....would you go to VB in August? Or is it just too hot to enjoy the beach? Other choice would be either March 2013 or November 2014. We'd have to book at 7 months...hard to get in spring right?

I would pick August over March, because March could have iffy swimming temps.

If you never considered taking a day at WDW to just consider a pool/relaxing day, then I think you're missing something, and if you have to go to VB to do that, then by all means, do it. I've been to VB for 2 August vacations, 3 nights each. Unfortunately, one of them was when Katrina was pounding Miami. VB is north of Miami, by a lot, we did have some periods of intense rain, but we had a DCuz (11 maybe at the time) and her mom with us and we did have a great time. DCuz took one of the turtle walks, because you are in the time that turtles hatch. We had 4 nights at WDW and 3 nights at VB.

PS. If you're not ready to go to VB, don't worry! You're still young, and have plenty of time to get there! DH and I enjoy it also as empty nesters, not just with our DGC!

We spent one night at VB a few years ago to check out the resort. My DH is a commando, and he spent at least an hour on a conference call for work while the kids and I enjoyed the beach, snorkeling and the pool. DH doesn't think he needs to go back. He's not a beach-type guy and doesn't really relax on vacation.

I have the same concerns, we are not rope droppers but we ( mainly me and my family follows) are commandos also. We usually do about 11 nights a year at the world. This year we decided to break it up as my daughter will be almost 6 next trip (end Sept early Oct) and she really enjoys the beach. So we are doing 8 nights at wdw and 3 at Vero. Our first stay there. I'm not a beach person either after an hour I am usually bored. But I know it will still have the Disney Magic, and my wife and daughter will enjoy it so I will get pleasure from that. Plus I think its a great way to wrap up the trip after 8 days at WDW.

I guess I'm not quite ready to slow down and visit the beach. Maybe in a few more years when Leah is older and I'd actually get to maybe sleep in late and relax on the beach. If we went next summer I know I'd spend all my time running around after her.

cemeb4dk - I think it's a great idea since your daughter is 6. I'm thinking we'll try VB in 2015 when our baby is nearly 6. I have too many WDW plans between now and then to try VB any sooner!

There isn't much to do at Vero Beach, just the beach and pool. You would probably get restless after a day. We only went once and neither DH nor DS has requested a return visit, and I'm the commando in the family.

I'm sure you are right. I think I'd get totally restless. The beach doesn't look very nice either down there. We are only a short drive away from some nice Jersey beaches and one afternoon is enough for me. We don't stay at the shore for a week like a lot of our friends and family. So I don't understand them...and they don't understand me...they can't believe we go to WDW every year!

We're also commando types and enjoy 10 night vacations as our ideal length of time in most cases. So a couple of years ago we did a week at BCV followed by 3 nights at Vero. We were on the go all day every day at the World & the break at Vero was really nice. But I'd say 3 nights is good. Vero is a very sleepy little town & everything closes by 9:00 pm. We're late diners and had a hard time finding places to eat!! There really isn't a whole lot to do besides go to the pool or beach. It's a great way to unwind after the world for a couple days but I'd be bored there for much longer than 3...

At least not cold turkey.

Better you ease into over the years.
Take a break here, spend a few minutes relaxing there.
Soon, you may be able to get in a few hours.

But all at once, for a whole vacation.
