I'm planning to get a new camera prior to my trip in May. I want a high zoom camera, but not an SLR (the kind with the interchangable lenses). I'm looking at a Nikon P80 and a Nikon P90. Does anyone have either of these or another similar camera they can recommend or tell me negatives? I don't want to spend any more than $400 and zoom and shutter speed are the biggest priorities for me. Thanks!

This question is really better suited for the Photography Board, so I've moved it. :)

First of all, I'm no camera expert so these are my non-expert opinions! I'm still 50/50 on if I'll keep this camera. My goal was to have a good superzoom point and shoot.

Pros: Excellent natural light pictures - detail is outstanding, uses SD card which we are already used to/have many of, good battery life, cheap replacement battery cost ($10-$15), has time/date stamp for photos which many superzooms lack, nice feel to the camera - feels well built, nice tilt screen for taking unusual shots.

Cons: Horrible LCD screen quality - at first I thought the picture quality was lacking but when you transfer the pictures to another screen they are fine, it has a flimsy A/V cover which I can see falling off at some point.

More pros than cons at this point and I do realize I'm not going to find EVERYTHING I want in a $400 camera.

Hope this helps.

I have the P80 and the more I play with it, the more I like it. Last yr when we got off the plane we realized the camera we had wasn't working correctly. Of coarse back then I was when I thought you need to have a flash on in every shot (I've come a long way in the last few months.) Only recently have I started taking shots outside of the "auto realm" and I wish I did it years ago.
The night shots on it are pretty good, and I was really impressed with taking 30 pics in about 2 sec. Just the other day I held the camera out the passenger side window doing 65 mph and took a 30 pic burst and they were really clear, even the cars going the opposite direction looked like they were sitting still, you could even see the faces of the drivers.

Recently I've found out I can shoot in Black and White mode and there's an option to do 2 pictures at a time of the same shot. One in color and one B&W.

I really need to read the manual soon!

Here's a comparison of the 80 and 90
