Lightroom is very easy to use, but it is not a replacement for photoshop or elements or any of the other editor options. Lightroom enables you to quickly process your pictures for things like color saturation, white balence etc. It also allows you to tag and store your photos for easy searching.

It would not let you remove a person from a photo, or do specific touch up work etc.

Would the student\teacher verision have anything left out of it? My DH said that sometimes when you get work or office for students they are a skimmed down verision. I ordered it last night before asking this important question.

No, they have the exact same features and functionality. And sometimes even give you more for the money. For example I wanted to move to CS5, they were actually allowing upgrades of the student addition this time, so I thought about that, but I got the extended version for the same price as the regular buying it as a student edition.

As for Microsoft, they give you the full programs that you would get in a non student addition, for example, word is word in all editions, but what you don't get is some of the programs, for example instead of outlook they pagaged a lessor email client.

Adobe has all the requirements and restrictions spelled out on thier site, in the store. Usually student editions are the same as the full version, if not it's specified what comes in it.

Some companies (like Autodesk) will also give you a student price for a limited license, like a year. So at the end of that year you have to buy it again.

So if I am now getting the hang of postprocessing, whether I'm good at it is another question LOl. Would I be better off getting CS5? Is the noise removal as good or better in it?

From what I have read, it is the same noise removal engine in both LR3 and CS5. I know the one in LR3 rocks!

What are you using to post process? When I went to lightroom from the canon software I cut my processing time in half or more.

LR3, I was using Pentax Digital Camera Utility 4 until I got the hang of LR3.2

If your already using the beta then you know the value of the program, it's certainly worth 89 bucks.

I don't know, I'm sure there is someplace that will explain the upgrades.

I'm still on Lightroom 1 so I will be making the plung. I just went from CS2 to CS5 as well.

How old are your kids? As per below, any kid in first grade or above would qualify.

There are several things that qualify as proper proof, a student Id card is one, but a copy of their report card also works as well.

I bought the original LR as a photography student at a local college. It is not skimmed down at all...the one difference in buying as -or for- a student is that you have to agree not to use the product for profit (ie. professional photographers cannot use it to process their work which they are going to sell to a client.) Of course, they only have "your word" on this per signed agreement at purchase.

When I originally purchased Lightroom, my son was in 2nd grade. All I needed was a copy of his report card and a copy of my drivers license to qualify for the student discount.
